How to Litter Train a Rabbit
Hey there! Thanks for clicking on this rabbit care video. I hope I am able to provide you with some instructions and tips that you may not know about how to litter box train a rabbit. This is a basic part of rabbit care that is important to know if you are trying to keep your rabbit pen or area as clean as possible.
Luckily, litter training a rabbit is pretty simple! Bunnies are very intelligent, so training a rabbit can be done in about a week or two. Many rabbit care guides have given advice on how to do this properly. I hope I am able to add to this knowledge and help you as a pet owner to develop the best relationship possible with your rabbit!
Info on my rabbits:
Haku - rabbit breed: 1 year old Holland lop rabbit who loves to nap and dig
Bizu - 3 years old, not sure what breed, but very cute and wise (and if anyone has a guess on rabbit breed let me know)
Both bunnies love snacks and cuddles

I've been looking for a good video about litter training for sharing on a rabbit advice forum and i like this one best so far. Its short and covers everything. Only thing that is different here to what I do is I have two litter boxes for my rabbits because they tend to like to just sit and lay in one and then choose the other to poo and pee in.

I get some difficulties to find something like this in french. i actually have a little male bunny of 2 mounth saved from animalery. i did all this things but i got the impression it doesn't work at all ... is that possible it's because he is not castrated for the moment? Thank you!! It is possible that he’s having a difficult time learning to use the liter box because he is not neutered. It could also be caused by a number of different reasons, but that should help if you plan on doing that in the future.

Glad it was helpful! In my experience rabbits rarely will pee outside the litter box even when they arent fully litter trained (but it can happen). The part I dont understand is that I put litter, I put the hay in the litter box, they poop on the hay...I have one who is semi trained and she likes to sit on the hay and leaves her nuggets of love on it...there is a LOT of hay being wasted, the remaining hay ends up being litter...what am I doing wrong. thanks

@Finkeldinken
@Finkeldinken 2 года назад
I have multiple bunnies and I just have more than one litter box, it works really well. Depending on your individual bunners it can be necessary or not. Some bunners don't mind sharing the same litter box while some do, so if one or more of your bunners are not good with the litter training it may solve everything if you just get an extra. :)

I’m a new bunny mom 😊❤️ . He’s a 9 weeks old male lionhead. He has already familiarized himself with and uses the litter box which is setup with hay piled high in one half and litter in the other half because I heard that bunnies tend to poop while they eat. The problem is he eats his pellets from his dish that is outside of the litter box and poops everywhere. To me it’s easy to clean up but at what age and how did you train your bunny to only poop in the litter box? Thanks for the great video & tips! Very helpful!
@jackiethebunmom4803
@jackiethebunmom4803 3 года назад
I love lionheads! And it sounds like you're both doing a great job already. I know oftentimes young rabbits will regularly poop outside of their litterbox and usually, they do this less often as they get older and more familiar with their routine and environment. Unfortunately, they will probably still poop outside the litter box as long as they are not spayed/neutered but it will happen less frequently with time!
@jackiethebunmom4803
@jackiethebunmom4803 3 года назад
And I don't know if there is a specific age where they are really well litter trained, but in my experience with rabbits, they typically use the litter box regularly after weeks to a couple months in the same environment with the same routine. I wish I could give more concrete answers but they're all so different it's hard to say hehe

having issues with getting my bunny to go to the litter box while eating pellets and drinking water... any suggestions?
@jackiethebunmom4803
@jackiethebunmom4803 3 года назад
So this could be for a couple reasons. If they're still in the process of being litter trained, they may have not gotten the hang of it yet. Or if they aren't spayed/neutered, they may do this instinctively especially if they're a bit younger. The only other thing i can think of is that if you think they're avoiding going in the litter box, it may be because it's uninviting to them for some reason. This could happen for a lot of reasons like if they don't like the specific type of hay, the litter used, or if the box is too small or in a spot they don't like. I know that's a little vague but i hope it helps!

Does your bunny eat only hay? I am wanting to get a bunny soon to litter train but will be also giving it pellet food. Should that go in the litter box too? Also, will the method of cleaning with the water and vinegar work on carpet? I live in an apartment with carpet but want to allow the bunny to roam outside of a cage but I am worried it will destroy the carpet.
@jackiethebunmom4803
@jackiethebunmom4803 3 года назад
Good question! So only hay would go in the litter box and you can use a small food bowl for their pellets. (Also i made this mistake in the past, but bunnies actually eat 85% hay, 10% leafy greens, and 5% pellets. Pellets are even optional if you're giving them enough greens.) And i lived in a carpeted apartment for a while so I used a carpet cleaner meant for pets called Nature's Miracle, but some people use white vinegar too

His litter box is 12in x 10in. 😊 I’m running out of my current litter (aspen) and need to know which product is worth it since I do live in a student apartment for the next 6 months and I wouldn’t wanna buy something that’s too big to carry when I move unless it’s worth it. Unfortunately there’s a good chance it will affect their potty habits. Luckily rabbits can still learn to use the litter box really well even when there’s carpet areas soiled in the past. They may have accidents in specific areas of the carpet even after they’re completely litter trained but sometimes you can block these areas off or cover them with other things like cardboard.

Not at all! They'll still learn in about a week to two weeks if you're consistent with their training. @jackiethebunmom4803
@jackiethebunmom4803 3 года назад
Oh no, yes i think removing it was the best thing to do in that situation! In general, if a rabbits eats a small amount of paper towel, napkin, or toilet paper it isn't a big concern, but if they are trying to ingest large amounts, it should be removed to prevent them. I would sometimes clean up the urine with a napkin, place it in the litter box, and wait until I saw my rabbit hop in to either smell it or use the litter box, then I would remove it to discourage them from chewing on it.

@jackiethebunmom4803 3 года назад
@@marouskamamo9110 hmm I think u can skip the napkin in the litter box step if your rabbit is trying to eat it, and still have them be litter trained. If they ever use the litter box, keep some of the soiled bedding and put it in the new litter box after you clean it out, it'll have a similar effect. And I think of u do the other steps consistently, they'll still learn. And no Rabbits don't respond or learn better from anger or negative reinforcement. I'd make sure they have enough space, toys, and things to chew on because sometimes if they are bored or frustrated, they become a bit more destructive. Hope this helps!

How did you stop your bunny from nipping you?
@jackiethebunmom4803
@jackiethebunmom4803 3 года назад
Good question! So honestly some bunnies may always nip a little bit, but you can decrease how often they do by making some changes to their lifestyle. Sometimes this can mean free-roaming them if that's a possibility or increasing their space or time outside a pen or cage, making sure they have places they feel comfortable in like a rabbit hidey-house, spending more time with them, or sometimes getting another rabbit companion for them can help. Rabbits also seem to nip more when they are not spayed or neutered, so if your rabbit isn't, that may be part of the reason why. There really isn't one guaranteed way to prevent nipping, and negative reinforcement methods like spray bottles or loud noises don't really work with them, so it may take a while of trying different things to see if any of them help deter nipping. Hope this helps!
@tiffanym5474
