We go all the way to Martha's Vineyard to learn how to live stream a remote wedding in this episode of Wedding Filmmaking Behind the Scenes.
🚨The best gear for budget, mid and premium wedding filmmaking kits bit.ly/WFSKit 🚨
Jason braves the many annoyances of getting to a location like this (cars, boats, shuttles, and a pretty long walk) all while showing you how to plan and execute a complicated wedding live stream in a remote location. Jason walks us through how he creates relationships with other vendors and even works through a little DJ "does she really need that lav mic" conflict all in this wedding filmmaking bts.
All-in-all live streaming a wedding is a great way to add revenue to your wedding business but it's not for the faint of heart and has many challenges. We hope this wedding filmmaking behind the scenes gives you some insight on how to pull off your next wedding livestream with flying colors, even if it is in the middle of a field on a remote island!
Keep an eye on this channel for more wedding filmmaking behind the scenes, wedding video gear tutorials, editing guides and more in addition to our podcast, the wedding film school show!

Two years late here, but thanks very much for the video! Some random thoughts as I was watching through... -- Love how compact your whole kit is, and how the ATEM slides out. Very sexy. (Will watch your build video later!) Kind of amazing to me that all your gear is portable enough for you to carry everything across ferries, etc. -- Very cool Jackery battery. Good size for portability. -- Removing the poop. Lol! Felt that... -- Thumbs up for Vidiu Go and using bonding. -- Like the superclamp and magic arm idea, but probably wouldn't do it myself. I just use the cold shoe on the camera body. -- Looks like an overcast day. Hope you had a plan for if it rained. -- Hollyland being a "cleaner setup" than Teradeks... Is that just because there's a battery attached directly to transmitter, so you don't need to do the V-mount/gaffer tape/super clamp/magic arm thing? Well, couldn't you just buy a Sony battery plate to attach a battery directly to the Teradek? A large Sony battery lasts all day. -- But should you be mixing Teradek with Hollyland anyway? I mean, Teradeks will have lower latency, so your audio sync is going to be off? -- That camera doesn't look high enough to look over the tops of people's heads when they stand up for the bride. -- Personal thought on those Teradeks... I don't like them! Whole bunch of reasons. For instance: (1) I've found that receiver and transmitter can take ages to find each other after you turn them on. Very stressful when setting up; (2) those Teradeks really like line of sight, and they're not good at going through solid objects, which I think is very limiting; (3) I think they prioritize low latency over signal quality, because they're designed for applications like pulling focus on a set. If you do get signal interference, your image will break up first before cutting off. Other types of transmitters don't care about latency, and instead prioritize maintaining a complete image. Personally, I think this looks better on a livestream... -- Using jacket as monitor hood = filmmaker cred. I don't know what alternative is, apart from bringing a small high nits monitor. -- Don't know why wind would affect video signal. Am very skeptical it would. I tend to find that if you have any sort of "intermittent" signal issue, where the signal is sometimes there and sometimes isn't, regardless of whether it's an audio or video signal, or a computer monitor, usually the problem is a cable that's only partially plugged in. -- Wireless Go... Some reasons I don't like them: (1) they're just flaky; sometimes they crap out for no reason; (2) they really like line of sight. Not bad in environments like outdoor ceremony, but can be blocked by walls, altar tables, etc when indoors; (3) when you've got an environment (like a livestream!) where there's lots of digital transmission devices, they perform even worse -- their range drops. Bring back the Sennheiser RF sets! -- Other videography team. You could consider mounting receivers to the other team's cameras. This could introduce a whole host of problems (cameras don't match; their cameras aren't set up for clean HDMI out; their cameras might move unexpectedly when you cut to them) or it could turn out awesome. -- If your signal from the audio recorder is dirty, there are various devices that can "clean" a signal. -- Is that musician miked up in any way? If he's not going through the speakers, how do you get his audio through the livestream? -- That camera wasn't high enough after all! :) But I get it. A tall tripod might be impractical to take across ferries etc. But I can't shake the feeling that the BTS guy's side-angle often had a lot better view than the other cameras. -- To be honest, I think you maybe should have set things up so that your desk was next to one or both of the cameras, so you could adjust when you have to. Firstly, this gives you a lot more flexibility to adjust for better framing. But it also puts you in a better position to troubleshoot -- like, what if a battery craps out in the middle, or a transmitter stops working? -- Other video team -- I don't see many fig rigs at weddings. Interesting. -- I think it's worthwhile getting really good quality HDMI cables... And possibly you had a dodgy audio cable as well, if your audio mixer wasn't giving a clean out... Or maybe that could be like a line/mic level thing? Thanks again for the video!!!

I LOVE this because I can feel your pain. I've been there on multiple occasions setting up for client live streams and everything that can go wrong WILL go wrong. There are too many people on RU-vid that just test equipment or do reviews on equipment but do not show actual work in the field. A quick side note that could help people and may help them figure out how to do things a little differently... I was in the middle of a live stream once ...had everything set up... everything's going well and then one of the speakers got up (her speech was based on breathing exercises) and she asked everybody to get up and walk outside!! I'm sitting there, cameras on, looking at an empty room. Definitely caused me to change up some of my production setup in the future! LOL

The only serious problem I see here as to the Groom potentially being require to wear 3 mics! One fir the stream, the 2nd for the videographer and then a 3rd for the DJ! I would have run a mic break out box from the mic stand and perhap run cable as an ultimate fail safe for the sound. I not believe you mentioned an explanation why the video from the 2nd camera was cutting out. Smart move keeking all your switching gear in that one case. Appreciate you sharing this experience.

I notice you're using the Rode Go II, and I've had great success with these at film shoots, but they've been crapping out on me during livestreams (suddenly severe dropout when put on the groom or efficient). Have you had issues with dropouts? I'm trying to track down the problem as it's hit-n-miss. It's not cell phones since i've ran long range tests in busy rooms with tons of people and it's fine. -- Also if I solve the dropout, trying to figure the best way to feed the DJ's 'speaker/line out' into the Rodes to send over to my mixer. Trying to find the most elegant way of matching signal strength into the Rodes. -Thx!
@WeddingFilmSchool
@WeddingFilmSchool 2 года назад
I have definitely found the Rode go IIs to be somewhat hit or miss. That being said for a live stream I just think they’re the best mix of convenience and quality. The fact that you get a stereo receiver and those tiny little transmitters makes it just so appealing to me. That being said I totally don’t trust them to record critical audio for a wedding highlight or some thing where I really needed the audio.

Very nice video as always Jason. The best thing is to see that these situations occur anywhere in the world hahahhaha. Did you stream the live directly through the vidiu or used it on client mode for the laptop or the atem? Thanks a lot.
@WeddingFilmSchool
@WeddingFilmSchool 2 года назад
We all go through that stuff! I used the laptop for the ATEM and streamed directly on the Vidiu to get the advantage of the bonding. Sometimes I do t even bother with the Vidiu though. I prefer just using the ATEM if I can get away with it. Jay
