Truck campers are the perfect RV for exploring both the more common parts of the world as well as getting off the beaten road to experience more of the road less traveled.
We have taken our flatbed truck camper the entire length of the Dalton Highway in Alaska, on numerous off-road adventures throughout the United States and all throughout Baja, Mexico.
So we can definitively say that a truck camper is the perfect combination of mobility, durability and, of course, the convenience of home that you expect in an RV.
If you just bought a truck camper, or are considering purchasing one, you may be wondering how to load a truck camper onto your pickup truck.
It is simple. And complex. But really it’s just a matter of following a few steps that will become common and routine after you practice a few times.
Loading and unloading a truck camper can be stressful (particularly on a relationship between you and your significant other!). And while it seems common sense, we did struggle the first few times that we loaded and unloaded our truck camper from the bed of our pickup truck.
But after nearly 3 years of living full-time in our truck camper, we’ve boiled the process of how to load a truck camper into these simple steps.

I can imagine! We don't use them that often, but in the times we'd have to manually crank them I would fuss!

Great video guys. Can you sleep in the overhead bed without it tipping when not on the truck?
@CalledToWander
@CalledToWander 3 года назад
Thanks! Yes you absolutely can! We always lower the camper to only being 6-8" off the ground for added stability. But we've lived for weeks out of the camper when our truck was being repaired and there was no issue with it's stability! Thanks for watching and reaching out!

I .noticed only takes 3 jacks to support my camper. As I load and unload I notice one sometimes has no pressure underneath.
@CalledToWander
@CalledToWander Год назад
3 is dangerous. We had one jack motor that did not go down as fast as the others and we always had to double check contact with it to establish 4 points of contact. The first time we noticed this we were fortunate to catch the camper before it tipped. With 3 points it would not have necessarily tipped over entirely, but could have torqued the other jacks or damaged other structural components.

I notice when I'm jacking mine up almost always one Jack has no pressure . I have to go way up to clear my truck and it's sketchy old hydrolic jacks .

Thanks for the video. How long before you were comfortable loading/unloading?
@CalledToWander
@CalledToWander 3 года назад
2.5 years! ;) When we first started we had our second house battery on the truck and the first in the camper. So we had to disconnect cables between those two and the inverter in the camper (connected directly to battery 2). This took a bunch of time. But since we moved the batteries in the camper we can drop the camper in about 10 mins. Loading takes a little longer because I (Chris) at rarely accurate in lining up the bed with the camper. To my credit we only have about an inch of wiggle room between our jacks and flatbed in either side. Otherwise it would not have taken more than a handful of times to feel confident about loading/unloading!

Do I need to pull something in to do this? I see you were unplugging a thick wire.
@CalledToWander
@CalledToWander Год назад
We had a separate battery on the flatbed that required disconnecting. That may be what you saw. Depends on your wiring. But usually you just have the wire harness to disconnect and that’s it.

Thanks for the video. What is keeping those tool boxes from moving around on the bed? Are they welded on? Thanks
@CalledToWander
@CalledToWander 3 года назад
Bolted. We drilled holes through the aluminum boxes and the steel bed and bolted the boxes to the bed. We also bolted the two boxes together on the passenger side as well. Nuts and bolts are simple fixes that allowed us to take the boxes on and off at times for a complete flatbed when we needed it.

@@CalledToWander thanks so much, that sounds like an easy way to mount them.
@CalledToWander
@CalledToWander 3 года назад
@@adamh7947 Easy, inexpensive, temporary and secure. We never had an issue with them and we did remove them on occasion to repaint the bed with Rustoleum and to haul stuff around in good truck form. Glad it helps!

After I load my camper my tire psi dropped to 45 from 75, Do I need to inflate the tire back to max cold psi?
@CalledToWander
@CalledToWander 10 месяцев назад
Psi should not drop. Check for leaks. The tire will flatten out and spread out the pressure but should not lose pressure. Definitely top back up!
@CalledToWander
@CalledToWander 10 месяцев назад
We always kept our tires at max psi (80 psi with our Toyo All terrains). We would air down our airbag suspension if the camper was off, just for smoother ride. But kept tires aired up. And we never aired down for soft sand, etc. as we were too heavy to comfortably drive through soft sand anyway.

Hey how wide is your bed? And what is the measurement inside to inside on the jacks? I have a flat deck and want to load a camper but I’m worried that there won’t be enough clearance to get it mounted. Is it ok to rub the jacks slightly as you back the truck in?
@CalledToWander
@CalledToWander 10 месяцев назад
We sold the TC almost 3 years ago so don’t have the dimensions. But the bed was wide and we only had about a half of an inch on either side between the bed and the jacks. We got very, very good at precise loading and unloading. And yes, every now and then the jacks would get rubbed gently. I always stopped and reconfigured so that I did not damage them. You could potentially add dually jacks that swing out wider. We considered this but then sold out TC to get a bigger Rv.

How is easy is all this to do for a solo traveler? I've been debating between a camper van or a truck and camper. I lean towards the second one as I could still stay in the camper if the truck needed repairs or vice versa. I found this video when searching for this topic but I'll look at more of your videos.
@CalledToWander
@CalledToWander 2 года назад
We have met plenty of single people living this lifestyle and there is quite a bit of freedom in that you'll have more room and decision-making is cut in half. We were fortunate with our near catastrophic breakdown that we could separate the truck and camper so we lived in the camper for months while our truck was getting repaired. But I wouldn't base your entire decision on that. If you have other uses for the truck when you're not camping thats big too. Most of the TC people we know use their truck frequently if not living full-time in it. But full-time TC people rarely drop their camper. We did in the spot in this video because we wanted to drive some narrow, windy mountain roads that we couldn't do with the full load. There are definitely pros and cons to every RV. If you have a great truck already, it's less investment to get started. But if you're buying a truck and camper then it can be expensive. We opted for a TC instead of a van because of the extra room we thought we'd have (head clearance as Chris is 6'4"). But there are some great van options now with higher roof height and longer wheelbase for additional living space. The truck camper life is a community we really enjoyed when we had ours (changed to a Class C motorhome last fall). But the van community is awesome as well! So many variables to consider! Send us an email and let us know if you need any additional help!

@@CalledToWander thank you for such a detailed response! I don't have a truck, just an SUV, 6 cylinder. I've been wanting a truck for reasons beyond camping but could tow a camper or have a truck camper. But a camper van also offers good options. Lots to consider. I will definitely contact you for more information if it's not covered in your videos.
