The non-dominant foot will lift into the air on high-level forehands. This is a direct result of the optimal loading position players put themselves in 90% of the time. In this video, I explain how to load the forehand with the optimal setup to achieve more power & control.

My son was doing this naturally at age 9 and a coach told him to "feel the ground" meaning to keep both feet on the ground. It took him a long time to get back the rythym on his forehand.

Some coaches I have came across criticised me doing this non dominant leg lifting when hitting a open stance forehand stroke ( naturally). I was therefore always confused cause this was a natural motion seen in several matches and videos of very top players. Your vídeo now explains in a very clear manner why this naturally happens. Thank you for your video.

Fabio Zapletal I know what you mean. When I first picked up tennis, I was always told by my seniors not to make such subtle movements and listened to them. It was only after injuries had I learned that those movements are essential and should not be deliberately stopped as they are essential to the natural movements of the body to relieve the stress on certain parts of your bodies such as your knees or ankles. After becoming better myself, I realize that there were so many flaws in their movements and I was right all along. Sometimes coaches or upperclassmen just like to spew bs lol

Pao Choua Yang Lol all very very very true!! Reading your reply was like a real flash back to what happened to me a while ago. Good news though is that we now have such excellent video channels like this intuitive tennis to explore and improve every day. Brazil , where I live, still struggles with several coaches that are not properly qualified/ certified .

The most useful forehand lesson I've ever seen. At least 3 coaches have told me never to lift the off-leg, unless it's done to move forward; I never understood how they could disagree with so many tour pros.

VERDASCO DOES THIS ! I copied his forehand in months of work on my own with all its details as a youngster so I do it, too. We both have dynamite forehands. B-) This footage is highly useful for any player looking for added power. Accelerating the arm makes the ball go fast but using the legs brings weight and severe power into the shot.

Great description of the body rotation as lift and swinging the torso. Much more intuitive to me than using hip rotation. I think this will solve my problem of using too much arm and not enough body rotation as I will now have an easy mental cue and image of lifting on the forward swing. Thanks Nick!

Thanks for the video! I was also taught that this wasn't supposed to happen and have been struggling with my footwork. The real issue is that I should improve my closed stance and unit turn, instead of trying to reduce lifting my non-dominant foot. It's strange how some coaches see this as a fault in technique however..

I also liked your kinetic chain video. I think that a lot of people push off of their non-dominate leg and swing around too early. This ends up causing poor control. This is based off the myth that the kinetic chain must start from the ground up.

great explanation. in baseball i often heard about “unweighting” the other leg as a term to describe this and to make sure you are getting weight shifted in the direction you want. So cool how this happens in all these different ways, depending on the direction of force. As an adult new to tennis (with a strong flat forehand) i find a lot of similarities to positions i was in while playing baseball. tennis is basically having a sidearm two seam catch with your partner.

Thank you so much! As a beginner, I notice that subconsciously lift my left foot when I hit forehand. I also think that is because my right leg will stop bending right after I hit forehand. Based on the video, it looks like you would straighten your right leg right after you hit forehand. Is that true? Sometimes my coach says my body should not appear to “bounce” right after I hit forehand... thank you so much for your helpful instruction!

coach, I wish I'd seen this video earlier. In my last lesson pre-COVID, the pro said I had a good FH except that I tended to keep my weight on my right side too long and was lifting up my left leg... so for the last year I've been trying to stay "grounded" Oh well; better late than never. won't try to lift up my leg but I'm not going to stop it either.

Hi Coach, I have a problem I think you can help a lot with. The two shots I struggle the most with are serves and returns because I feel uncomfortable and awkward starting without any momentum. Do you have any tips on how to get a bit of momentum going when starting a serve or return, so I don't start static?
@jackspradlin4183

I always try to get elbow away from body so not in the way during swing, but still have issues, 4.0 player, rarely hit open or semi usually neutral, but practicing the other 2 stances and realized how in open stance much easier to get weight fully on dominant leg. When back leg is fully loaded, very little weight on other leg, will that help with more elbow room as I swing ? I hit with slight bend in elbow. I am also working on better spacing.
@PaulVoorberg
@PaulVoorberg 6 месяцев назад
What about loading the back leg as you start the stroke and completing the stroke with a transition from the back leg to the front leg? I've been hitting like that lately as I feel the forward drive gives me more power and stability. My back leg doesn't necessarily come off the ground at the end- when I shadow swing my back leg ends up being on its toes.
@the1tfactor
@the1tfactor 3 года назад
This seems like a way to get a powerful stroke when the ball has gotten in on you, rather than a standard neutral or open stance. Is this to improve timing?
@hakimnelson-wilder6266
@hakimnelson-wilder6266 4 года назад
I do this all the time loading my left foot and then transferring the weight to my right. I notice most ATP players completely leave the ground (both feet) when they hit a powerful forehand. I only get one foot off. I’d love a video explaining the modern ATP forehand.

Is there a pause in torso rotation at the moment of contact? Looking at Federer's forehand for example there is a slightly pause. But does it necessarily has to happen? And if it does do we need to consciously make it happen or it happens automatically and caused by the resistance of the ball? Thanks!

@@IntuitiveTennis Any update here on this video? Interested! To fall backwards on forehands like you are doing here seems against everything I've been taught (unless just don't have time for any other option) and tough to transfer weight into the shot or hit an approach. Would be great to see some slow motion of a few pros actually lifting their front leg and falling backwards.

When should you hit from dominant vs non-dominant leg? Should hitting from the dominant leg be the default unless we have a reason not to (like a shallower ball we step into)? Recently I've noticed I was transferring my weight (or hit off the non-dominant leg) on majority of my shots, even when hitting open stance. Trying to consciously hit from the dominant leg was almost like a magic fix which yielded me a ton of power at the same level of effort (and similar rate of errors). Hence I'm wondering, when is it __not__ a good time to hit off the dominant leg? Maybe it would be a good topic for a video 👍
