How to lock a wheelie bin

In this video I show you how to lock a wheelie bin. After arriving home after a long day I found that the council refuse collectors had refused to empty my recycle bin because somebody had contaminated it with rubbish not allowed in the recycle bin. After taking the rubbish out by hand (eggshells, nappies, food waste) I decided to find a way of locking my wheelie bin to avoid this happening again.
In this video, I demonstrate the process I used to lock my recycle bin which cost me £1!
PLEASE SUBSCRIBE! Thanks :)

Great idea! I live in a flat and although we have shared recycling bins, each flat has its own black wheelie bin which is only emptied one a month. Some cheeky sod has been putting their rubbish in my bin and filling it up which is driving me mad but I can’t really afford the most secure locks on the market and the cheaper ones seem sort of flimsy so would probably be a waste. This is simple and ingenious. Love it 👍

Someone stole 2 trash bags out of my bin the other night. Found it quite strange, but someone said they're looking for personal information. I def need to get a lock on my bin and I think this method will work just fine. Thank you !!

Might be worth putting a lock around both handles on the bin so they can't squeeze any rubbish into that little gap that's still there when the lock is applied. I'm gonna anyway just so they can't put so much as an empty can in my bin lol.

Once unlocked for bin men and you're off to work, people creep out of crevices to fill up your bin with all-sorts. Good Idea for non collection days though.

I am also thinking of doing the same. Thank you for sharing! I have to leave my bins by the front door as I have no access to my garden. It's very annoying ppl just fill up my bins leaving no room for my rubbish when I still have days till collection. Very frustrating since I have a child in nappies.

So what happens on the day of collection when you have to take the lock off. Nothing stopping someone from using the bin then to put their rubbish in

Good idea. Our green compost bin which we keep outside the gated area in winter, Canadian winter. Lately one of our neighbours has been tossing their compost food wastes in our bin, but they place it in our bins loosely. Meaning it's just food waste bits, all loose, and now our compost bin is all filthy with food grime. We normally use compostable trash bins bags for our food wastes. So come the spring, we plan on calling the city hotline to order a new bin. Indicating our bin has been contaminated due to bad neighbours. Unfortunately, in the winter months, due to snow build-up and ice. There are times we can not open the gate to bring the wheelie bins inside the backyard. Not sure how well this would work in our minus 30C Alberta winter weather. As I worry about a lock freezing. But a great idea for the spring, summer and autumn months.

Thanks for this! Especially with COVID19 - I am more sick of dirty nappies shoved in the recycling than ever. I live in block of small units & for 10 years we’ve all happily shared the set of allocated bins but a huge family moved into one flat who fill the whole lot the same day it’s collected & put nappies in the recycle 😡. They even got a new kitchen and have been filling the bins with the old kitchen piece by piece instead of paying for removal like everyone else has to. I ordered my own set and I’ve been wondering how I would do this. Such a shame and now I look like a miserable bitch to the other neighbours, but it’s better than weeks of recycling accumulating on my balcony because I can’t get to the 🗑 fast enough. Sorry for the bin rage 😞

I think you can make a wheelie bin storage and lock that up. On the day of collection you will have to open the lock up so the bin man can empty it, you never know people still can put inside your bin before the bin man comes. My bin got stolen on my day of collection, worth putting a security camera.

@@LitchfieldsLifestyles This is the first time she did it but not the first issue I had with her. I mean what happen to the days of neighbors asking to put something in your bin or park in your drive way for an hour or two? She mad because I went so far as to put my bins as close to the end of my driveway as possible so that she would actually have to come ask to park in my drive way. and now she just got her roof foxed and filled up her two bins with the left over stuff and started putting it in my bin. I wonder if I could legally put handles on the side and get a bike chain and keep it closed that way. and maybe a dog chain and hook one end to my porch and the other to my bins so she can't drag either one to her side. My momma had to get a thick chain for her table in the back yard so the jerks on the other side of the alley couldn't take it like they did everything else. So, I no stranger to using chains. Mom was clever when it came to stopping people. She once in our old house pushed her fence back to the alley just to keep strangers from parking on her property.

Oh my life! That's exactly me @ the min. Cheeky neighbour from across the street & around the corner, thinks it's their extra bins! ( I too live in a flat with 4 Tennants). We have 1 large bin 4 us 4. I confronted this girl who came & put rubbish in. Her excuse was ' it's a community bin.' I said unless I'm short sighted where does it say that on the bin. Once your bin is put to the kerb here it’s contents automatically become the property of the local council. It is not illegal to put rubbish in a bin on the kerb. You don’t actually own the bin you just technically rent it from the council via council rates. I totally understand what you’re trying to do and why you’re annoyed by this please don’t get me wrong because I agree with you but unfortunately this isn’t going to be a great solution. It may deter some but technically they’re not doing anything illegal using your bin. The camera idea however is great because it is illegal to put the incorrect waste in the incorrect bin so you can catch them red handed in that situation.
@eaglebald
@eaglebald 2 месяца назад
@@kazng4023This is false, while you do not own the bin, you do pay for the service, and it is in fact illegal in most areas to use someone else’s bin without their permission, even when it’s rolled out to the street for pickup, and it violates laws/codes in several ways: 1. It is trespassing, 2. It is improper waste disposal, 3. It is theft of service. While it is a hassle that most would rather not pursue, these violations have been successfully adjudicated in court many times.

@kazng4023

Litchfield's Lifestyles then that just defeats the whole purpose. For example you put your bin out the night before (locked with your contraption) you then have to wake up before 6am in my area to unlock it for the collection (which could happen any time of the morning from 5.30am-10am). You head off to work before the bin is collected obviously because if you worked from home you wouldn’t need this and your unlocked empty bin sits there on the street till 4pm or later just begging to have more rubbish dumped in it. So what will you actually achieve?
