How to Lock an Expensive Bike in 3 Minutes

Bicycles can get very expensive… especially electric bikes or carbon fiber road bikes. You want to make sure nobody steals the bike or any of the components connected to it like the seat post, saddle or wheels. There are many ways to go about securing a bike but the most popular way I’ve heard and the most proven technique I’ve tried is to lock the frame and rear wheel to a secure rack while looping a cable through the front wheel and saddle rails. In some cases, a bike thief might steal an entire rack and all bikes attached to it and in other cases if left outside overnight, the bars of your u-lock could be cut and cables snipped. It’s not possible to secure against every kind of attack but following these steps makes you less vulnerable because it adds time and effort required to steal. It also puts you one step ahead of the other bikes that are locked up at the rack. EBR was paid to perform this review #Sponsored We try to be honest, thorough, and fun! Yeah, I tend to agree... have a few more tips back in the guide and some people have commented here about NFC tracking solutions but the best solutions are bike valet, security cameras and sticking to areas you trust (or buying a cheap bike for daily riding)

@@ElectricBikeReview I would like to add these few items to the list considering the price of your electric bike: Alarm system, personal guard and some cayenne pepper spray. Why the latter? To spray the guard who might try to steal your precious bike after realizing it cost so much ;)` Thanks for video, really informative!

Pro tip: The d-lock doesn't have to go through the frame, its enough if you lock the rear wheel somewhere inside the rear triangle. You will not be able to remove the rear wheel, because you would need to pull the d-lock and anything its attached to through between the two rear triangles. You would need to cut the wheel to free the frame. Also what you lock it onto should be at least as strong as the lock. Avoid cast iron railings for example.

A thief who knows what he is doing can get this bike in under a minute. The tools to get through these locks can be bought for less money than the locks themselves. Harbor Freight sells gigantic bolt cutters and battery operated grinders quite cheap.
@rollforever_85
@rollforever_85 6 лет назад
tarstarkusz it's still good to try and make it as much of a ball ache as possible and they will hopefully move on to an easier score. But of course, if someone's determined enough, they will take that bike. "Challenge accepted" :(
@tarstarkusz
@tarstarkusz 6 лет назад
+bin.... When you buy a lock, you are really trying to get the thief to go after a bike other than yours. You are trying to make your particular bike a less viable target. The problem is this only works with like bicycles. If some thief sees a $5k e-bike, you are no longer just trying to make your bike less desirable to the criminal, you are actually trying to keep a thief at bay. They make a "club" for bikes that you can lock onto your wheels. The more mass you can put into the various locks the better. Also, you should try to lock your bike in such a way that it would be difficult to break the lock without damaging the bike.

Also, a ulock and cable require 2 different sets of tools futher complecating things for the bastards. I use 3 different things...ulock, cable, chain.

I think this technique is good for during the day when you’re on the go in busy areas but I would recommend using two ulocks and bypassing the cables if you’re going to lock it at night or in a more secluded area. And for the seat my bike guy recommended the bolts to secure the seat as oppose to quick release.

I'm not sure it's a huge deal if you don't have quick release... but some seats and suspension posts can be very expensive. If you're locking the wheel and frame already then the $7 thin cable is easy easy to add and it's light and compact so I usually do it :)

Some tactics: 0. Use motorcycle locks (heavier, beefier, not priced for the "boutique" bicyclist. : ) 1. Put the U-lock through a frame "triangle (not where the frame can be disassembled.). 2. Route the cables up high, away from the ground (so there's no leverage for a cutting tool to be braced against the ground. 3. Route a cable through the chain ring. 4. Personal trick: A luggage alarm or motorcycle rotor lock (motion activated siren) which can be clamped onto a brake rotor or through the locks. 5. Choose a U-lock that remains attached to the frame in a carrier with a design that inhibits cutting or sawing. Also, I've just read about an internally pressurized stink/stain "skunk bomb" deterrent built into some u-bolt bike locks.
@leifforsstrom
@leifforsstrom 7 лет назад
Good thinking. In Courts example you can take the frame and leave the swingarm and saddle with the wheels pretty noiseless. But you can always put your bike next to an more expensive bike with a bad lock? How strong are the Wires? How much (weight and space) do you want to carry with you just for locking the bike? And time to do lock/unlock. And yet your bike or parts get stolen. In sweden the burglars cuts the bikerack and deal with the locks at quieter place later. :-(

Cable locks can be cut in seconds but what if it had an alarm which was either motion or cut sensitive (option in the lock), and it would be used together with the D-lock (which can be cut with a grinder only) - much more secure combination. Edit: if expensive enough, hidden GPS transponder. Hidden main switch for a e-bike.

Good stuff. I have been researching locking systems on the internet and boy is there a lot of data out there, LOL. However, I think you have a golden opportunity to do a vid on the subject. Perhaps a 2 or 3 part series due to the amount of depth it could be. One of the first things I noticed is that locking requirements are rated. IE if you live in say NY. The last thing I noted was... buy a good U lock that locks on both ends. Anyway I think you would do the topic a great service. Good vids and thanks. Darryl from Victoria, BC.

You could eliminate the need for the thin cable by removing the front wheel and putting it next to the rear wheel and looping a thick cable thru the seat and both wheels. The cable can be 4 ft long or less. With my ProdecoTech bike I just lower the seat and fold bike. The cable stays coiled permanently under the seat when not locked.

How about a safe way to lock bikes on hitch mout bike rack? Recently had $10,000 worth of bikes stolen off a thule T2 pro hitch mount bike rack using their tiny cable lock that was part of the bike rack. It happened when traveling on the back of our car when stopped to do a thirty min hike where no bikes were allowed. Been thinking some way to rig up two beefy chain locks like Hiplok. I know no system is perfect. Just want to be able to leave them on the car for a few hours say at national park parking lot or the like. Bikes won't fit in the car with all our camping gear. Any ideas would be super helpful! Thank you in advance!

@DonzLockz 6 лет назад
Kevin McBride 15mm cable can still be cut easily with hand stainless steel wire clippers very easily and easy to conceal, plus cheap. Use 12mm highly tough Pewag chain only a grinder van cut it. Put on a bike rack with a small box for the chain & locks. I use $500 worth of chain & locks for a $1300 mountain bike. Note more than 1 chain & lock. This guys $6k bike will get pinched with his poor lock setup.

Very easy to steal the front quick release through axel... its best to bring duct tape for all the easy to steal parts and tape things safe. For instance you can tape over your bike lock and boom surprise lock to any thief taking the security tape off. No one has had their bike stolen while using this tape method, I'm very sure.

Would be a bit more bulky but I believe there are cables that are deliberately too wide for a set of bolt cutters to fit over. Because those are stranded they will be "chewy" and take some time to cut through but if you cant get cutters over it that is another level of deterrent right there. Another thing you can do to discourage component theft is remove all that quick disconnect and adjust stuff with cams and levers and put nuts and bolts in their place. Your setup looks pretty good. I hope you keep your bike. Someone stole mine long ago when I used just a chain and cheap padlock.

There are other options to secure your saddle and wheels - like pinhead or abus nutfix. Replacing the quick release makes it more difficult - the abus one you have to lay your bike on the ground to change it - only good if you're the only one who uses it and don't need to remove it for transport. The U lock is better trough your frame triangle. Because if you snipped your cables, removed the rear wheel, a thief could take everything. Only really necessary in big cities. I would prefer separate locks - more hassle for you, but also for a thief. Maybe a short chain link lock (60 - 80cm) for rear wheel, frame and bicycle rack. And your U-Lock for frame and front wheel. Seat maybe with a short cable lock to your frame. From Abus you can get locks that have the same key.

I have gone with an Abus folding alarm lock, a U lock, a cable lock and an additional, cheap, motion alarm. All except the U lock attach to the frame for carrying. I expect most thieves will be put off by amount to cut and alarms going off at the same time. Still vulnerable so considering data dot protection.

I got my bike a big steel cage around the seat so people couldn't steal it, but it got pretty heavy so I had a turbocharged V6 motor installed to help move it around. I leave it on the street and in parking lots all the time, no one has stolen it yet.

‘Hexlox’ are also good to stop nuts to seat posts and wheels being removed and stolen. No need to carry extra cables.

If you have a dropper or expensive seat or seat post check out Toronto Cycles. They make titanium security bolts that can't be undone without their special tool just like the tools for security lug nuts. Definitely cheap insurance and you don't have to wrap cable locks all over your bike every time you lock it up. They have them for rear derailleurs and other bolts as well so you can really make most of the parts on your bike thief proof.
