How to Long Line Troll for Crappie in a Kayak (The Spring Bite is on Fire!!!)

I went out to Shearon Harris Monday night and the fishing did not disappoint! I've been pulling crankbaits the last few outings, but this time I decided to switch over to minnows and jigs, as I've had better luck targeting crappie with them. I ended-up catching around 30 fish in about 3.5 hours of fishing. Although I threw back a lot of short fish (they're not in the video), I got a lot of quality keepers, including a few jumbo 12" perch, a nice 14" crappie, and a channel catfish that weighed several pounds. All in all, a great evening out on the water!
In the video, I'm using 1/16 and 1/8 oz red jigheads, either tipped with minnows or black and chartreuse Bobby Garland Stroll'r jig bodies that I slather with Pro Cure Crappie and Panfish Super Gel. I troll 0.9 mph most of the time in 6-9 feet of water, doing my best to follow the contours on my fishfinder and avoid shallower water and snags.
The bite is really good right now and I got multiple doubles and at least 1-2 triple hits. Conditions seem to be best when it's rainy / overcast / windy, as that's when the fish are biting right now. Tight lines, y'all!

Every time I get a good pull on my line, I'm always hopeful that it's a nice slab like that, but it usually turns out to be a catfish. D'oh!

I just found your video. Thanks for posting your setup. I am in Greensboro and have been trolling crankbaits for the last month on the local lakes. I catch a lot of white perch, some crappie, and on my last trip, a 7lb largemouth. The crankbaits attract small perch and the occasional crappie. I probably catch 10 perch to one crappie trolling. The jig heads and soft bait may be a better option. I am going to try that next time out to see if my crappie hookup ratio goes up like yours!

I like the crank baits, as they tend to hold onto the fish better bc of the treble hooks. However, I think the vibrations tend to attract a lot of other species, so it makes it difficult to just target crappie with them. I definitely catch more crappie when I just troll jigs… with the water starting to cool down for the fall, then next 4-6 weeks should be a really good time to start loading the cooler-up while pulling jigs or minnows. Good luck and LMK how you do!

@@RedWolf3773 One final tip, I like to give a little squirt of crappie / panfish procure on the plastics. It sticks pretty well and I think it does get more bites and keep the fish holding on a bit longer
