Ivy is native here in Germany so honestly, I can just go anywhere and get a lot of varieties that way, cuz often enough, people are happy about it when you trim their ivy because it grows so easily and massive. So, the next time I go on a walk, I'm gonna make sure to collect some ivy cuttings to put in my home haha.

You’re so right! Here is Western US, ivy is so invasive. I’ve been battling it in my yard for years. It can self propagate so easily here, a lawn mower attack turns into a Sorcerer’s Apprentice reinactment (you know the scene where he smashes the broom and each splinter turns into a new broom). It was so interesting to hear you describe its needs, such as nutrient rich soil.

Your video is very thorough on information about Hedera Helix. My first experience with my first every ivy die on me. I might have had root rot or my ivy might had a disease. All the leaves die. Eventually the stems turn brown and black. As of today Aug 4th 2020 I put my ivy in a hydroponic pot with a wick going into the soil feeding filter water to the mixed potting soil with 19% of nitrogen and other plant food fertilizer in the soil and also in the bottle of the water of pot desolving in the water.

I am glad I saw your video. I have 2 varieties of Ivy in my house, and my oldest one has been slowly dying. I repoted about 6 months ago, and didn't notice any rot in the roots. It was also looking fine back then. I realized these past few months that it wasn't looking good because the new leaves are all coming curly, and just yesterday I had to cut a whole vine because it was practically dried. The other two vines look like are also drying out. I will repot it again to check if there's any problem with the roots. I don't think I am over watering, I actually thought I was under watering it, but honestly don't know what to do to save this poor plant. It's unbelievable how beautiful she was up to this point :(

They've been in water a couple of month and are finally ready to pot again!! Any care tips for when it's repotted?

Lucy your smile is infectious such a fine quality to have. I have just been gifted a German Ivy, as the tag states. It was outdoors all Summer long and with Fall snow arriving in the coming weeks it will not survive. My plan is to take cuttings to propagate and keep alive for next year. Is the German Ivy like English Ivy that being better suited for indoors? thanks

Please help! my plant swedish ivy was fine for 20 years, all of a sudden it started to wilt from over watering. lost all the leaves. Remove rotten roots and dry branches. change substrate with a new one. but for a month she has not had outbreaks. Do I let the substrate dry to water again or do I need to water constantly? What can I do to get it back? it has very good temperature and good light conditions. Spring is about to begin in Mexico. I dont know what else have to do?😥

Hi Lucy! I have repotted my ivy recently in a clay pot with a hole, and her soil is still holding too much water. Should I be using 50% potting mix and 50% perlite? The potting mix already has perlite in it so I would be adding additional perlite.
@lucybloom5463
@lucybloom5463 3 года назад
Hiya, Moselle! 50/50 split sounds good to me, although I would not add any more than that or your plant may struggle to get nutrients. What was the potting mix like? Was it specifically for inside plants or was it a compost mix for outside plants? Although I use normal compost all the time it does tend to be a bit less draining and can be quite peat heavy. If you think the soil is just not working at all you might want to repot again now before it gets too far into winter (nobody wants to be repotting in December/January/February). You could try buying a few things like vermiculite, orchid bark, and horecultural charcoal, which are all good for drainage. Add these to some perlite and new houseplant compost. I am unsure of the ratios (I've never used them all together before) but I could look into it for you. I know that sounds like a lot but you don't necessarily need to buy it all! Just look into what each of the components does, access what your plant needs , and buy accordingly. And if you have any more problems just give me a comment again! 🙂

Hi! I have three ivys and all three are loosing leaves! They aren’t dried but the leaves which are not crispy at all are falling off! As soon as I touch a leaf it falls of! Do you know what the issue is?
@genpaints6921

So I have an ivy plant that I bought like 6 months ago but I just recently noticed all the ivy in the center of the pot has dried and died. All the ones that are hanging off the pot are doing good should I repot my plant?
@lucybloom5463
@lucybloom5463 3 года назад
Oh no! It's a wee bit hard to figure out what's going on without seeing it. Ivies are tricky, although it may sound like the centre has died because it was under watered sometimes when ivies are over watered they go crispy, dry, and die too. They are a puzzle! I would also check the plant for bugs, there is always a chance you have a wee infestation. It might be difficult to separate the dead bits from the alive bits (especially because the dead bits are in the middle) but I would recommend repotting (provided that, I'd you have bugs, you have taken care of them). To do so, get the ivy out of its pot, clean as much dirt off the roots as you can ,and then run the roots under the sink so you can separate easier. From there repott into fresh house plant soil with some perlite (if you had any vermiculite/horecultural charcoal that would not go a miss ether). I hope this helps!

Is it normal for english vy to shed old leaves? Mine has started to drop the oldest leaves near the base of the vines so its looking a little bit bald at the top but fuller at the down the vines. Hopefully new ones will form where old ones dropped?
@lucybloom5463
@lucybloom5463 3 года назад
Hiya! English ivy's is evergreen but it's not uncommon for them to drop a few leaves occasionally. It really just depends on how many leaves you are talking about. If it's just a couple then your plant should be hunky dory. If it's rather a lot then there is a chance something is going wrong. Don't worry! Ivy can grow their leaves back in baldy areas. Just do some trouble shooting. Is your plant in a drafty or cold area? Is it getting indirect light? How much are you watering it? Just have a wee think about the basic care it's getting (the video will help you out there) and search for any problems 🙂 I know, that's so unspecific! Working out what's up with your plants is a nightmare. Hope you figure out what's wrong. Feel free to post another question if you are still stuck.

I'd put my ivy plant in a non draining pot with some stones at the bottom, after a couple months it mostly died except for one stem in the middle which has a few small leaves. I had placed it onto a north east facing windowsill, so no afternoon sun. After watching this I have repotted it into a self draining pot with a dish underneath and given it a good water. Hopefully that'll do the trick, if not I'm giving up lol. Your plants and your hair, are gorgeous!
