I live in Milan, Italy. Over here we even dress up to go out for a pizza. Italians have mastered style no matter what their age. Your advice is totally on point.
@@40OverFashion You are welcome. People will always judge is by what we wear. I'm 70, still athletic, and still like to wear clothes to impress. I hope more people will take onboard your message.
I’m 66 and in the last 2 years I made a commitment to my self to look better and get in shape. My motivation was a ski trip in the Alps “Chamonix France and Zermatt Switzerland” and boy I never looked back. Started watching your videos and changed my look from short hair to long and grew a beard. Your videos gave me the direction for style. I feel amazing and looking better than I ever have.
im 67 and I look 25-30, all the girls I get are between 18 and 55, yes even 55 year olds are experts under the belt, lucky balling everything in their mouth including Cherrys., the 18 year olds just sit and moan...but none know my real age lol!
Thanks for making this video! As a 50 year old who started improving his style 6 months ago, I’ve been updating my wardrobe through trial and error. While I don’t care what people will think if I dress too young, I also appreciate having someone like yourself to help me avoid future pitfalls.
@@40OverFashion John have you given any more thoughts on Zoom meets For your viewers’ lets face it any fair looking person would tune into A Zoom meet for general well-being ! You are giving great advice.. Unbelievable that advertisers are ignoring us (older with cash to spend on clothes) I'm 62 and had a short career in modelling before there was no interest in older men! 😂 Keep up the great work
I have just turned 60. I have a very active job, I also cycle. I have lost almost 20lb over the last few years. I am in the process of replacing a lot of my wardrobe that doesn’t fit. I find it a little difficult deciding what is smart and age appropriate for my tall athletic build. These clips really help, thanks.
In the last 2 years before becoming 50 I came across men's style and minimalism. Both have helped one reinvent myself and overcome past regrets. Clear out the old things that were no longer me, and bring in a style that makes me feel more like a success.
John just found your channel. Going back into sales next week after a few years. I think your advise is spot on and it reminds me that I need to change a few things to be my best. Also liked your pro tips on how to be more photogenic. Keep up the good work.
John, you know I watch all of your videos and then comment. I believe. "in my opinion" that you are the master on conveying and visually demonstrating how to be at our best. All of what you said rings true and I am grateful of the impact you have had.
John, great advice all around. In my mid 50's and I realized this last year I needed to tighten up my look. I'm glad I was able to find your channel for guys my age. I've started incorporating many of the different things you talked about here over this last year and I really feel better about myself. I even went to a local tailor recently because I'm tired of wearing pants that don't fit right. Thanks again! Keep the good advice coming.
Great advice as always John, keep posting more about older guys style ect. I’ve just turned 61 and I’m still exited about men’s style and grooming.........
I like the clips during the opening music. The opening makes me want to watch. Your music choice and the clips ring what I like to work toward,,, my comfort zone where I feel good, & where I seem to attract the type of females I connect best with. Great channel.
I confess, I will wear a compression shirt underneath my dress shirts and they work! They help take away that “pucker” on the buttons. The down side is they can be warm depending on the material.
@@louiscyfer6944 I’m working at it my friend. Until then, these seem to work for those interested. I injured my back three years ago after a life of very physical employment. At 58, the weight doesn’t come off as easy as it goes on.
I just bought my first pair of Chelsea boots & my first pair of dress boots.. currently transitioning from the way I dressed throughout my 20's- 40's.. buying more shoes, sweaters, slacks, button down shirts, suits & minimalist sneakers to go along with my large dark colored jeans collection, polo shirts & gym sneakers.. about to buy a few top coats.. your channel, along with others, has helped me find my new style now that I'm in my 50's.. thank you
Great advice John, thanks. I would also add teeth, nails and breath. All 3 will leave a positive or negative impression, no in between. Stay safe gents Scott.
I turn 57 in 5 days & subscribed to your channel. I haven’t taken care of myself for 37 years I’ve worn a metro Police uniform non-administrative, retire in 9 months, because I had to put 3 kids through law school. I’ve never bought myself clothes, my mother always bought my clothes, but she passed in 2013, so my mother taught my wife about 3 years before she passed, but my daughter who is a DC attorney is always buying me clothes? I hardly ever go out, so I wear it when she flys home to visit her mother & I. But my wife has been wanting to buy me a wardrobe, I guess I’d better start? I never was a detective only patrol, so the uniforms were always free, and I always wore my uniform boots off duty, so I wouldn’t have to buy my own shoes, but we had three kids to put through college & grad school, so I never spent anything on myself, but did buy my wife whatever she wanted.
@@40OverFashion This is my favorite channel, I finally don’t feel, so awkward wearing clothes that kids in their 20’s wear. I always wore Polo in HS & college, because mother was the district superintendent & tenured chairperson at a university close by, she demanded I wear the clothes she would purchase me, particularly when she traveled to the East & West Coast for public administration lecturing. I truly didn’t know about polo in 1979 when I was a freshman in college, however mother, by default had to be the best dressed, simply because she had 27 professors to administrate & facilitate, as she also had numerous school principals that she also met with each morning from 8-8:30AM each morning via telephone conference. Thus she felt Polo would be a good fit for me, I wore Polo all through H/S & college & graduate school, but I never knew anything about fashion, because I worked my last two years of H/S 1/2 in a school Cooperative program & all through college full-time, at a gigantic ranch working cattle branding, 7-way inoculations, ear tags, roping, herding, loading & transporting in 18-wheelers. All this to pay my college, my folks demanded that I consume every minute of each day academically and/or with my job , so that I could pay my college. However, to this day I never know what to purchase except Polo, but now I’m 57YO since 03/27 & mother passed, so my daughter started to purchase my clothes & is teaching her mother how to choose my clothes, because they both say that I look & dress like an antique since my wife also cuts my hair, so I don’t have to spend on haircuts, I’ve always only used Ivory bar soap for my head also & never have bought myself products until now my daughter is teaching her mother how to purchase these items since I’ll start teaching at a university full-time, directly after retirement.
Thank you John for thr tips. They are important to all of us that were crossed the frontier of sixties. Best wishes, Raphael from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Skin care and grooming make a huge difference. BTW, I’m bald and I love it. I actually had terrible hair. I never liked the way my hair looked. My advice to bald guys is to grow a great beard.
Hey John I'm been watching your videos for quite some time, and help a lot, I'm 58 and with some of your advices I have improve my style life, Thank you.
Definitely moisture every day. Back in 1970 at the age of 20 the only moisturiser I used was Nivea, I’m now 71 and am spoilt with the selection for men today, I Enjoy your channel very much.👍🏻
Started using moisturiser because my skin had dry patches when I first started shaving, used it every day since, I’m now 64 and tho I say it myself my facial skin is in very good condition with very few lines, a happy accident 😊
Another fantastic video. My greatest challenge lately has been to be consistent with my skin care routine. Also grooming my beard is a chore as I want to grow it out a little and shaping it is hard. Have a great week John.
A Navy blazer, smart shirt which is well tailored. Dark denim jeans, slim or tapered fit. Brown/Tan dress boots and even I can’t get that wrong. 🤣. Almost forgot.......UNDERSHIRTS!
Undershirts: That is so American, makes you look fatter than you are. It seems a lot of people in this country, especially women, have a problem with chest hair. Is that the reason?
Great list John😄! I would add that the facemoisturizer should have an spf of at least 30, and to always use sunglasses when sunny! Keep up the good work 😄!
I’m not stuck in the middle. I’ll be 68 this summer and DEFINITELY want to look groomed and sharp. I’m still decent build, 32/33 waist 42 around the chest. For several years now I’m wearing slim fit clothing size med and often times certain brands fit great off the rack. Shirts can be a touch tight on the chest and baggy below the ribs so…a little trip to the tailor fixes that. My point in all of this…I love mixing colours…green top grey bottoms, etc. Dress young with class, poise and character but most of all…mature. I NEVER wear jeans with holes, t’s are worn at home or the gym. Anyway…I feel great when I’m dressed to the t’s.
Great video. However, something you started talking about at around 4:35 as it relates to darker colors making a person look skim or depending where it’s work whether it be a pants or as a shirt in form. I’ve also heard something similar as it relates to wearing lighter colors and how it can make you look as far as light reflecting from a person. Now this is all intriguing to understand as it relates to dressing or how one chooses to dress. And I think these bits of info packaged could make an very interesting insight video.
Love your work my friend. Just wondering if you could do a video on what guys can do with the mid section camouflage when you are now you turned 50 look like sticks now your middle has grown.
John, thanks for all the great tips...they're helping me present myself in the best way I can as I age into decrepitude...in style! p.s. Nice meeting you at Earle & Aimee's wedding last year!!!
Thanks John. I like your channel. Any recommendations on where to buy clothes for guys in their 60s. The clothes you wear look very nice but I can't seem to find them at Macy's or Dillard's. I've looked online and haven't come across anything that I like any advice???
Spot on with the Athletic Fit pants John. I've replaced all my jeans and chinos. I'm 42 with a muscular build. I shopped for months before discovering Athletic Fit pants. Slim tapered wasn't happening. American Eagle and Old Navy Athletic Fit are perfect. I'm 5'9", a lean 195lbs, and 34/32 fits best for me in case anyone is of similar build for sizing. Trust me, get some. It'll up your style game. These with nice leather sneakers is a great clean look.
I looked at an old photo of Jean Paul Sartre, if I look that cool in my old age, I'll be happy. The weird thing is he isn't even trying. And that's the secret, don't try too hard, like quality shines through, fashion is always an adjunct to something deeper.
Great video and tips. Very motivational, uplifting. After i started watching this channel i started buying some pairs of dress boots and dark wash jeans.
Great advice! I just discovered this channel today. Definitely going to subscribe!... I turned 40 a few months ago and i need to start dressing my age. Especially now that i'm single and want to attract a woman. I figured that it's time i stop wearing branded hoodies, distressed jeans and baggy shirts, but the problem for me is that it's hard to look my age when i have a baby face and a slim build. I actually want to look 40, not 20 something. I think completely changing the way i dress will be the easiest step to looking more mature and refined, so this channel should help me with that.
Time for you to suit-up. Don't walk into a store, buy online - menswear staff today are trained to serve young people and accordingly will send you out with the wrong fit. Measure yourself a dozen times, if necessary, with at least 2 tape measures, until you get a consistent picture. Hem the trousers yourself, ensuring no scissors are used. Hesitate before altering jacket sleeve lengths, as they need a tailor. Wear brogues; ignore advice suggesting they are too informal for a suit - they're not, and work better with older men.
Thanks John! Great video. Would love see some more content toward/after meeting some goals, next steps. Over the last 18 months I lost 58lbs. Now I am 60 years old 6’2” 175lbs 15.5% Fat. Good news. I feel good! I have had to get a complete new wardrobe. ( Your content has been very helpful with making choices) Bad news, Need more content on tall, slim, 60 plus style 😎 I met my health goals by 1. using a fitness tracker watch. 2. Using an app to track everything I eat. Eating as clean as possible and still not giving up everything 🤙.
I don't really enjoy the clothes shopping experience and tend to be impatient and really only buy nice casual (can go with a sport coat at night) every few years, going to a place like Nordstroms and getting a personal shopper where they bring the clothes to me to try on works well. The sizes tend to be close to perfect fit and I get exposure to different colors and styles and that I might not always consider on my own. It also keeps me away from the "on sale rack" and the styles last until I do it again.
Hi John. Having grown up with and wearing selvedge denim for years I was at first skeptical about stretch denim but now thats pretty much all I wear and you're right about it being comfortable and durable. I almost find it more durable than regular denim though there are differing opinions on that. The only thing I'm not fond go is the fake whiskering that some companies do to jeans. It never seems to line up on me where it should compared to a regular pair of denim that fade and whisker on their own. Also if you want to make those guns more prominent look for shorter sleeves and if the sleeves are a bit floppy have them taken in . Nice dance moves BTW . ; ) Peace. : )
John! Thanks for this great video. I also just finished watching your two part video at Daniel George getting your first bespoke suit (which looked amazing, btw, and was very informative!). I am 59 and so this topic caught my eye. I'll have to dig through your episodes, but would love to see a video on the topic of using a stylist and how to go about doing that. (or better yet, do you hire out? lol) All my best to you!
I got most of the bases covered, here in El Salvador is hard to get men facial care products, which sucks a whole lot. I rely on my folks in the States to get me what I need. Thank you John.
I am more concerned about looking cool without appearing to be trying..now at 58 starting to drive around my 30 year old W124 at casual pace...great channel J
Excellent suggestions. I'm definitely going to re-watch this video as we get closer to summer in Canada. I really like the the outfit you're wearing at 8:56 of the video. What type of fit jeans are you wearing?
Thanks John, Great tips, I'm 62 and I sometimes have doubts about wearing certain colors, especially here in the states, I'm Colombian and we wear any color in latinamerica since the weather is nice most of the time, thanks again. 😊
Having a few pairs of Very good quality and always clean shoes is a great tip as we get older. As with clothing, shoes appropriate for the function and occasion. Although it is mostly zoom meetings lately :-)
One point to be made: Many of us have skin issues. I have dermatitis and psoriasis. Skin care is a very tricky issue for me. Moisturizers can aggravate my dermatitis. One of the best investments you can make is consulting a dermatologist. Even IF you don't have underlying issues, as we age, we become prone to issues like melanoma and the like. Especially, balding men, living in the south.
Hey John. Good to find this video tonight here in uk ... Trust you're doing well and still posting videos for the guys??? Take care and hope to see you soon paula x
As one of your female viewers, may I? Again, John....you're hitting important nails on the head; they can't be preached enough! Respectfully....it's about time (middle aged, older) men realize it shouldn't be just us (middle aged, older) women striving to keep our appearance/fashion sense up?! Just as many aging men (still) will typically prefer a woman (age gap, or age appropriate) to be in shape/hourglass and GL-to-you in face beauty/skin---myself, and many other (aging) women, want the same! People can call it 'shallow' all they want, but then one can't refute the health/skin benefits either----DROP THE EXCESS WEIGHT/GET FIT. Lots of older men out there if you Google it---with flat stomachs, at least, even if no 6 pack?! For you, then it will also likely help you get the partner you want if that's a goal. I still think it's a sign that if a person is taking 'care' of their body (along with mind, and Spirit)---good chance they'll take better care of YOU, as a partner too. Don't forget to whiten your teeth too; yellow teeth 'age' you..... ;)
all these older guys are trying to fix everything with dressing better. get in shape, everything looks good. i am an older man, who says you can't have a six pack.
Leslie, I see what you're talking about often here in Arizona. The older women (especially those in Scottsdale) still look great, paying attention to nails, makeup, hair coloring and hairstyle. But the men with them look as they quit paying attention to how they look the day after they married.
I'm 47 and as soon as i recede a lot with hairline maybe At 50 I'm going for a grade 3 all over with a really short groomed salt and pepper beard. Got my style pre planned with an Italian/French look
Thanks for putting the lead photo of a man with a larger bread. I decided to let my beard grow out in 15. I love sporting a larger man beard. However, I have always like looking fashionable for my age of 59. I'm very conscious about my facial hair and never want to be confused about looking like a homeless man in public. I really enjoy your show and you've helped me to look better than the average man in public. Thx...👍
The point is its about how you "LOOK" not how you "FEEL"! Men of our grandparents generation wore summer suits and ties even in the Mediterranean because they had personal standards of dress they were not going to compromise on, and they prided themselves on looking smart, anyway jeans are dawn hot to wear in summer, chinos are cooler, and shorts are beach wear unless you are 9 years old
Hey man. Love your channel. Real guy at 50 here. Could you do a video on blazers/sportcoats for winter vs summer and coordinating all black summer vs winter? I am updating all my wardrobe. it is way time. thx.
Another tip... Look at actors of a similar age who you identify style-wise with. The wardrobe directors of the films they are in will spend a lot of money getting their style right. They are also likely to have personal stylists. Obviously most of us won't have their money but the way they put together their outfits have often give a few clues as to what looks good on someone your age.
Just found you through your video on tips for IG posts. REALLY enjoying your content, but I'm finding a lot of tips about how to hide your dad bod, and how to hide balding, etc. I'm about your age - 52, but I don't have a dad bod, and I'm not balding. Would love to watch your tips on how to look good when I'm already an avid exerciser, already watching my diet. I don't need to slim my waist line, hide a double chin etc. Just wanna learn more about adult style. Thanks!!!
