Hi Angela...I am a very new novice at free motion quilting.....I must admit I love your swirls....I have drawn them on paper made heaps of sandwiches then it dawned on me you start off basically with a number 6 but not connect the tail then do peak and go back....it works for me.....my swirls are getting much better now that I have that in my head maybe it may work for others as well

I watched your video over and over to memorize your designs but when I actually sat down to do it my hands have mind of their own. Some of my stitches are 1/4” and where it supposed to be curvy turned out with sharp corners. I bursted out in laughter many times. Nevertheless it was fun and I’m going to try again!! Thanks Angela!

I would like to do some of the challenges that are supposed to be on line. But I don't wish to purchase everything else on these pages that say that they are free. When they are not. This makes it very expensive to do much at all. I do like all the tutorial that she does. She makes it look easy, when I know that practise make better, not perfect, but better. I am trying to do my first quilt for my fathers 90th Birthday in may this year. Yes it wont be frilly & very beautiful, but he still is a man who knows exactly what he wants. No person could have grown up with anyone that has guided all 4 of us to succeed the way we all have. So I'm going to do my best to help with that. Only wish I could get some info on, how to practices some of these things that Angela has on her challenges, with out having to purchase everything on line to do it. I have brought a few thing on line from Bluprint, but the free things still cost me postage, when I thought they would be free.

Another very well done video by @AngelaWalters. I find it unfortunate, however that this video is over 13 months old & she hasn't liked or replied to a single comment. They all want you to subscribe but don't bother answering your questions when they get too popular. Sad but true.

Angela thanks for all of your instruction. I have a lot of trouble with the hook but your suggestion of keeping it close to previous stitching really helps. I will be stitching along but with quilt sandwiches instead of the challange quilt as I need to use the quilting in two quilts I am making. A question: if I want to make this swirl larger for an all over pattern on a large quilt, how would you space the swirls if the foot will be too small to use for spacing? Thanks again.

First I love all your quilting videos, they have given me a lot more confidence when machine quilting. But I do have a question. I always worry about both my top and back being perfectly tight when basted, to avoid getting any tucks or pleats. I notice that when you quilt I see the top quite lose, yet I never see any pleats forming on your tops. How do you avoid this?

Cathy--I was thinking the same thing too--nothing gets bunched up. That Angela--she's so talented! I liked the idea of hooked swirls in the border.

she uses iron on batting. It is wonderful. Do not use steam as steam causes the glue to disappear. The nice thing is that if it becomes unstuck because you are moving the quilt sandwich alot you just go and re-iron the sandwich together.

Hi there! I have a problem with swirls: my fmq foot isn't circular! I have a Babylock Jane and, for this machine, they only make oval fmq feet. Any tips on keeping my spacing regular when the edges of the foot are always changing in relation to the last line quilted? Thanks!
@sandyoravec1545

Sewing parts online have different fmq feet to fit your Baby Jane, I just ordered an open foot, bubble and an open foot. Hope this helps you.

Thanks Angela, I love these videos. I'm using a HandiQuilter Avante and find that I make lots of 'oops'. I know that I need to have a lot more practice, but find it difficult to manage the handlebars and see the area that is being quilted. Any pointers for using a long-arm?

Am I just stupid, or I’m confused. Do you have the batting in the quilt after free quilting or do you quilt before you do the free quilting?
@CR0520
@CR0520 5 лет назад
First mark you top, then make the quilt sandwich, backing, batting, top. Baste it, any way you like, Angela uses fusible batting , I like it on small projects, but use safety pins on the big ones. Then do your FMQ as shown. Good luck.
@siscarmichael2949
@siscarmichael2949 6 лет назад
Thank you for your great tutorials. What are you using to keep the quilt sandwich together? I don't see any pins. If your using spray adhesive, what kind? I purchased some from Joann fabrics, but it keeps gumming up my needle.
@sandyoravec1545
@sandyoravec1545 5 лет назад
505 temporary spray, is the one I found that least gums up machine, also keep a little alcohol and wipe off needle occasionally, but find that by time I need to do this I need to change needle anyway. Also have found the less spray used ( just enough to keep contact, not as heavy as when you are spray painting helps too). Have only been doing FMQ about a year or so, still have my ups and downs, but think I am doing better. Practice on material, practice on paper to get the feel of how to move your hands.

Hi Angela! My question is a bit off topic to this particular video but I hope you can help me: I want to replace my needle on my sewing machine but it is not coming out even though I fully unscrewed the needle bar clamp. Any help?
@lynhanna917
@lynhanna917 6 лет назад
are you sure it is the needle bar clamp you are unscrewing? When I unscrew mine the clamp is wiggly, If the clamp is loose get a pair of needle nose pliers and grasp the needle and pull down. It could be that the needle was inserted wrong when it was put in,

Do you have something similar to a stitch regulator or a cruise control on your domestic machine in this video?
@janesublett5272
@janesublett5272 6 лет назад
The foot she is using in the video is actually made for free-motion quilting with rulers. It doesn't have a stitch regulator as such, but requires smooth hand movement to keep stitches more uniform. I use my stitch regulator (BSR) foot on my Bernina for this, but switch to the "ruler foot" when I need to use her rulers. I'm sure she uses it for all free-motion because that ruler foot edge is exactly 1/4 inch from the needle so it's great for keeping stitch lines apart in a uniform distance. The ruler foot is made for every major brand of sewing machine and is adjustable from the bed of the machine so it will glide over quilt sandwiches of any thickness. You'll like it.
@jlefler09
@jlefler09 6 лет назад
Jane Sublett Thank you. I was just trying to understand that she was totally guiding the machine on her own. Her stitches are so uniform, I thought she might have a regulator on her machine to keep her stitches similar. I know she is free forming the designs with her ruler foot. I guess all her practicing makes those stitches so regulated.
