In this video I'll show you my strategy for keeping and breeding a colony of 80 female rats. I'll be able to produce an average of 80 rats per week with this setup. Enjoy!

This is a pretty comlex system. I like the way you strategically planned this out. Any chance you could do a video on how to do something similar for a smaller system that only needs to feed about 20 snakes?

You should cut a tiny hole inside of every Bin to prevent flooding, it wouldn't have to be that big either because the water containers are only 5 gallons

Can you take a look at something called damp raid, it's basically a charcoal air filter but passive. It's got some powder that I think is calcium suspended above water, and some of the powder combines with gunk in the air and turns the water black. I've had it in my bathroom for as long as I can remember. The containers are like $10 but the refill containers are like $7, which should last I think a dozen refills. In my case the last two to four months and they do not smell afterwards. Can you try them in your rodent room, thinking of getting another one for the mice I don't have yet

Do you have any advice for someone trying to selectively breed for longer living mice with more resistance to diseases? obviously I'm not going to infect them with diseases and keep the ones that live, mainly I'm going to research important traits on the subject. and it will breed all of them but by that some of the adults have surpassed average lifespan I will select their children as breeders.
@ChrisHardwickanimaladventures

I usually feed off my mice when they get to be about 8 months old. I think they will live about twice that long but after 8 months they are not very productive.
@ryanwakebradtelle8682

You could have retired mother bins, as an alternative to feeding them you could separate litters if they get above the ratio, 3-4/25. That way you could take all of the younger letters out and give them to the retired mothers

Most first or second litter moms may eat their young, just give them a chance. It also helps to keep the hoppers away from baby mice, and try keeping other food snacks in there with the mice to give them something special to eat.

Why don't you breed 25% more pinkies than you'll ever need and get used to euthanizing them if you have extra? I mean you probably euthanize them before you feed anyway right, I'm not sure if there's any negative effects defeating live all I know is some people start off feeding alive and then transition to euthanizing

Why do you have male tubs, when you could have more female tubs and rotate the males between all of the tubs.
@ryanwakebradtelle8682
@ryanwakebradtelle8682 5 лет назад
I mean you could just transport to tubs, that would solve most of the problems. But I think it would be easier to transport a singular male over several groups of surrogate mothers
@ChrisHardwickanimaladventures
@ChrisHardwickanimaladventures 5 лет назад
I have male tubs because I want the males to grow up a bit so they become medium rats for my large ball pythons. And I don't want them pregnant when I feed them off. My big males I feed to my reticulated pythons, they get bigger than the females.

The hard part is coming up with about 300-500 rodents every month to feed my snakes, all of various sizes. I need 100+ pinkies for my hatchlings, about 30 smalls for my growouts, 20 medium for my breeder ball pythons, and 8-10 extra large for my retics. The organization is a bit challenging.

Do you bring in new rats/new genes or are they basically all inbred? I’ve heard that most of the big production operations out there are mostly brothers mating with sisters etc. Guess it doesn’t matter if they’re all snake food but I’d think it would eventually affect litter size and overall health.
@ChrisHardwickanimaladventures
@ChrisHardwickanimaladventures 5 лет назад
I actually started with six rats. Funny you mention it, I actually found a rat that was missing a back leg, first genetic defect I've ever seen in all my tens of thousands of rats. I actually think I have so many different colors and patterns that it mixes it up just fine, I have black and white hooded, grey and white hooded, white albino, blacks, and solid greys. The funny thing is that all of those came from those six original rats, kind of weird.
@a.g.1605

Cool. I have 12 reptiles(11 snakes and a Tegu) and I’ve decided to go ahead and start breeding my own feeders. So starting with 4 rats(1 male and 3 females) and just letting them inbreed would be okay? Makes it a lot easier actually
@emmakg9
@emmakg9 5 лет назад
Rats are different to humans in that regards. If can take over 20 generations of straight inbreeding for rats to begin seeing potential genetic defects for inbreeding. The biggest factor for the rats' health genetically would be the first initial pairing.

Actually I moved the rats out because of the rat squeaks in my videos, but I honestly think the rats did better in the warm 80F room. And it seemed like the snakes didn't mind it either way.

Hi Chris, I bought 2 females and 1 male almost a month ago. I cohabited them in a 40 liter tub, and experienced no issues in the first 2 weeks. It turned out, one of the females was pregnant by the time I had them, and gave birth to only one baby, which is probably the reason she showed no sign of pregnancy. I separated the male to avoid it from cannibalizing the baby and left the 2 females together. Then I found out that the other female is also pregnant. However today, almost 2 weeks after the baby was born, the pregnant female started to show aggression and attacked the other female as well as her baby. Is that normal? I already separated the pregnant female, but is that the right thing to do?
@ChrisHardwickanimaladventures
@ChrisHardwickanimaladventures 5 лет назад
It actually works best if you can put the rats together as juveniles or use litter mates so they grow up together, that pretty much will eliminate most aggression. Whatever you do, don't put a mature male in with a female when she has babies, that was the worst fighting I've ever seen. Most times it depends on the rats, if they fight it's best to separate them. After you take away the weaned babies keep the female alone for a week or two before putting the male back in.

I used to have a 50 gallon tank with a divider. I took 1 male to 3 females. Ones they're pregnant I take the male out. Then when they're weaned you take the weaned rats put them to the other side to grow them out then put the male back in with the ladies
@roselynn5752
@roselynn5752 3 года назад
@@ginganinja9135 I would not let them breed continuously after each litter. You should let them have a break. If you breed them all at once you can have a lot of food but if you over breed then you will have too many rats/mice.

hi chris, what happens after the 4 breeder female got pregnant in a single tub? do you separate the females or keep all females in the same tub to nurse their liiters?
@ChrisHardwickanimaladventures
@ChrisHardwickanimaladventures 4 года назад
You can keep them all together but you have to thin out the baby rats by feeding them off or euthanizing and freezing, just make sure the tub doesn't get over crowded. I usually leave a few babies in there so they can raise them to weaning age, then I move them to grow out tubs. It also helps the mom rats if you don't take all the babies, they can get kind of grumpy if you take them all.

You can feed either rats or mice, just make sure they aren't bigger than the thickest part of the snake. Usually smaller snakes will take mice first, then eventually move over to rats. It's probably best to get them on rats as soon as they will take them so they don't end up being mouse only eaters.

As far as i know... rats can't get pregnant anytime... they had the chance to get pregnant 1-2 days every week.... so... not much sense to try getting the rat births classified by weeks.... because it will not happen...One of the rats could get pregnant on Monday and the others after 5-6 days....and if 3 of them have the same days for getting pregnant the male would be only able to do one of the females or max 2 females per day as the sperm it's not good enough sometimes. With 80 females you should be able to get about 450-600 rats a month with an average of just 6-7 pinkies per birth. At the moment you are producing 80 times 4 = 320 rats a month..... why do you need so many racks.... with half of it you would be able to produce this numbers anyway...
