Tip#6- use white or light colored containers or paint them so the roots don't bake in the Sun.

Thanks for all the info Richard. I just started growing dragon fruit early this year. I was blessed with already harvesting some fruit. Just one question, why are there a lot of roots breaking through the top of the soil? And roots are also coming out of the stalk and grabbing onto the trellis.

Our dragon fruit grow lots of roots. It spreads out of the bucket. The trellis couldn't hold, it fell. The roots holds the broken trellis.

Just starting with Dragon Fruit. Couldn't find the concrete anchors I needed in Hawaii so really liked your video using wood. For soil, our options are more limited in Hawaii. Could I use a cactus soil and mix it with compost and maybe some Miracle Grow potting soil that has moisture control? Appreciate all help.

@@FullmoonEffects89 No,if you are talking about cuttings they can be trimmed and re rooted to establish a new plant. Make sure to see Richards video on how to prepare cuttings before rooting. you have to trim the bottom to expose the center(core) then let it dry out before planting again.

It almost seems that you are (perhaps unintentionally) offering a very good reason for planting directly in-ground rather than in pots. If the roots are going to eventually spread into the surrounding soil anyway, you’ve now lost the advantage of mobility with your pots. Once they’re permanently in place, what’s the advantage of the pot? I realize that pots are still an excellent option for those with limited or no ground space to plant, but perhaps in-ground planting should be more seriously considered for those who do have the space. Just a thought…
@GraftingDragonFruit
@GraftingDragonFruit 8 месяцев назад
Planting in ground will always be best for amazing growth and that’s true for any plants. The only reason I haven’t done it is because I had been renting homes the past few years and needed to stay mobile. I still need to stay mobile for awhile longer, but when I have everything set up, will start planting a section into the ground
@robertc5387
@robertc5387 8 месяцев назад
@@GraftingDragonFruit That certainly makes sense - thanks for the reply. I’ve propagated a number of potted trees over the years, and can always tell when the roots have crept into the ground due to the sudden increase in healthy, vigorous growth. Unfortunately, most of us gardeners never have enough land to grow as much as we’d like, so we settle for containers. I certainly agree with you that the best and healthiest plants are usually the ones planted in the ground (assuming that the native soil, climate, and location are conducive to the plant being grown). Thanks for the great videos, I continue to learn a lot from them.

I wouldn't pick at it. I just squeeze the pot from all the sides . That way it cracks open the soil and then i use my hands to open it up afterwards on the top very carefully of course.

And as I told you In one of your live streams use an olla to water the plants. There's no possible chance of root rot even when it rains because the water in the olla only sweat water around it when the soil is dry hence no root rot

I see no reason to add any organic matter to the potting mix if you're going to be fertilizing with organic fertilizer every two weeks. Just use a mix that won't compress or sink that has lots of gaps for air amd root growth and fertilize every two weeks.
@peetmoss3521

@tinyjungle_

@peetmoss3521 I dont fertilize. Im commenting about the video. He said fertilize every 2 weeks. I said if you do that, it's virtually pointless to have organic matter in your mix.
