Before every season, I wax my rods and the surfaces of my reels with a high quality carnuba automobile wax. I make sure to get in real good around the guide feet with a q-tip. Not only does this make them shine like new, it helps them shed the saltwater immediately, and helps make cleanup easier at the end of the trip. At the end of the trip, I clean them with a salt neutralizing product like Saltaway. And then I service the reels with new grease and corrosion-X lube where needed.
Hi peter Love the channel brilliant and very informative!! I’m going to be traveling to Mauritius in early September this year and will be taking a budget 9wt fly rod and thinking of partnering it with the Rio elite permit 9wt fly line can you advise if this is a good idea with a budget fly rod please? Species of fish not really sure as this would be my first salt water fly 0:01 experience and off the cuff to , Species possibly if I’m lucky permit , Bonefish ect Also not sure what tapered leader to use possibly the Rio’s ? I will be hoping getting my hands on some of your favourite bone fish flys shown on your earlier episodes Kindest regards Dave Lloyd
Hi David, thanks for commenting and yes, that will work.. make sure you get plenty of tippet material as well.. of the beach in Mauritius will most likely be small pompano and bluefin trevally which will be fine!
Thank you Peter I also purchased the Hardy zane fly reel in 9# to complement my 9# rod Thank you very much again for your great advise !! Kindest regards Dave Lloyd
Hey Peter. Love your stuff!! Just a little confused about whether you rinse off the soapy water before drying or just let everything dry without a rinse. Also would love to know if you have any tips about keeping ferrules clean and able to remain snug without sticking too tight. I have heard that rubbing male part with candle or beeswax can be helpful. Thanks.
Rinsing the soapy water off should be a give'n. See him put the reels back in the fresh un soapy water to rinse in the vid. (bucket on your right ) I would rinse them with a low pressure hose also. Take it the shower with you or just to clean with a warm mild soap. By some cheap/or good micro fiber towels to wash & dry them with. I purchase them from the auto parts store in 10-12 packs when they are on sale. I use them on my photography equipment also. ( not the lens glass thow! }
30 years of intense fly fishing. 3000 days of fly fishing roughly 500 fishing trips all around the world in freshwater as well as saltwater. i have to admit, all yours videos are very good . Nice job buddy ! i'm not agree with your way to promote Hardy non stop. To much "commercial" is not efficient. They are better brands for reels and rods. Such as Abel &Tibor and Thomas &Thomas, Scott and Winston. All those rods make a little bit better craftsmanship than most of your rods even your "Cintrix 440" or your HBX. About reels ! Tibor & Abel are far much better than any others brands. Dont make me wrong ! Hardy is a lovely company and try to come back on the edge. Congrat for that ....and keep going on your guiding business.
Everybody, & not just fishing/fly fishing ( automotive, photography, etc. ) promotes their brands. Actually, I would like to see reviews from people who use the equipment that are not affiliated with the brand they are using. Hard to find. Someone like you who has been out there & around the sport & probably around other people in the sport & possibly have seen a lot of different brands equipment used out there. I have heard Abel was real good from a few people in a Saltwater fly fishing club I belonged to at one time. I would probably purchase Abel if fishing for Tarpon, GT's, Roosters or, big Jacks because their drag systems could possibly stop a truck. Surprised you didn't mention G-Loomis!
Thanks for the comment, happy to learn from others with differing opinions, please can you explain why you think this is bad advice? Constructive criticism is always great fully received….
