My dad is an owner operator running local, dry van. He has several dedicated runs and the longest drive is maybe 45min. He worked 4 days this week and his two checks cashed totalled $4,795. That's before using his box truck to find pallets every now and then or from people he buys from. He averages 400 a week in fuel in a 2000 fld day cab. It's totally possible to make great money. 20yrs later he finally convinced me. Passed my permit 3 days ago.

When getting a CDL with an employer, take ALL THE TESTS (tanker, doubles, hazmat, passenger, etc and do the hazmat background check EVEN IF the company you are hiring to only requires the base CDL.... An applicant that already has all the licensing is much more likely to get hired than one who doesn't for that next job...

Don't forget to go for your passport and your twic card. A lot of companies will reimburse even if you never take a Canada or Mexico load or pull from a yard requiring twic. A lot of the well paying local jobs are port jobs in the northeast and South West. Plenty of good cross border loads too! I love seeing stories like this because I've made considerably more in my trucking career local and regional( weekends home) than I ever have working otr. And you don't need to do the time like old timers tell you. You can get local jobs with little to no experience across the US. It's hard to find in some areas, some may not pay as well but, they're out there!

In 2006 I went to CDL school. My CDL school was a 4 week independent school paid for by the state of Alabama because the company I was working for laid off over 50 of us. I started putting out resumes after the 2nd week of CDL school. 1 week after graduation and over 100 resumes I was in a truck making $36,000 a year home every night. In 3 months my probation was up and I got a raise. At 6 months I got another raise. At 1 year I got a raise and 1 week paid vacation. At 2 years I got another raise and a second week paid vacation. This was all from a small 7 driver company that treated me right. That was what I needed. Around here you have to have 2 years exp. to get contracts and leases.

Just my opinion but I'd rather not put all that emissions crap on that 2008 Cat and go as far as taking the twin turbos off and putting a single on it to make it super reliable and load all my stuff in the back of it and leave California before I crushed it to get a new unreliable truck that's going to cost me a ton of money to maintain. I live in Idaho with a low cost of living and pull belly dumps in the summer and flatbed in the winter locally and I gross around $7K-$8K per week and net around $6K per week and home every night. I have a buddy that said the best person and business decision he's ever made was leaving California. He said he grosses about the same money but his net is about 20% more and his money goes 50% further.
