Get rid of that factory truck bed and install a flat bed. That allows you to haul 4 full size pallets in one trip. Less bed damage from loading and easy to side load. Easy to tarp. Mo money.

I want tires like yours!!! LOL anyway, i have a G56 with 3.73's so it's geared pretty low. I wanna put the biggest tire i can on my stock rims without spacers. @CPSteveMiller
@CPSteveMiller 3 года назад
Spacers aren't a big deal. I recommend getting a set of 2" hub centric ones for 285 70 17 and 315 70 17. There isn't really a big size you can get away with without spacers. Skinny tires are harder to find. I'd get on the forums and see what they say. You're limited to maybe a 32" tire without spacers

Great video...i was wondering if your profit margin is between 30 and 50 percent..would that be considered decent? Is that a common margin for power only?
@CPSteveMiller
@CPSteveMiller 3 года назад
Profit margin depends on what you run truck wise, insurance, overhead expenses, dispatch percentage, lease on percentage, own your own authority, etc.. My bills and overhead come out to 77cpm and the truck's fuel and maintenance is 34cpm. If I make 4k in a week I can usually keep around 2k of it. If I make 6k I can keep around 3500 give or take. Just depends on the week. Everybody does their finances differently. I don't take a paycheck. I pay my bills and put the rest aside

What is a couple average mpg running power only that is possibly expected. so i realize car hauling is something like 8, rough guess. But for power only i am unsure, obviously gonna be different deadhead miles every week ect. But did you have a couple mpg for power numbers you can throw my way. .. maybe a couple different weekly mpg averages or something. you had in past.
@CPSteveMiller

Most Flatbed's are NOT making 6, 7, or 8K a week. Yes, some do but most do not, so lets get that straight now. As n O/O running under someone else's authority, finding your own loads, $5K is the goal per week but you have to work for that. Even if you have a dispatcher, your goal is $5K a week gross. Again, very few make over that and even fewer will make beyond that.
@CPSteveMiller
@CPSteveMiller 2 года назад
5k a week is always the goal. I see a lot of flatbed guys consistently doing 7k a week though. Power only I could see 4k consistently a week and some weeks 5k. With my 3 car hauler and the route I run I'm happy at 4500 a week minimal. I do pa to Florida and back and stay home. Everybody is different. Hotshot beneii covers the flatbed stuff. Dude is definitely doing more than 5k a week every week. I do 6 days out and 3 to 4 home

I pay cash for all that. There's no need for dental and vision insurance. Glasses are 600 bucks every other year and the 2 times I go to the dentist a year is 300 bucks. Much less than insurance. Retirement is up to the individual. There are insurance providers for 1099 contractors and business owners. It's all simple stuff just takes a little bit of looking into. So with all the overhead, don't you write a lot of that off at the end of the year? I mean, you can write off almost everything outside of your truck note, right? And you don't have your own trailers, you just pull other people's stuff, correct? You mention not staying in hotels, but you can write that off with a daily per diem. Just thinking about getting into this industry, but I want all the info first.

Who covers the costs of trailer tire blowouts, especially if there is no spare?
@CPSteveMiller
@CPSteveMiller 3 года назад
Customers are 100% responsible for tires, axles, and wheel bearings. It is up to the driver to make a good decision at pickup though. Always make sure they're properly inflated. If there's dry rot you gotta make the customer aware. They are made aware of tires, axles, and bearings when the job is taken that way they aren't surprised by it.

i know you said 7 was the worst i can imagine hauling a brick would be bad. I look into everything everyday .Hoping to get my own truck right away, but wont be able to get a trailer. I think power only is what i will be starting out with. I drove a semi for years so i somewhat know what to expect. Trying to crunch numbers is a guessing game. I was just hoping the fuel mpg would be greater than 8. I know the hauls dictate it. I never pulled an RV so i just plain don't know. I know 50cpm fuel cost would be rough af. I think cali is over 4 bucks maybe 5 bucks a gallon right now.

@CPSteveMiller
@CPSteveMiller 2 года назад
I don't remember what my expenses were but I was consistently doing 4k a week, not a month. I worked 3 weeks a month and took a week off. Average revenue was about 12k a month on average. Now everything changed and I'm running a 3 car trailer and am home daily making the same 4k a week. There's a lot more money on the table if you wanted to be out longer but I'd rather sleep in my own bed.

Wouldn't a CAI also help with mpg? You mentioned tires and types of loads to help with mpg but discouraged aftermarket air intake.
@CPSteveMiller
@CPSteveMiller 2 года назад
Most will hurt mileage because they put the filter in the engine bay to suck in hot air. A clean maintained stock paper filter will do wonders over a lot of aftermarket intakes. If you want one go with an s&b or banks because they are actually designed to take in cold air from outside just like the factory intake does

Does it have to be a diesel pickup truck?
@CPSteveMiller
@CPSteveMiller 2 года назад
Yes, gas trucks don't live well in this industry. Bad fuel mileage, they don't last half as long, no torque. It's not worth it. An older diesel is the way to go to avoid the newer diesel emissions problems
@THATNI99AJOHN
@THATNI99AJOHN 2 года назад
Look for a older diesel , something like a older 5.9 Cummins or even 7.3 power stroke . Be surprised on the deals you can find , if you want to avoid the dpf emissions don’t go above stay below a 2012 truck .

But here they are still posting and making it. Thank you for you advice. But I think hotshot still there all depends how you manage you business. And when is your business you. An slow down or push it hard for few weeks and come home. HOT SHOT STILL GOOD just be wise we're you go
