when I think that back in the 80s we trashed our toys just because we weren't able to replace or make a new replacement spring . hey !! I remember cassettes players door too , when the spring was damaged you had to manually open it

I believe you have done that a time or too. Always been fascinated with springs. Perhaps I was a spring maker like yourself, in another life. Liked your spring Turner as well. Thanks
@thespringguy1
@thespringguy1 3 года назад
You are welcome Clyde , The turner is just the top end of a pedestal drill and where the belt pulley was - now is a handle. Hint: Study the wire catch , it is hand made with the same dia wire and coiled the same direction as the springs, so coil it first on a smaller mandrel and force it over the mandrel you use to make the springs.

It would be nice to learn what wire is required for that, and could you, e.g. «temper» or «harden» a soft wire to make it springworthy, and should it be before or after the bending. Thank you.

Would have been nice to see how you made the catch wire to hold stock in place. Nice setup. I have a bench grinder with Chuck at one end.Think I'll add a handle to the stone grinder side and it will double as my new wire bending tool...Thanks!

Thank you for such a great and non-frightening video! Others make it seem you need a full pro workshop. I only need to make small springs, 1/8" - 1/4" diameter. What diameter piano wires should I use for each? One last thing, how do I finish the spring? You mentioned heat treating. What temperature and for how long? I read that piano wire is 'stress relieved' at 260℃ for 30 minutes. Is that correct?
@thespringguy1
@thespringguy1 Год назад
Hi , such small springs would use 0.5mm to 0.7mm dia music wire . Your heat treat method is good 👍

1. U must put ur hand behind the spring to get ur camera focused onto the spring u just made! Or put the spring on a clean sheet of white paper 2. Can see the most important part of this video: The hook jig to start coiling a wire. 3. Just buy an appropriate diameter/gauge piano wire for the raw mat'l

Hello thespringguy1, rcasprings I need your help: Can you make a video about making a really strong spring, like 1000N that is spiralled in on itself? Like a snail? Or like the springs in a vacuum cleaner that are used to roll up the cable but a lot stronger?
@jonabub
@jonabub 3 года назад
And is it possible to make springs retract in nonlinear resistance? So that the most force would be released towards the end?
@thespringguy1
@thespringguy1 3 года назад
Thankyou for the question , a constant force spring is what i believe you are asking about.typically made using radial edge annealed flat spring material coiled either Over itself on a mandrel or deflected coiling on a cnc machine then its off to the heat treaters for tempering into full spring strength.
@jonabub
@jonabub 3 года назад
@@thespringguy1 I think that's close to it, yes. I was hoping it could be made with more torque towards the ende of its release. But this helped me already. Thank you very much.

Do you sell the mandrels and also the spring that holds the wire as it is formed on the mandrel? I can make the machine with an old drill chuck no problem. I’m looking to do 1 mm wire around a 6mm or so mandrel.
@thespringguy1
@thespringguy1 3 года назад
Thanks for the question , in the future I will do a vid on making the wire catch coils . Yes you can do with any round bar or even old drill bits for short springs. the wire catch spring is hand made on a smaller mandrel , then heat treated and later forced over your using mandrell. I have just posted a vid using 1mm wire on an 8mm mandrell for double torsion spring. The wire catch coil seen used at the start would have been made on a 7mm mandrell , then heat treated for strength, then forced over the 8mm mandrell bar.

Yo spring guy, you ever wonder why its still smithing and not a formal trade? Its in hope that after the first 20 years of learning and honing the skill that most would understand that just the air temp, humidity, wire temp and mandrel speed change everything not to mention the endless pages of heat treating formula that we pride ouselves on not having to refer to.. do a love job or charge beer rate for a month but ffs Guy lets try to keep the backyard amputations to a minimum and not give "usefull info" to some joker with a Milwaukee
