In this video I make an old WW2 era Kinfolks butcher knife into a bushcraft knife. The project took an afternoon to make with some simple hand tools. The only power tool I used was an angle grinder. The rest of the work was done with a file, sandpaper, gorilla glue and some elbow grease.

Nice, it is alot easier to reprofile an old blade than make one from scratch.

That turned out great Jess! I do something similar on my handle wraps, but do it in a series of half hitches. You get a slightly raised spiral going up the handle, plus each wrap stays snug. Kin folks seems to have used good steel too, I have a funky knife/hatchet combo from Kinfolks. Just a basic, blocky handle and a locking mechanism on the butt to release the knife blade, or hatchet from the handle and exchange one for the other. They both take a fantastic edge and seem to hold it very well. The sheath is interesting...left handed, and shaped much like Thor's hammer (traditional, not comic book). The hatchet slides down the back and has a flap cover over it, with the knife blade in the handle mounted to the front with a single snap strap for retention. I use them, though admittedly I tend to baby them as the tangs are slim and not likely to put up with too much flexing.

Sean Lewis Thanks Sean! I know the set you are speaking of. Very cool! Cool idea on the wrap with hitches, too.

Very nice! Were you able to keep the original stamp? How does that combat wrap feel? I would hate to have those hands mad at me😂😱

Forgecraft is another historical brand of butcher knife and look identical to the Old Hickory. They have a positive reputation but eventually discontinued production in the late sixties. The story goes is that they were made from discarded saw blades. I get the idea from reading forums that the Forgecraft is considered better knife over Ole-Hicks. I have a few Forgecrafts to compare to Ontario Ole-Hicks and would agree. Ya gotta look close at the stamp or you will think its an old-Hick, one of the older and better OH's.
