Thank you so much for posting this. We had an absolutely devastating loss in our family. Our guinea pigs are in a large c&c cage and behind a locked door so that our cats and dog can never go into the room. Somehow the door wasn't properly latched and our dog ran in grabbed one of our pigs. I'm so traumatized that I can hardly write it. But after watching this video and creating a safe lid, putting child protective locks on the door and a baby gate, I finally feel secure that our three piggies safe. My heart is forever broken by what happened but I know they are safe now. Thank you.

I use 2 Rubbermaid closet shelves zip tied together as a hinge, then I have a dollar store foam triangle iPad holder laid on top as a stop to keep the lid from folding all the way back. Works great and it was a good weight to it so they can’t push it open.

Check Home Depot for "cable cuff"s. They come in different sizes, and the small ones work for locking C&C cage doors. It would work for your top quite well. They're used for cable management.

I have a dog but I really want guinea pigs. Do you think this would effectively dog proof the enclosure. I am worried about him scary guinea pigs with his barking but does anyone know if guinea pigs will be ok with him barking. He isn't a massive barker but when he heres someone at the front door he barks really loud.

This video was posted a while ago, but what would happen if my cat jumps on top? I don’t want it to fall in under the weight of her and possibly harm my piggy

Currently my kavee cage c&c cage top is put together by those round plastic pieces. My cats actually climbed on top of it, and made it fall, and some of those plastic pieces fell off. So until I can find time to take the whole cage apart and zip tie the whole thing to bypass the plastic pieces, the piggies stay in another cage in my daughters room at night. The cats are out at night and hide/sleep during the day. So that’s the way it is. I love my cats but I love my piggies too. And I am not gonna let the cats hurt them. So if that doesn’t work I’ll just go back to having the cage in another room.

They have the key chains that clip. They are higher 2.97 Or there is a 2 pack of Hitch pin clips for 70 cents. It’s not what I thought originally but probably will work. : )

Piggy Smalls' name should have been Houdini!!!! I have a Houdini Girl and Houdini Boy! Given the chance, both of my Houdinis' used to, when they were younger, would escape from their pens, if they had run out of grass!!. They would always stayed close to their pens. Thank God!!

Also, I was looking on the guinea pig cage store and realized that they sell these covers for $150 and I’m like..... 😣😣😣 at the time I couldn’t piece together how to make one myself, and now I’m kicking myself for not thinking of this method sooner because it’s so simple lol and most of all: free!

Love Piggy Smalls face! He looks like a black and white cookie! We have cats/dogs/rabbits/chinchilla's and the boars would be out of their cage and in with the girls if we didn't have a top. Husband made a top like you made. When it's open though, those pigs are out and looking in the girls cage trying to get in.

We’ve never had a problem with piggies jumping out. Ours will run from anywhere in the house and wait patiently (or not so much) to be put back in their cage. Except for dear departed Princess who wouldn’t wait and would jump into her cage and scare me to death. There is something about Mr. Piggy Smalls. I think it’s his domino mask. He probably wants to return to his lair beneath the opera house and you are preventing him.

That grid lid you made should work well at keeping piggy in.. I use a mesh fabric lid from piggy bedspreads.com to keep my cat from getting to curious when I'm at work.. It's worked so far!! Great idea!!

Man glad I don't need a top. Would be difficult with my 4×3 cage with 1×2 second level.

super idea!!! I have one of the cages that are built with a divider if you wish to use it. it came with a cover very much like your creation. during the day when someone is always at home and awake I leave it off so I can reach in and pet one of my guys when I walk past. my cage is behind my couch than creates a divider between my family room and dinning room. my kitties love to sleep on the back of the couch and even lay there watching the pigs . the piggies love to lay by my big kitty. she is a Calico Tortie mix and my two baby boys look just like her. same color and markings. I think she sees them as her kittens lol. of course we are very vigilant and only let them be together if one of us are sitting right next to them. when we do leave, even for a run to the mail box we cover and lock them so there is no temptation to test the boundaries from either side. . we have 4 boys. two are grown and two are about 10 weeks old. each of the grown ones chose one of the babies. they just love them and take such great care of them. we also have two females that live in another room. my family never had a piggie and we have just totally fallen in love with these sweet animals. when you come in my home you see each person sitting with a pig on a cozy pad in our laps. even my hubby that said no to the idea of getting one much less 6!!! so se now have two cats, 5 parakeets, two geckos, 6 piggies . more animals than humans in our home!

I was going to comment about a lid I just didn't know how to explain how I built it. I have an extra grid at the spot where the corners meet I n the middle. I also use binder clips on the front edge. PVC pipe with slits cut into it works well as a way to keep the lid open and not crashing down on your head when cleaning.

Piggy Smalls is a legend in his own time! Haha that’s hilarious!! The chirping. What is their reason for that? I have one boy that has done that twice. The first time we thought a squirrel was in the house cornered by our cat. But then I realized it was one of my boys. I just never learned which one. I have three and it started after I realized two were not getting along with another and I separated the third.

What a rascal; good thing he wasn't on the top level! The clips like Nate and snoop have make the best way to easily open it to feed and clean. Good luck with that fella.

Large binder clips may work great, and they allow for quick, easy access into the cage. Piggie Smalls is pretty brave..that was impressive to watch! Ugh, I wish I had the money for a jade necklace right now!! 😭

THAT was really cute and funny, how he escaped! I always knew that they could do that, it's only natural, especially when they're very young still, they're athletic, and very active. The cover is excellent to help keep him in. However, as for cats or dogs getting in, the material is still very light weight , they can still get through. I have Labradors, and I have cats too, I wouldn't keep them anywhere near my piggies. But your idea is a very good one to keep this lil ' rascal inside his cage. :D Great job as always Scotty!

Could also add higher inside walls with plexiglass so that there is nothing for him to grab on to climb and he can still see out, just a thought for those who don't want to cover the top ;) I use higher walls with my coroplast, my piggies like to kick out poop :P

Oh my gosh, you actually caught him climbing on camera! What a little brat! 😂 Good thing you don't have any ladies on the floor, anymore. Yikes. 😐 I've never heard of piggies getting out of C&C cages, or even shorter cages. They most often just don't even bother trying. Crafty little adorable Houdini. 🤨

I have an escapee piggy as well. I made the same lid for my cage lol!
