I added a walnut dispenser to make it more practical as you suggested.

I would put some space between the LCD screen and the surface of the overhead projector for airflow and heat dissipation. If that LCD screen gets too hot, it will be ruined. It might not be a bad idea to add a few fans to get some air moving across that thing, too.

ive got an old projector, but my worry is that i would have to have the lcd mounted higher off of the platform or the heat from the bulb could kill it.

or just get a Cheap Projector

The image seems very blurry and dim and you need to have an overhead projector as well. I nabbed an older Epson 1024x768 projector for 60 bucks that produces a surprisingly good image. This is not worth the work, time or money.

I remember my work had an LCD screen in a housing that could be attached to a desktop computer. You set the housing on an OverHead Projector (OHP). It was VGA resolution but that was 16 years ago... I look at it now and I laugh. This is a pretty cool project, dude, kudos to you.

You can get a cheap projector for 40 bucks. What's the point of buying an old projector for 30 and then tearing a laptop apart to make this bulky monstrosity?

I see so many comments crapping on this video. But those people are so small minded. The projector may be "old tech" but the physical aspects of it ie. the mirrors, theories and lenses can be used well into the future. This "old tech" does not have the bottle necks of "new tech". New tech has so many custom and specialized pieces that they rarely can be feasibly upgraded. Mirrors replicate whatever you input, 720p, 1080p, 4k, 6k, 8k, 10k. Your $50 320x480 projector will always be 480p.

Those computers are worth a good chunk of money and is still very useful like playing older computer games.

What if you used LED lighting instead of the old bulb in the overhead projector so that it doesn't get hot meaning you can get rid of the fan, and also so it looks less yellow tinted

My idea was to break down the base of the projector, and backlight with a bank of LED's (the lumens match pretty easily) and turn this into a portable display I can run off of batteries. This was a really clever idea, and I think it's gonna be a lot of fun. I don't see many limits for something like this, it's a genuinely fun DIY-media toy!

I remember back in grade school when I wondered if you could do this, now I know that it's possible. I feel better knowing this for some reason.

I used an LCD from a moniter and drilled some holes in the overhead projector for the VGA port and power to the moniter and also for a better picture replaced the bulb with a 500 led board thanks loads for the video

Hi, instead of the laptop screen, can we do it with an old smartphone screen? will it work?

i used an old lcd screen for it, had to make my own ribon cable to connect the 2 pcb's. after some tinkering it worked you should also make a cooling system for the screen, because the overhead projector can get quite warm

There is a diference between a video projector and a transparent projector (i don't know if you know but it's what a lot of schools used in the 90's). Here he combines a laptop screen with an such old transparent projector to make a home made video projector. I don't know about you but i think it's pressy awesome to use your wall or ceiling as a screen for 30$. Add a nice sound system and you're good for some bed time cinema. You can easely replace the laptop with a raspbery pi and an LVDS/LCD

I remember a looooooooong time ago, when dad brought home from work a overhead projector and a terribly expensive transparent black and white LCD screen that was designed to be used with the projector. It was so cool to play Wolfenstein 3D on a wall. XD
