Hi everyone! In the next video I’m going to show how I made a copper and wood ring. As usually, the materials which I’m using are quite affordable and easy to find: wood shavings, copper pipe and copper wire from any electric cable. Still, this time I used a quite exotic wood; the Caesalpinia Granadillo (a.k.a. Brown Ebony or Guayacan) which is one of the hardest woods on earth, about 20-25% harder than Ebony. There is no doubt it’s a very suitable wood for jewelry. Till now, I've been using the Dremel tool to turn rings which now it’s been set aside for my new lathe which lets me a quicker and precise job.
Finally, I've added a very simple poll at the end of the video in which I’m asking you to choose in between two different projects to be the next one I’ll do. I find this way interesting to interact somehow with my subscribers. I hope you liked and participate.
Don’t forget to subscribe to my channel if you want to be updated of new woodworking projects.

Hey brother. You are a true artist! Not just in what you're creating, but also in your videos - your shots, clip duration and editing all contribute to captivating videos. Keep it up! Thanks for sharing these with us. Would you be willing to share what tools you used for each step? Hi MrLufelcan! That's awesome! I hope you enjoy as you learn. I'm glad to say I'll publish more jewelry videos as soon as I can (jewels made of silver, bras and wood). About your question, yes indeed (CA glue is the one I've used to bond the copper wire with the brown ebony). Regards and good luck!
@caulkdaddy1
@caulkdaddy1 9 лет назад
Matthew. Wow! Beautiful ring. You have motivated me. (Along with countless others I'm sure) couple questions if I may. In the video you can see you spray something on the ring while your buffing it. What did you spray? Also, when you first make the groove in the copper. You make a groove on both sides. Why? I know the groove for one side is to inlay the copper wire but why the groove on the other side?
@WoodworkingBarcelona
@WoodworkingBarcelona 9 лет назад
caulkdaddy1 Sorry, my name is Lluís ;). Thanks to join to my channel; I'm glad you enjoy my projects. Of course, I'll answer to those questions. About that spray, it's just a CA accelerant, to achieve CA glue dry faster. About the second query, I was only shaping the ring to the desired wide. I find this way more precise than sanding it on the belt sander or trying a narrower cut on the scrollsaw. I hope I clarified your questions. Thanks again for your visit and comment caulkdaddy1.

Thanks for the great videos,And all your hard work. The copper ring would I get a green finger?

Thanks for your feedback. I add a CA layer to prevent that but time to time the copper will be exposed and cause green finger by oxidation.

Couple of quick question regarding the CA glue you use. Is there a certain brand that is a go to brand, or does it not really matter? And do you use the thin, medium or thick version? Thanks for another great video, keep up the great work

+Cheninator96 Thanks for coming by and comment. I recommend you to use a good CA glue; I certainly use "Chestnut" brand but I'm sure there are some good other brands out there. In this kind of job I recommend to use the medium one. I hope this helps you. Cheers!

Very nice! I would like to ask what kind of epoxy you are using to glue the wood to the copper?
@WoodworkingBarcelona
@WoodworkingBarcelona 9 лет назад
TheWrathofPoland Hi Wrathof! I used cyanoacrylate glue (also known as CA glue or superglue). It's faster (even more with the accelerator, which you can see I used for this project) and perfect for this job. Remember to answer the poll, please ;). Regards!

what liquid supplies did you use for this? you mentioned a CA glue coating for the copper. did you use a particular oil for the wood, or an adhesive to hold the copper wire in the groove?
@WoodworkingBarcelona
@WoodworkingBarcelona 8 лет назад
+Zachary Hyde During the crafing process of this ring I only used CA glue (for glue and polish). Cheers!

Absolutely love this ring. Can I just ask what kind of glue you used and did you use the same glue to stick the laminate to the copper ring, and then the wire to the wood? you also seemed to add some more to give it it's final shine. Was this the same stuff? many many thanks.

John L Thanks John! I'm glad you enjoy this project. I use always CA glue for all the applications you've mentioned. I hope this will help you. Regards from Barcelona!

Great video! What did he use for the wood shaving?

A block plane. Is like a small hand plane.

In order of appearance in the video, I think his tools are these: Ring sizer and mandrel Scroll saw (I think) Propane torch Ring mandrel and rubber mallet lathe Dremel Hand plane After that, he's just on the lathe with different kinds of sandpaper and micro mesh.

Great video and a beautiful ring!! :) I would like to try to make one for the fun of it, but i have no real tools to speak of. I am wondering weather i could use a drill to spin the ring so i can sand it, at least on the outside. So do you think this project is doable for an amateur with few tools or a hopeless effort?? Cheers!
@WoodworkingBarcelona
@WoodworkingBarcelona 8 лет назад
You could make it with just a Dremel tool. Look at my previous ring projects and you will see what I'm talking about ;). Good luck!

+Woodworking Barcelona So i have come a far way, made the copper base and aquired a Dremel tool but I am having great difficulty with glooing the wood. I have tried 3 different types, two of them never polish properly and have these little cracks in them all over the place, and the third is impossible to carve out it whole pieces and does not glue on properly. Any ideas ??
@WoodworkingBarcelona
@WoodworkingBarcelona 8 лет назад
+Sigurður Jónsson Sigurður, you need a proper wood specie, dense, with tight grain and a well sharpen block plane to obtain a good quality shaving. Focus on that step and I'm sure you'll get better results. Cheers!

I want to make sure I understand... The cutoff from the copper coupling is smaller then what the finished size will be. To enlarge it, it's heated then hammered on ring anvil until you've worked it down to the line you made. Is that correct?
@WoodworkingBarcelona
@WoodworkingBarcelona 9 лет назад
+Mike Lange Is that correct. Cheers!

Cant stop watching this video! You shape the copper to the desired size using the mandrel, correct?
@WoodworkingBarcelona
@WoodworkingBarcelona 9 лет назад
SL33P3R16 Yes, you're right SL. Before shaping remember to soften by heating it till gets a reddish colour, as you've seen on the vid. Avoid to quench it because it makes become harder to shape. I hope this help. Regards!

Others in my workshop say never use a lathe to work on something you've placed on a dowel. It looks like it works just fine for you. Any tips you can share?

+SL Solarz Ive used dowels to hold all kinds of things on my lathe. just make sure you have it snug in your chuck and slide up the live center tail stock to keep it in and straight.
