I show you how to make a cutting board with an inlay. This cutting board has 3 through inlays: one with maple and walnut, one with walnut, and one with padauk. This makes an attractive cutting board or serving tray.
The key point when adding a curved inlay is that it is not running parallel to the grain (or the other pieces) so you have to be sure to make a cut that is the exact same thickness as the piece of wood that will be inlaid. By doing that, you will ensure that the grain and other pieces of wood will still line up after the wood has been inlaid.
I made the initial cuts using a dado bit. One bit was 31/64" thick and the other was 7/32", so I made sure that the wooden inlays were the same thickness. The dado bits are used to cut only part way through, and then I cut the rest of the way through using the band saw. Then I used a flush trim router bit to clean up the cut so that it was smooth. That's all there is to it to get a precise fit. Not really hard, just lot of steps.
