I build a desk with hidden wireless charging. I used woodworking and metalworking on this project with a walnut top and a tube steel welded base. This modern industrial computer desk has a nice simple desk feel but with tons of character including a copper metal bowtie inlay. #wirelesscharging

I am a former high school shop teacher.....and the reason I subscribed, was your honesty to tell and show your mistakes. You make mistakes and you learn from them. There may be times that you need to take a deep breath and calm down. But we have all been there. And the fact you welded your clamp.....don't think the best of us haven't done that!! Be careful grinding down your welds, if the weld has not penetrated deep enough, grinding might just make the weld disappear or be severely weakened.....I think most channels hide the mistakes, and you don't, even with some pro's....your mistakes reminds them that they too always have to think about the next step with safety ALWAYS coming in FIRST.... continue on Son...your doing GREAT!!!

That's also the part i appreciated the most, it's such a rarity to hear someone say [& with confidence!] "do you see me making any mistakes? what am i doing wrong & what could i be doing better" It really demonstrates true intellect cuz it shows someone as not just able to admit fault, but mainly that there willing to learn from their shortcomings, further elevating one's awareness in the subject at hand, rather than one letting their ego control them an taking advice on comments up the butthole. I applaud you for this and hope others will learn from YOU in this regard

This is awesome. I love the bowtie emblem in the surface. Hopefully your charger pad doesn't overheat and is able to last a while within your table! I probably would have cut about 1" of extra hole radius so it at least gets airflow around the sides of it. But if it works, it works.

Hi there, as an architect i like the work you have done, good craftsmanship. And I would like to give a couple of tips for those going to this kind of project. -If you dont want to see the top metal frame you can use a larger top with nich that leg top frame sits into... -Instead of hot gluing the charger and its cable use brackets to hold them in place (in case the charger fails or technology changes) -Consider electrical outlets beneath the wooden top if you are going to use it as a computer desk, basically mount extension cable (long enough to reach the wall outlet) with multiple outlets (preferably with a on-off switch) will help what ever electronics you need to plug in... -And ask people like "Fix this build that" channel for help in the beginning they will direct you on the right equipment and material...

Beautiful desk. Maybe one idea; maybe use velcro to mount the charger and/or something that is not so permanent for routing the cable. Just in case the charger goes bad you can always replace it. Amazing job.

@AdamsLeatherWorks
@AdamsLeatherWorks 5 лет назад
With the thickness of the wood, plus the case, plus the Velcro, the charger may be too far away from the phone at that point. A detachable cover plate with a foam pressure pad (to press the charger against the wood) might be a better option.
@clellbritt3434
@clellbritt3434 5 лет назад
Hot glue is not all that permanent. It can scraped out easily with minimal damage to the wood. Plus its hidden so even if you do damage it slightly you'll never see it.

small tip if you first only tag the inner edges you can still correct the angles than tag the outsides to so you dont really have to clamp it down as hard or if something is to big it will come in hamdy some day.. you can also use a piece of copper and clamp it in with the part you are welding because it wont stick on copper ;)

Bought some metal legs from Amazon and rented a wood router from Home Depot to cut the table for the charger. Bought a few bowtie inlays from Etsy. I'll post a video of the table once its done. What I'd do for that bowtie ( just from the perspective of a guy who fabricates with sheet plastics) get a piece of 1/4 styrene board, and trace the bowtie into it just as you did with the table to make a template, this way if you mess up on the styrene template you'll be able to tell by any presence of lightning the template when you try to fit, if you messed it up... styrenes cheap😅 can try again. Once you have a good fit, use a reverse fluted trim bit to get the majority of it . Just be sure to use that styrene to also make a template of the bowtie, and keep both the inner and outer jig's you've made. Now you have a quick way repeat the process whenever u want. Just use lots of double side tape to hold the jig down, or make it large enough that you can clamp it down without that router getting in the way 😂

The best way to weld this kind of structure is like you did, small squares and then make the entire thig but i recomend you to don`t du full welds in the squares, just make some small "points" of weld, then you can doble check if everything is 90º and if it isn`t good you can just bend it with ease back to square since it`s just a little weld. Making it that way saves you from using some much clamping and in other cases were you need more precision helps to reduce warping soo the metal dosent look like the wood at the start. Sorry for bad english and if you have cuestions i had welding classes on my school (kinda basic but enough), feel free to ask

Cool idea but hot gluing the wireless charger and cable seemed like a bad idea. What happens when the charger or cable needs to be replaced? I think you should have just made something to cover up the channel and hole.
@Nathan-u2g

its not hard to break hot glue
@frankdaiello2449

Also, what are the chances of the charger breaking from it being so well hidden? The most likely thing to break is where u plug it into the outlet which can realistically be soldered back togethwr

The copper is not over the charger. he is lucky he did not place it directly on top of the charger as it would not work with copper on top.

I think you would just rip out the old charger from the wire. Hot glue is a little easier to work with than many other glues. You would just have to cut it out with a razor blade kind of like cutting out silicone.

just wana say that induction heating may occure and the copper might either slow the charging time or heat up or make the board draw to much current u shoulda have not placed it that close o the charger research induction heating and u will get what i am saying thanks

How much would you charge for this desk? Also, do you think you would make a standing desk (roughly 42' inches high) with the same features, and how much would you charge? I would absolutely buy a desk like this. Even without the charging feature, the finished product is beautiful.
