Thank you so much for these videos. I'm taking a ceramics class in College and my instructor is helpful, but doesn't give very many demonstrations. She has told us we need to make dinnerware, but I really didn't know where to start! Thank you for showing such a beautiful piece. Youve given me so many ideas.

I was a sculpture major in college, loved ceramics. I have most of my ceramic studio still here at home but I am working in my studio doing other projects (for work). You have inspired me to pull out the three boxes of moldy clay I still have, think its raku clay? and spend a week just getting muddy. I forgot how much I love it. You are an excellent teacher. Thank you.

I loved watching this but unless you have a kiln to fire the pottery you can’t do it but I loved watching. Kilns are expensive is there an alternative to using a kiln to bake it Would love to have lessons in all this area it’s brilliant. Thank for sharing this video

Hi Jane! I just started learning ceramics and have been throwing on the wheel, but I want to build things without the wheel as well. Can I use the same clay for wheel throwing as for the hand-built items? Thanks!
@JaneScottCeramics
@JaneScottCeramics 2 года назад
Yes you can use the same clay no problem. 👍🏼
@flimflandy
@flimflandy 3 года назад
Thanks for the video and techniques. Does rolling the clay to depth compress it enough to avoid cracking in drying/firing?
@JaneScottCeramics
@JaneScottCeramics 3 года назад
Hi there, yes, i rarely have problems with cracking, clay loves to be compressed as much as possible, this makes its structure stronger so the more you compress it, the stronger it becomes and the less likely it is to crack. Also, its important how you dry the work, plenty of even air flow is ideal, so always place your plate on a slatted wooden surface or something where the base has a bit of air flow around it. This will help to shrink the clay evenly and therefore reduce the risk of cracking a bit more. Good luck with your making!

Dear Jane, thank you for sharing!! How long do you let the slab dry before cutting and forming it? Thank you in advance and warm regards, Ola
@JaneScottCeramics
@JaneScottCeramics 3 года назад
I left my slabs in a cool studio overnight to dry - it really depends on the temperature and air flow in the room... 👍🏼

@@JaneScottCeramics Lucky thing! Thank you
@itzakpoelzig330
@itzakpoelzig330 7 месяцев назад
Warping may come from the clay drying too fast. Try covering it with plastic loosely for a few days so it dries more slowly. And make sure it's fully, fully dry before firing. That's what turned out to be the problem for me. I guess there could be different causes though.
@joaoteixeira8826

Hi Jane, hope everything is going well with you, beginner here, I would like to know how do i paint the bottom of these? Is there any support that you can put the plate when firing so it doesn’t stick or is it better to not put any paint on the bottom?
@JaneScottCeramics
@JaneScottCeramics 3 года назад
Hi there, if you just use slip o the bottom you can just pop it straight on the kiln shelf, if its underglaze underneath it will probably be ok as most underglazes wont stick but definitely f its glaze underneath you need to support your plate with a kiln stilt... best bet is to leave the bottom unglazed - thats what i do, and i enjoy the bare clay base combined with the glaze upper, is feels nice and is easy to fire...! Happy potting 👍🏼

Thank you so very much for this video 😊People say on other videos that we shouldn't eat from an air dry clay plate? Can you tell me is there another step to this such as heating in an oven before you can actually use them for food.
@JaneScottCeramics
@JaneScottCeramics 2 года назад
You need to fire and glaze air drying clay in a kiln to make it food safe - I did a video on the difference in air drying clay and ordinary clay - check it out and it will all make sense. 👍🏼

Genius! Unfortunately, as mine dried, under plastic, it warped so is very wobbly. What to do next time? Weight it down?
@JaneScottCeramics
@JaneScottCeramics 3 года назад
Mmmmm, yes sometimes i pop a round board on top to keep things flat when they dry but for some reason mine stay flat most of the time... dont roll out your clay too thin...? 6.5mm is my standard thickness for this sort of thing... sometimes when its too thin it can curl up a bit... also try drying things on slatted wooden shelves to increase the airflow all around the piece... good luck! ❤️

My plates always warp in the firing. I weigh them down while they dry and try not to bend the slab when making. Perhaps may slab is too thin?
@JaneScottCeramics
@JaneScottCeramics 3 года назад
Mmmmm 🤔 yes thin slabs are more likely to warp... sounds like you are doing all the right things - slow the drying a bit perhaps too?
