Using fabric and tape as a hinge is way simpler than mine, love it!! Realized this after I finished mine. Thanks for the shout out Bob, pretty special coming from you.

Its great when two (or more) great channels do the same project (accidentally, as a collaboration, or even as a competition), it gives us (the viewers) choices and allows us to pick and choose techniques and design; e.g., Tyler's design with Bob's hinges or Bob's design with Tyler's built in fan....Or make a Matthias Wandel designed project with pocket holes (JK) Thumbs up to both videos.

What do you mean "with pocket holes"? I thought his videos were all just how to make pocket holes. Kidding though, his channel is great and he's got an entertaining sense of humor.

Looked great till I saw all that vapor flying out of it when being used at the end. You really need more air flow at the other end of the box with it being so big.

Seems to be a common theme on RU-vid maker channels. “Hey check out this awesome gadget or widget I made” and then they either don’t show it in action, or just show a sped up shot of the device in use and it works like crap. But whatever gets him views amirite?

I once worked for a company that had this dude spraying blue glue inside of a spray booth. All you could see from across the plant was this blue miasma floating in the air. 😷

Been looking to create something like this as well, and I must say this one was really well done. Have you tried it outside yet, and how does it protect from dust in the paint? It has kinda been an issue of ours when doing Gameboy mods, that dust sets in the paint. Also love the way you integrate sponsor ads :) Not obtrusive!
@Iliketomakestuff
@Iliketomakestuff 8 лет назад
Thanks so much! I don't have too much trouble with dust outside here, but you could always hang a drop cloth over the opened side after painting, to keep dust out while it dries. Not sure if the fan would cause a problem there or not.

If you are looking for something quick and dirty, check out the folding cardboard display things you can get at the big box or office stores. They only have 3 sides but if you grab a couple of pieces of poster board, you can just set it on one and lay the other on the top. Best of all, they are really cheap. I think I paid about $5 for one and two sheets of poster board.

Funny Bob, I'm watching this and thinking, didn't Tyler just do this? Good of you to shout out for him. Both are great designs - depend on your situation. One question on yours - how about just using the Gorilla tape without the fabric for the hinges?? Scott

Awesome! I'm a "blind" artisan (legally blind due to being born with glaucoma) and I create decorative plates which I use spray paint for and I had built a portable paint box out of white foam board but I was left out in the weather by accident and well it died after a bit. I used hot glue to connect the foam boards together, using hot glue in the joints it wasn't collapsible/portable. Your build gave me a great project idea. I have melamine and tons of fabric!!! Thx!!!

That just shows that the area without the fan wasn't drawing overspray, which means the fan area IS. The only reason I made it in this configuration was because I needed to paint a sword :) A cube that matched the fan size would be the most efficient for overspray.

A few tricks I learned with jigsaws: 1) Ignore the oscillating setting guidelines (low for metal, high for wood). Set that thing to the minimum amount of flex. 2) Put masking tape where you plan to cut, that keeps the top from getting all bootched up. 3) Give the saw enough time to do its job. If you get impatient like I do, that's the first thing I have to always remind myself, SLOW DOWN and let the saw do its work.

Neat booth. However, I do see one thing that could be an issue, especially if you're working with solvent based paints like enamels and lacquers. The fan really should have an explosion proof shaded pole motor, especially if it's going to be in the airflow for the exhaust of the booth. Another option would be a belt driven fan where the motor where the fan is outside of the airflow.

Great idea, but I think it needs two fans. While you were spraying the sword I could see overspray going over your head. A fan on top should eliminate that. I don't know how you would implement that in this design though. Perhaps some type of foldable shelf on the back to hold it in when in the upright position? This definitely got me thinking of how to make one for larger pieces such as dressers and bookshelves.

@BruceAUlrich
@BruceAUlrich 8 лет назад
Interesting using the fabric for hinges. Have you found that using this helps with overspray AND the lingering odor, or just overspray. What I mean is, when I spray in my shop, I do it in an area that overspray is not really a problem. I wear a mask, but the smell will linger for a long time. I wondered if this is due to some of those particles kind of floating around, rather than being collected into that filter?
@Iliketomakestuff
@Iliketomakestuff 8 лет назад
I think the big benefit is overspray. I imagine that you'd need a huge amount of suction and a specific type of filter to get rid of the fumes entirely. I think it helps with fumes, but definitely doesn't get all of it.
