The misaligned bun is because they build the sandwich in the box upside down, each half of the bun in their respective halves of the box. The tartare sauce and fish goes on top of the crown, and the half cheese slice goes on the heel... then they just shut the box, flip it the right way up, then send it out. They don't place the heel of the bun onto the sandwich like you'd expect. I never got the half cheese slice thing either. I used to hate having to split a cheese slice in two, only for the other half to dry out because it could be hours before someone would order another one. I used to stick a whole slice in there instead.
Oddly the McD's Filet O Fish is one of my preferred sandwiches from McD's...the fish is better than their things they call burger meat which is a major disappointment. I think it is the tartar sauce - cause otherwise I rarely eat fish.. My grandma used to force me to eat poorly made/tasting frozen fishsticks almost daily as a kid, so I got turned off fish, and never was exposed to much fish besides those, early on cause she loved making them (she was a terrible cook/re-heater of frozen crap - her brussel sprouts were the most awful thing ever. I can count on one hand the few things she did cook good on --I have had to remake and re-do all her recipes to make them excellent). The only other time I eat fish is in Sushi---where I can taste the fish. Your sandy looks like a great job!! I would certainly eat it! Cheers!
Nowadays I am pretty sure they make them fresh everytime due to the low order count. But people often use the trick of ordering fries without salt to get them fresh and add salt from those little packets. Always better fresh.
So I just made my very first Filet O Fish. It was delicious. Since I don't have much time I used high quality frozen breaded Cod, pre sliced Cheddar (off the shelf), Brioche bun and Thomy Gourmet Remoulade (Tartre sauce - off the shelf). It took ca. 8 minutes to shallow fry the fish and whilst it's frying I put the cheese on the bun and opened the jar of tartre sauce. Perfect.
That looks epic mate. No comparison. Kind of frustrating when you see a place like McDonald's churning out such crap and making a fortune when you can make something so much better yourself
Have to confess... I’m a big foodie, have made fish burgers with homemade tartare sauce, minted mushy peas, Panko fried and beer battered versions with homemade brioche etc etc and yours looks super, super delicious however, I must fly the flag for McDonald’s Fillet - it’s the sauce! and even the token half slice of cheese. Whether they are cutting corners, it doesn’t matter, it really is just enough. Like it or not - it’s McDonald’s and they have mastered their own distinct flavour...nothing else quite tastes the same. I’m a burger purist, and love nothing more than some dry aged mince, smoke streaky, gherkins and a homemade burger sauce but the Big Macky D’s has a time and a place and despite the billions they make. There will always be a time in my life when I think ‘ooh, I fancy a Maccies!’ And 9/10 I’ll order a fillet.
Another brilliant recipe, I have never tried a Filet O Fish from McDonald's and I don't think I ever will, what a difference , I will be trying this one out. Brilliant thanks.
It's not that they taste really bad, it's just they don't really taste of much at all. The texture of the fish is 🤮. 100% better making your own. Hope you're well Wendy
I complained to McDonald's about my favorite their filet o fish about the tiny amount of tartar sauce & the half piece of cheese. They said their info shows that customers prefer a HALF PIECE OF CHEESE & it's POLICY to only put a small amount of tartar sauce. To me, the fish is mushy & the tartar sauce helps disguise that, so it's not MUSHY & DRY! What it boils down to is McDonald's doesn't care what it's customers want, or else the food wouldn't look like it does. I think they steam their the bun to get rid of the wrinkles so it looks like a baby's butt not an OLD one. Thank you for showing them what it should look like. 😄😍🐟🍔💜
Loads of shops do them poppy. All the big supermarkets have them down the ethnic food section. Or, better still if you have a independent Asian grocery store nearby, they should have them also. 😉
I'm in sw Ontario, and I hate to tell you this, but all Fillet-o-fish is served that way. They purposely place the cheese to one side (because they only use half a slice) and let the fish fall where it may. And I have had it that way from 4 or 5 outlet in the city I live. I once got so annoyed I asked to have the cheese centred as well as the fish, and I have say, McDonalds does cater to "special orders". But they are faster than cooking your own, and if you're at work without a packed lunch they are fine.
When I was a girl, way back when, the fish filet sandwiches were very different! They were at least double the size they are now and they were always so fresh. Your Mickey D's is particularly bad! However, they were good for a laugh so thanks for that!!😂 Have a good week, friend! ♥️
I've never had this sandwich and you clearly nalied it. However even from here in Corfu I saw as the UK government eased lock-down people were apparently prepared to queue for 4 hours to get to Maccy Dds. I think that tells more about the the taste of the British public than your fine efforts. Don't despair keep up your good work, hasta la vista baby. M
@@Adam_Garratt But don't forget the current advice from the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis and Croquet club, in the light of the covid crisis only handle your own balls!
yep, Don't show me a commercial of a beautiful sandwich or whatever and then serve me something that looks like Stevie Wonder assembled it. No offense Stevie.
It’s always been my favorite thing on the menu but they’ve definitely shrunk a bit over the yrs!😏…I wonder if they put flavor enhancers/additives in them to make them so delicious?🤔😋
Great video Adam! Nice muckbang too! I'll have to give your recipe a try. I won't eat Mickey D's fish sandwich. They are too tasteless and far too expensive for what you get. Thank you so much and keep doing that thing that you do! 💖😍
You're welcome Julie. Super simple trick. Works the same if you need an egg wash for the tops of pies. A pinch of salt just makes it much more brushable
Temping to say I made the MacDonalds.... but no really yours looked so much better! Serious question but you will probably think me stupid: what do you do with the used oil and if you ditch it, how?
Ha ha who did you upset in McD's for them to tread or sit on your Fillet thingie...lol.??? What is the hell is that cheese..? Looks like a yellow oblong bit of glue... Maybe it's supposed to keep the Fillet in place but it missed..lol... Loved your version - no comparison of course... Succulent fish, fresh Tartare sauce and a full piece of cheese... Toasting the bun would be a winner for sure... Thanks as always mate, loved it...xxx
Hi new sub here I used to love fillet of fish from mcs this is what the world needs good honest chefs instead of putting twenty ingredients that you’ve never heard of
The shallow frying takes quite a lot of oil and oil's really gone up in price. Are you able to re-use it or is that part of the price for making a superior dish?
Great one, Adam! It s probably best not to give the lemon to your cat or you will have a real sourpuss on your hands :-) When constructing the sandwich, (and I know this is not how McD does it) but I would put the tartar sauce on the bottom and put a piece of Red Leicester on the top. Speaking of which, can you do a vid on Red Leicester? It is a quintessential English cheese that I hear is somewhat endangered because of a dwindling number of artisanal producers.
Ahh now you see John, because I live in Leicester I have access to proper good red Leicester cheese. Sparkenhoe make a great red Leicester, so do Rutland. Fantastic cheese. Cheers John
Filet-o-Fish is the *only* sandwich I will eat at McDonald's, and that's only when whoever I'm with insists on McDonald's. The fish bit isn't bad, but they cheese-rape it with that oily square of yellow plastic and they also have a habit of getting orders wrong so it's always a gamble.
Just get the vouchers in the Metro paper and you can get the fillet plus medium fries for £1.99. Job done. Note: The vouchers are not accepted at the drive-through Macdonald's.
Adam the fish sandwich is my husbands fave and logans too but he wont buy them unless they are on special i.e. 2 for $5. Well done mate and I'm going to make this version and I will be the best G'ma ever !!
Yes Dan, I've been working on a recipe for some time. Hopefully soon I'll release it. I don't have fried chicken a lot, so tweaking the recipe is quite far apart. I'm getting there though. 🙂👍
Can't eat onions, so this is about the only thing I can have at McDonalds.. Have not had to eat there for some time, but I don't ever remember there being cheese in one. Shredded iceberg lettuce, yes, but cheese no. I do something similar at home using either Aldi Chunky Haddock in breadcrumbs (£4) or Tesco Chunky Cod in breadcrumbs (£5.25) for a pack of four. Bake in the oven. Now need to make my own tartare sauce, yum.
@@Adam_Garratt tbh your right, i use to love it. But didn't want the kids eating crap 🤣. But on another note you have now ruined McDonalds for us, my kids hate it now . Between your filet-o-fish and swiss double stack, my kids wont even look at a McDonalds burger 🤣
Me again I just have to say it’s rare to get a sandwich of any kind that received any effort. Not a McDonald’s fan but little people seem to like it and it’s rare that I don’t have to reassemble a sandwich. Kisses from Missouri state
I don't get the hype for them to be honest. There's so many better options out there and I think Maccy's is just well....OK. I think some of it is nostalgia. I loved getting a big mac with my dad as a kid. I felt so grown up 😂
I don’t know that one being in the Midwest states but I do appreciate food even though I consider eating out a waste of time because I don’t eat a lot. Still love and appreciate food
