How To Make a Flexible Shape Pattern Using Tape | Fabrication Tips & Tricks!

On this episode of Make It Kustom, it's "Just the Tip" time again! Here I show you a very useful and easy way to transfer a cut line from one area to another, by making a flexible shape pattern out of masking tape, so that they are an exact match! On this 1971 GMC Jimmy, I had to cut away some of the wheel well to allow for clearance with these larger tires and I want to make sure both sides are identical!

@@MakeItKustom I agree with hot rod dad your channel must be the best kept secret on the tube , I honestly just stumbled in here the other day and thought this was a discovery Channel or pilot show , very well done and your craft is definitely not the big network and that’s a true complement. Not to say all of them are crap but they somehow turn kustom into a reality / drama assembly line parody. I guess they say any publicly is good publicity ? However I’m a bit old school if your best at your craft they will stand inline to get in your shop so do be carful when they approach … love what your putting out it’s well worth my time . Look like a new sub to me !

Wray Schelling gives a great video tutorial on making flexible templates. He makes then with layout lines for symmetrical panels. He rebuilt a jaguar XKE bonnet (hood) recently and you wouldn’t believe the compound curves involved in that, but it was perfect. Thanks for the video.

I just tried this on valance panel for my 66 Mustang. My original had backup light holes cut in it. I found a good used original but it didn't have backup light holes. I wondered how I could accurately cut the holes into it and remembered this video I saw awhile back. I used the tape for the shape and cut out the holes and laid it out on the other panel. Worked perfect! Very accurate. Thanks for making this video.

🔵 With the exception of silicone-tape (which is made to be stretched-over a workpiece), tape should NEVER be 'Pulled-tightly',..... Tape should be "Layed-in-place without slack",....not 'Stretched' into place. Although the use that he's putting this tape to is not going to have to remain where it is for any considerable length of time, tape that is 'Stretched' into place (under-tension) will come loose all by itself in a VERY short time. (Especially on corrugated-cardboard boxes!).

Cool concept but I'm confused on the application. The goal was more room for the wheels right? Why not just cut a triangle shape out of the face edge, leaving the arch, then bend it over, weld it shut and done because You said you used a piece of the back of the drivers fender? Why? Maybe there was rust involved?
@MakeItKustom
