Here is how I made a flip top cabinet / cart for my Craftex CX813 Lathe. It was challenging because of the length of the lathe, but I was able to build a super useful cabinet with a flip-top to hide away the lathe and provide lots of storage

Tight. I love having a lathe, but since it's not an everyday tool in my workflow it's hard to deal with it when not in use. This is the best solution I've seen.

Thanks, DP. Yeah, it’s for sure not an everyday tool on most shops.

An ingenious way to solve your storage problem. It reminds me of my mother's old Singer sewing machine cabinet. The machine would disappear in a manner similar to your design. Well done, as usual.

Wow! I didn’t put that together but it’s TOTALLY like an old sewing desk! Thanks for watching

Nice idea, few things I would do different and maybe for people who watch this this may be a helpful tip, 1st thing I would have the lathe flip the other way. If ever the locking mechanism fails the lathe would then fall away from you instead of into you, secondly having the lathe flip opposite way also positions the lathe on the edge of the work bench giving a much more comfortable position to work.

Technical issues aside it looks like a well assembled unit. Great job!

Yeah, the operation of the lift is awesome. In retrospect, a counter weight would have been a nice addition, but I can always look at adding something like that in the future

Great video. I love that you appear to have a shop vac under your miter saw and a dust collector next to the saw and neither one is hooked up to the miter saw.

Haha. The dust collector on the wall is.

Thanks! So much storage crammed into this cabinet and hides away the lathe so perfectly

Love this build! Would’ve loved to see the whole thing painted blue with the one orange drawer! Can’t wait for the cafe racer build!

Wow, well thought out! Nice to see your boy using the shop. I'm building shop cabinets in the next month and will be stealing some ideas.

Thanks Tom! RU-vid is tricky to get an audience going

Did you ever make plans or do you have Any kind of sketch of it? My shop is small I use several flip top cabinets, I was just cautious because of the weight of a lathe. Great idea

Such a great design man! The lid feature for future dust collection assistance is super clever! And I lost a whole memory card on my last video too...its pretty devastating when it happens, I feel ya!

Yeah, it’s sucks! Lost a bunch from this build and a full other build. Totally sucks.

Looks like you got a whole new saw stop! Congrats! I agree, it's very hard for youtubers in the woodworking/maker community to continually grow. I think RU-vid doesn't push smaller creators who aren't creating content more than once a month, which is why there are so many talking head videos these days. They're quicker to produce since there is no project to film. Project videos in general don't seem to perform as well these days anyways.

Thanks, Scott! It’s crazy how much views have dropped in the last 12 months for all makers. I know it’s not an isolated thing. Take care.

@@furthernorthfab Everyone was enjoying this summer particularly well it seems. Hopefully things will come back around as winter is around the corner. It's always nice to see more Canadian content out there, cheers!

I like this idea of storing the lathe sideways but the actual flip up part that holds the lathe doesn't look as solid as your double ply sides. Have you had any issue with vibration on larger unbalanced pieces? I'm at the point where I'm considering just leaving my lathe out all the time and using it as a disc sander when not in use. It seems there's no good way to design a flip cart that doesn't look a little unstable for a lathe. I also don't quite understand how the dust collection will work with this design. Would love to see a follow up video.

Cool design, but it looks like the lathe is too far back. Maybe that was just the angle of the camera when you were flipping it in and out, because it looks more reasonable in the footage where your son is using it.
@furthernorthfab
@furthernorthfab 2 года назад
I think it’s just the camera angle. With the tool rest in place, the body position feels super comfortable with where it is in relation to the front of the table.

Safety features? Boy you need to do something about the dust at your miter saw and you better start to wear a mask or something otherwise your poor lungs😢
