In today's video I will be showing you how I created a folding desk for my son's bedroom a couple of years ago.
You can buy me a coffee here www.buymeacoff... or become a monthly member to unlock Discord forum membership, exclusive content and automatic entry into my FREE Monthly Giveaway. Thank you SO SO much!!
You can now access my 🛠Charlie DIYte Amazon Tool Store here www.amazon.co.... - where you'll find all my tried, tested and much loved DIY tools arranged into handy categories.
I had recently finished renovating my son's bedroom, and with limited space for a desk I started to think about how we could fit a desk in his room.
A quick Google didn't really come up with any suitable folding desk options, so I realised I was going to have to make my own desk. So I started browsing the internet - Pinterest was a good source, but every option required a pair of hinges or a piano hinge, and larger hinge stays at the side of the desk, and these ranged from £6 for a pair from Ironmongery Direct to just under £60 per pair from Perceptive Fittings (which I can't find a link to anymore).
So I decided to design a desk that had NO HINGES WHATSOEVER - and this is how I did it!
Today's Toolkit
- MDF - 25mm
- 8mm metal pin - salvaged from a 1970s towel drier swing arm
If you decide you want to make a desk with hinges, then here are a couple of links you might find these useful:
- Folding desk stay £5.82 goo.gl/4ik2Db
- Piano hinge from £3.12 goo.gl/FNquUc

Hmmm, interesting. This video has me rethinking how to construct the desk I need for the living room. I don’t consider myself a DIY’er but your videos have given me a lot of confidence to tackle some of my own projects. There are a lot of great woodworking channels on RU-vid but very few aimed at the limited tool and non workshop owning audience. In addition, the imperial measures used in many of the American videos are a barrier. Cheers and keep the videos coming.

Great solution Charlie. That's what I love about making our own stuff. Creative problem solving. Also really enjoyed the video format. Retrospective storytelling and informative with the sometimes laboured format of every detail we often see elsewhere. Have a great week.

I'm was just looking for some kind of folding table solution and look what just popped up in my subscription feed! Since I don't need the shelves I was thinking more in the line of a hinged tabletop that could be raised up from a hanging down position with a support leg made of some sheet material that could be swung out until it was perpendicular to the wall, right under the tabletop the support leg would probably be as long as the tabletop extended out from the wall when it was raised and much more narrow at the floor. But this hinge-less design is simply just a lot more elegant solution to the problem and the shelves are just an added bonus. The thickest mdf board I've got at home is about 15 mm and that is probably a little to flimsy to use for a folding table, and since a trip to the hardware store is needed anyway I'll probably try to use 18 mm birch ply instead of mdf. Thank you for the inspiration and the good ideas!
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 6 лет назад
You're very welcome Niklas - good to hear from you and thanks for taking the time to tell me about your project. Yes that 18mm sounds like a good option. You just need to make sure that your pins are proportionate in diameter to the thickness of the desk, and therefore strong enough - not that they have to be too strong as they're only guides after all.

Brilliant. I was trying to figure out how it wasn’t falling off the front. And then you delivered the pin reveal. I know your philosophy is DIY without all the complicated kit and huge workshops, but I would say that if a DIYer wants to treat themselves to a more complicated power tool (beyond combi drill and impact driver that most of us have now) I’d go with Router. So useful on so many levels.

@@CharlieDIYte My hubby keeps on praising me, so I must be doing something right. I will send to you pictures of my wardrobe build and I thank you for inspiring me to actually do it. I started out with the mere basics of tools and used Homebase (great advise from you) and B&Q to rip the long sheets to size for the main carcass build. I plan to make a video when all is finished to give praise to you Charlie, Peter Millard (10 minute Workshop) and Andy (Gosforth Andyman)... supporting the best (imo) of British in showing the everyday man and woman how to do good DIY. I thank you Charlie, my wardrobe was my biggest project and now I own Router, Bosch Saw with Guide Rail, jig saw, multi-tool and Ryobi Double bevel mitre saw. Channelling out rebates, like you said in your wardrobe video made it all so much easier to get the job done more accurately and I can now make drawers, which a year ago, I thought to be impossible. ♥️🐣🐥😀

Great design and who cares if it isn't immaculately finished, it is for a child who know doubt do not always look after things. However the design behind the desk is what is genius and it can be applied to other desks that people can spend more time on and finish to a higher standard should they wish. Great job!

Hi Charlie, just seen your videos this morning. Good idea for space saving desk. A thought came to me while watching. The two strips of wood that you slot the desk under to keep it down while using the desk - why not put a long piece of MDF plank across them to make in effect another shelf?! I saw you take the lamp from the shelf above to put down onto the desking, but with the plank going across the unit on top of those two strips of wood on either side the lamp or pens etc can stay down there

It's an amazing way to make the desk flush with the rest of the bookcase: I picture a wall of inbuilt bookcases with a desk like that, and instead of two side rails the desk slides into a "pocket" created by a very low-sitting shelf that would hold monitors and a desk lamp. It'd be a fantastic solution for a home office in an apartment (or anywhere where space is tight): when you finish for the day the workstation just disappears.

Hi Charlie, great video as always, thanks. I am wondering what the boxes with holes in them in the underfloor space are?
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 6 лет назад
Thanks Robin - really appreciate that and thanks also for generally watching my vids! The boxes with holes in them have the kitchen ceiling down lights in them. It's not so much a heat thing as the LEDs emit almost no heat compared to the CFLS I originally had, but as I was filling between the joists with a Knauff acoustic roll insulation I wanted to keep the down lights away from the insulation and give them a little air circulation. My attempts to insulate the ceiling from sound were pathetic as the Knauff does very little. I should have used Rockwool, followed by an acoustic floor board and not screwed it down. 🙄

I'm making a bed soon for a customer (in a box room in a semi) it's going up on the wall across the width of the room and because the room is so small it will impede over the window opening. Is there a way of doing this without a router? This design is exactly what I need but I don't have a router. Maybe a good excuse to buy one? :)
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 6 лет назад
I don't think so. I meant to talk about the router more in the video. When I bought my De Walt router I was a bit overwhelmed with it at first but it is an invaluable tool now. I use it for everything from rebating locks, putting an ogee edge on skirting boards and of course this. If you're buying one do a bit of research because you could buy a 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch shank router. The 1/4 inch is lighter and easier to use but the 1/2 inch shank is sturdier more powerful and produces more accurate cuts.
@racketman2u
@racketman2u 6 лет назад
It's a good question though, that was the first thing that struck me too; I don't have a router, but I do have a lathe, so I thought I could do the same using some aluminium or steel channel and machine some rollers to fit; sounds expensive of time, and it is, but my time costs me nothing! It's always fun to use what you have .
@kevsterman
@kevsterman 6 лет назад
Thanks Charlie. I think I'm definitely going to get one as I'm moving to a new flat soon and there is so much I want to do that a router will really come in handy.
