Soapy water with your finger will smooth that out perfectly instead of the paper towel. The silicone won’t stick to your finger. So keep a small bowl with water and dish soap and use your finger to smooth out any imperfections.

Another way to test it before you pour the resin is to add water to the mold and watch or come back about 10 or 20 minutes to see if any water leaked then seal it to avoid wasted resin.

It is easier if you cut the nozzle shorter making a bigger hole. You only have to go around once or twice depending how big the hole is. Cover what is left with plastic and a rubber band. Keep a little bowl of something like Dawn dishwashing liquid, one part Dawn to two parts water. You can put your fingers in it and smooth around the inside. Then press the bottom of the outside down onto the mat. Test for leaks with water and one drop of food colouring. Saves time and I am not patient. If I had to go around three or four times I would throw it out the window. I do love your trays. 🌷

Hello dear. I’m 71 yo and taught many classes. You are a very good teacher. I hope you don’t get offended. I’m sharing and not being critical of your work. If you ever need the inside of your mold to be very smooth, cut a piece of clear plastic the circumference of circle (or any shape). I’ve always called it acetate. I could be wrong about the name. Join the ends with clear packing tape on the inside. It holds better. Now you’re ready to start squirting silicone. Your work is beautiful.

I use bowls for this. I put Vaseline around the rim then invert it onto the the mat then caulk around the bowl. Perfect circles every time.

I’ve done this method. Only I didn’t use a paper towel I drew the shape I was making with a sharpie. And since the mat is see-through it was easy to just flip over and trace on the other side

Ok, question?? I'm trying to use the acetate sheets and it seems the silicone does not stick well to the plastic 😏 what can I do to make it stick? Glue gun??

Yes, you can hot glue around the silicone if you need a little extra grip strength. Good luck!

When I make my tray molds, I just trace the shape I want on the mat so I don't have to worry about the silicone getting inside the design space, frees up your other hand too.

To keep the silicone from dripping all you have to do is release the plunger.

I have made two trays so far. I think the heating of the resin cased the bottom of the silicone mat to buckle. I had to do a flood coat on the bottom to level it. Did you have that problem? Btw, Thank You for the tutorial.

Have you ever had your mold wrinkle? I made a free form tray mold and around the silicone it bent and wrinkled. Like I doubt I'll be able to use this unless I glue it down to a board or something .. everyone else's turns out fine I don't know why mine did this lolol

Sure! You can use plastic or even plastic wrap... you just need to make sure there aren't any wrinkles in the bottom or they'll translate into wrinkles in the bottom of your piece.

I would assume it's not a horrible idea, but it may depend on the specific climate in your location. If anything, I suggest reading the instructions on the silicone label. Different brands may have slightly different instructions.

@@robynr It's hard plastic so you definitely can't squeeze it! They do have silicone that you can squeeze but (a quick amazon search) tells me none of them are 100% silicone which you need. Luckily a caulk gun is like 5 dollars... so it's easier just to get one!

Drip less is that the pressure on pushing out caulk will stop or slow down when you stop squeezing the grip of gun. So in nut shell it has to do with the pressure of caulk coming out the stopping when you release the trigger. Hope you understand my babble. Allyson Scarpitti mix a little dish soap and water on your fingers while the silicone is wet you can manipulate the mold without it sticking to your fingers.

Have you tried smoothing the inside of the silicone before it dries? Yes indeed just use dish soap and dip your fingers into a little bowl and go around the inside it will smooth the inside and lay the silicone to the mat where it won't leak out the resin.

Lovely is it okay to use surgical gloves ? I don't want to directly use my finger and I've tried using plastic gloves and it did not work one bit

Pearl I just did a silicone agate shape on a silicone mat and smoothed the edges inside of the silicone and used 91% alcohol and it was easy peasey to smooth into place like I wanted. No soap!

Yes! I've used them over and over again. Every so often I have to fill in spots on the inside with more silicone but over all they hold up well!

The process is exactly the same, just instead of a circle you would draw a rectangle (or whatever shape you want your tray to be!)

Wouldn’t it be easier to just draw with washable marker and trace that than using a paper towel?

I thought the outside noise was a nice personal touch like she is inviting us into her world. I thank everyone for their time thay they are giving freely. I don't want to request extra steps for them to do...it should be as easy as possible so that they feel relaxed bringing content vs. them thinking "Oh just forget it..that takes too much time...they don't appreciate what I do anyway." It doesn't necessarily NEED to look smooth on the outside... you just don't want any gaps where resin can seep out. So by smoothing the edges together you have a solid wall and fewer weak points for resin to escape. The main goal is to be solid and feel smooth on the inside so that you don't have to sand as much when the piece is cured.
