I think that Charmy is a Bee, just not a Honey Bee. I learned some while back that only Honey Bees die when they sting something, as their stingers are barbed, whereas other bees have smooth, cone-like stingers instead.
I’m unsure if it really counts but another species I often choose is the seedrian race (You know, the humanoid plant-like creatures from Sonic X). There’s a wide variety of plants and flowers you can use as a theme for said characters. But they aren’t really mobians so... maybe I’ll make an angel fish or a dragonfly.

WARNING: LENGTHY READ. Hey howdy. I just saw that whole "How to make a Sonic Oc" video and honestly I appreciate how you tackled the topic. I'm a Graphic Design student, but I developed my love of drawing when making Sonic Ocs; some not so good, and some who I’ve developed into completely different characters in the modern day. If I can add to the points in that video, I find that Oc can have a tendency to develop along with the artist. I actually came up with my own take on a Spider Mobian back in 2015, Spinner, and the overall design has grown over the years. I still use him to this day. I also like how you touched on the plethora of different species a mobian can be. Back in the day I tried making eels, urchins, owls, cheetahs, kangaroos, otters, snakes, butterflies, rhino beetles, grass hoppers, scorpions, even mythic creatures like Cerberus, or gargoyles. One thing I’d like to add is to try experimenting with the body proportions of Ocs. Sure, some female characters may end up with curves, but I direct your attention to Madame Rouge the Bat, who has cleavage. Besides, a body type that didn’t work on one character may work better on another! I initially made Spinner similar to Knuckles, being a bruiser who’ll grab opponents and chuck them across the arena. However, overtime I ended up making him a slim, Jack Skellington-like character; Tall, thin, with a general air of sophistication to him. Also I don’t understand why most spider Mobians I see have multiple legs, when you can pull a Machamp or a Muffet(Undertale) and give him 4 more arms. 6 arms, 2 legs, 8 total limbs! Pardon that slight tangent. Also experiment with clothing options! Spinner used to wear a street jacket, like a thug, but it was after a drawing accident that I decided to draw him in the tall thin demeanor, swapping the jacket for a tux like suit, until I settled for a long black cloak. Last point of contention I want to make; Powers. Some people want to give their characters powers, and I say go ahead! Give them powers if you so wish! Just be reasonable. Every so often I’ll hear about a dude who essentially made an Oc that could rival SSG Goku in his normal form. Tldr, don’t make the guy the most powerful thing on the planet; That’s Shadow’s title. Spinner being a Spider would spit thread and was an expert trap setter, and he still is, but I added Ice abilities into his repertoire, allowing him to conjure Ice weapons from any water source in the area; Even the air if he so needed to. Overall I love the video and hope this isn’t too lengthy a read to anyone who’s interested.
Woah, looking at all of these professionals redesign ocs for the better and make good fan characters has made me realize... My first ever characters were actually pretty good- They weren't to edgy or op, they didn't have eye-bleeding color design, and all of them had semi-decent backstories and roles. Way to go, 11 year old me.
I think I had like… two OC’s in one at one point. A green hedgehog named Harry(yeah, very original), who was a scientist who worked on some unknown project. Died after it escaped and was reborn as Speed(a red hedgehog, also very original). Yeah… this feels awful… but hey at leas they aren’t overall edgy.
I had Nikolai, a Sonic recolor in pure with glasses, a tuxedo, an earring and pink quill tips. He escaped a bombing of his town and befriended Espio The Chameleon, later t discover he had an older brother, named Phineas, colored red. Phineas wore a scarf, a vest and white boots with black pants. Phineas was colored red and had a scar under one eye.
You've suddenly spurred my artist's block back to life. Even though they're mythical and probably wouldn't fit within the universe, I drew two Avians; a Male Phoenix and a Female Thunderbird. Ferno the Phoenix and Omen the Thunderbird.
Even though they are both technically Fly types, I decided to give them something different. Ferno is a Power Type, using his fire powers to decimates waves of enemies at a time. Unfortunately, this also gives him a short-fused temper, and is prone to creating infernos in his rage. Omen is a Speed Type, using her ability to harness the storms and the lightning to literally bolt across miles in the blink of an eye. It is said that seeing her in the sky is a bad omen, as a horrible storm is soon to follow her flight.
Just finished the video, and holy shit you actually drew them-like you didn’t use photoshop or just recolor some already existent character and add hair to make them “Totally original” you even made two species of Mobian that I’ve never seen before, props to that. Not to mention calling out artists for using magazine model bodies for these round characters- leave the art style alone its innocent and should stay that way! You’re designs for these characters are awesome and I hope that with your permission someone will make a comic series involving them or at least guest starring them as background characters!
I’m currently working on my own sonic fan character/OC thanks to this video. I’m also working on a name and a story for character development. And throw him into the pile with the many Shadow recolours I ended up with along the way (no the time wasn’t wasted there. I made an army of Shadow Androids for future usage) I am trying to make a unique hedgehog. The most hardest thing known to man. I am still trying. I will update when I finally get the character the way I want and not be a total recolour of Shadow yet again. Atleast I’m not ending up with sonic recolours.
You don’t always have to stick to the small stick figure frame. Most of the Sonic heroes are either 15 or below, so of course they would look younger. But some of the older characters, like Vanilla and Rouge even Shadow have other features that represent their age. I have a Sonic oc that is a Doe and older than 15, since she’s both a deer and an adult I made her curvy (curvy but *not* sexual!) gave her a power and yeah done.
The name of my OC is spark the hedgehog and the the name already makes clear wich power he has :P ,I made him to be from another dimension with his own powerful gems but instead of emeralds they are sapphires, and I even made a lore for then. Colors:white and some green details(like shadow, but his hair(or spikes) due to his power is a little bit similar to the SS3 hair) He don't like mess around when he's fighthing he moves in the speed of lighthing, he can make a thunder attack and charging too much energy he can even make a thunder storm but, this will spend too much of his energy and it will get tired quickly so he always use those moves when he really needs to. On his dimension he lives on mobius a futuristic planet with one of the best advanced technology in the universe but some ancient locations are still intact and now are cultural heritage. He is very confident, a little playful and also he's very protective about a certain character(wich i'm not going to tell since it's not finished yet). If you really read all of this i'm impressed tbh.
I have really many but I can tell u about some! My story is connected with another person and it happens in the Sonic Riders series' timeline. Also it's years in the future with Jet and Wave have kids and everything.Here are some summaries of mine: Alan the Wolf: An energetic, cool and full of optimism wolf that acts like an idiot but it's actually a really good mechanic and tech builder. He is like a shonen anime protagonist as he is very brave and never gives up and values his friends a lot. He tends to be the "light" of the team in bad times but even good guys have their limit. He is a power type and has mainly the power of explosive crystals which are very destructive but also an excellent sense of smell since he is a wolf. Najira Tsubasa the Bird Hybrid: Najira is from another dimension that is fully infested with monsters and his clan called "Tsubasa clan" struggle to live and protect themselves. The Tsubasa clan is composed with bird mixed with a mammal mobian looking creatures that have angel like wings and everyone shares the same power called "Soul Balance" which their power come from their souls and must follow a lot of unfair rules because of this power but also the clan in general is very strict. He ran away from his clan because of freedom but he falls into a well that is actually a portal for the dimension of Sonic Riders series. He now lives in this dimension hiding everything related to his past and dimension. He is a very TALL, calm, serious and strong guy but he has a tsundere and arrogant idiot side like Inuyasha xD. Weirdly his bird animal instints are more intense in him than in normal mobians which can be weird to actually normal mobians. He is a speed type due to the fact that his wings were ripped off and sealed on his back with a powerful seal with no possibility of getting them back (only if he dies, the seal is broken). To compensate, he takes advantage of being already fast and improves his running and movements to be reallyyyy fast. His powers are the called the "The Balance of Yin and Yang" but before was only Yang ,but due to a corruption , it gained a Yin counterpart, its a power connected with his soul also but controls the Yin and Yang energy. He very often uses the Yang power because the Yin powers go beserk and he can't control it well. Aria the Dolphin: A independent and very strong girl that nobody wishes to mess with. She might look small and cute but you should fear her and I mean really. She is sadistic, bitter, sassy, quite cold, sarcastic and quite of a bi*ch but she is very hardworking, mostly selfless, caring and protective only with the ones she really cares about and her best quality is weirdly a big compassion. Aria had a really rough mysterious past which made her like this but inside she is actually a good person that has a lot to work on...she just needs to find finally peace and she will act different. She is a fly type and has the power of "Celestial Wind" which is basically the power of the Air Element but with kinda celestial things in a mix. She is actually the incarnation of the Air Element as a mobian but its a long story. She is also a professional extreme gear racer. I have plenty other fcs but I think these three are enough for now
His name is Electron The Coyote, he is a shaky teenage kind of character, but still isn’t afraid to get into scrapes, he ran away when his parents were protecting him from eggman, who wanted him for his power, he gets lost in the forest, but is found by sonic and tails, they decide to take him in, the team tried finding his parents, but had no luck, electron requested to be trained, so he got trained, silver and blaze thought him how to use his kinetic abilities, and knuckles thought him basic fighting techniques Powers: electrokinesis (he can fly shoot lightning from his hands, zap stuff, you get the gist) Appearance, he has black fur, with blue stripes on his arms and legs, that kind of look like thunderbolts, and has a similar pattern round his eyes, when he used his powers his blue stripe things glow, he has a (sort of) super form, where he builds up so much electricity his entire body just glows blue and cyan Other stats: top speed: speed of lightning (a 3rd the speed of light), if he goes any faster he burns out Maximum volts of electricity: unknown Good?

Good advice but honestly I think that variety and characters is really important especially whenever you have talking animals, I always saw Sonic characters kind of like Looney tunes, and if you look at someone like vector he is a very very different body compared to a lot of the mammal characters. Specifically like with the narwhal character, I think instead of sticking to the one base you could get more variation by connecting its head and body in the way that narwhals are kind of just like a tube shape so their body is closer being shaped like a pepper. Then again I guess I'm probably a little bit more advanced an artist than the intended audience but it's a thought
I have a spider OC! He’s a jumping spider named Pea; and he’s essentially a spy with like- a grappling hook gun to represent their webs, and I used circles where the eyes were to represent eyebrows for one positioning and two other ones for pattern and texture. :)
I learned that my first ever Sonic OC was actually pretty good. My boy lives on as a character I use in my comics and I want to design a plush for myself.
I think the spider you drew should be neutral. Whatever he does, it’s only for his benefit. He doesn’t care if Sonic saves the world or if Eggman’s empire takes over. If he joins up with someone, the reason would be if entities such as Mephiles (Sonic 06) or the Mederex (Sonic X) plan to do things that threaten everyone’s existence, including his own. Does that sound like a good character bio? If not, I’d like to know where I should improve as this video inspired me to create a sonic fan character…

My oc’s name is [REDACTED]. He is.... an odd case. He looks like an old Disney villain (kinda). But he’s actually pretty nice. Though if there’s one thing he hates it’s his fan girl may. She always chases him down and eventually he gets so mad he scratches his own eye with his claws. Oh and don’t worry about the scratching eyes part. He ok. He is immortal. Anyways if there one thing he loves it’s hanging out with metal sonic. They both like to cause some mischief. That’s all for him.
I named my own Tasmanian Devil character Trace after your wolf. This video really helped me get into creating and drawing my own characters and canon ones too. I'm actually working on a big sonic fan project now!!! But I always love to occasionally come back to this video and rewatch the video that taught me to draw characters of my favorite game franchise. Thank you for this video! Also on a side note. At 7:22 I actually wondered what a mobian with a muzzle would look like, and I ended up giving Trace one. Now it's one of her signature features, that also doubles as a way to hinder/balance her power in order to not make her "OP"
One day I wanna make my own OC named jestro the entertainer (he is a jackal) the ONLY thing I’m going for is a cartoony jester villain with extendable robot limbs and mostly uses a game show just to entertain people and himself and the final test should be a fight against him in a big spinning arena His powers: nothing but regular speed (not as fast as sonic but close), bomb summoning (takes a bit to recharge the bigger the bombs are the bombs can also be novelty toys chickens, cream pies and other plays things), and his mechanical limbs (based off of other jester villains) his robot limbs give him a small advantage over people with them wrapping around opponents and shocking them, don’t forget his claw like robot hands can turn into weapons (axes, maces, swords, blasters), he has a hover pad he stands on for flight, fear gas (based off of scarecrow and joker from DC) Likes: being a game show host, jesters (he is one after all XD) casual chaos and pranks, singing while fighting, jokes and puns (good or bad he likes em all), working on mimic robots that eggman makes (just imagine jester moto-bugs and other jester version of eggman robots), pets (pretends to not like them to seem cool) Dislikes: overly edgy sonic OCs, his show being ruined, cheaters So what do y’all think of him yah or nah? (Oh yeah do not steal or whatever XD)

She is a scavenger (cus she’s a raccoon) and lives in a treehouse in a canyon. (I made a full oc paper thingy). She’s a power type. She is good at jumping around trees and acrobatics and uses nature and the landscape in her advantage in battle. *that’s it.*
I've been making custom action figures of Sonic OCs for close to 15 years now, and I've seen them all, from people who use MS Paint to put extra bangs on a picture of Sonic, custom sprites, children's doodles, and even some amazing work that could be done by any of the pros. One of the things you should really avoid is hybrid animals, there is no precedent in any Sonic continuity for a mobian who is a combination of two different animal types (with the exception of actual mythical creatures, which we HAVE seen on occasion.) On another note, due to a recent custom I made I had to do WAY more research on mobian feet than I will EVER feel comfortable with, I've SEEN things man...
Thanks for this. I made a hedgehog named Yozora. He's a cherry blossom colored ninja with dreads that are slightly grey with blueish tips. He wears pretty casual streetwear with a kusanagi and Jordan Retro 11 Concords for shoes. His eyes are mismatched, one being blue, other being red. I'm happy with the way he turned out.
I really loved the Power type Narwhal she is so cool. I've made a sonic OC since I was inspired to do so after seeing Sonic 2 the other day. This video was really helpful as I've got to work on the type, name and backstory still.

While I was watching this I was making a jackalope OC with a strange name and a strange nickname. I wanted to give her an alliteration name but I wanted to also give her a name that fitted her stretchy abilities. So I just made her be named Jumpy, but NICKNAMED Stretch. Now I feel like a genius-
i’ve had a sonic oc for literally an entire decade, went from being a recolor sonic to me still making an entire planet that my character came from because i was REALLY into the concept of a space pirate. her species has a mix of features from wild cats i thought were cool and various species of moths!! i gave them the general shape of a mobian but i made them have enough different features that it’s apparent that they’re from another world. love seeing videos like this fr.
I think the reason why they just go toeless. Because it is quite a bit difficult into designing the toes for every single animal like Tails’ toes should be quite different than Sonic’s the same thing goes with Knuckle’s and Rouge’s and Jet’s and so on and so forth. Plus, how can you make an anthropomorphic animal’s bare toes appealing? I have seen them in the Archie comics and in fan animation and those don’t bother me at all.
I went into this video looking for new techniques, skills, and tips to use when creating new characters for my "Sonic Sprint" AU, but I was rather surprised to see you endorse many techniques I was already using, often subconsciously! I just wish I could attatch some photos to show my two existing characters as of writing, Tallix the hedgehog and Leela the fennec. Also, I agree. If there's one ship in the franchise that should be canon, it's Silvaze.

I recently created my own oc Sonic character. His name is Henry Pecko, he is an Eagle and he is a scientist with an approximately equal intelligence to Eggman, only he's not evil. A friend to Sonic and Tails and though he isn't active in their adventures since he is older than they are, he still finds ways to be helpful to the duo and their other friends.
I know I'm probably like a thousand years late but I'm going to be completely honest to you... If fandoms pacifically like Sonic had a Google slide presentation for new fans you're video should be on the how to "Properly" make a good looking fan character if I had you're video back then I don't think I would have made lots of the mistakes I did with my original oc and other ocs I made thanks to you're video I made lots of better ocs then the ones I had back then.
I studied some Sonic character designs and came up with a wolf artist and gave her a giant pencil named Penny (the thought process was that I tried to turn Pencil into a name). I independently came up with similar guidelines to this video. I think one of the coolest parts of her design is her color--green. I couldn't think of a good color and after thinking for about thirty minutes, I pulled up a color-personality test and pretended to be her for the test. I think she turned out looking like she would fit in the series, but I may need to give her a slight revamp to separate her design from Whisper a little more.
Thank you for making me realize how much talent I never knew I had these kind of videos make realize how much the sonic fandom means I watch your video along with another follow the steps then draw them but this one truly helps me challenge myself 10/10 best video ever.
I imagine a character who is a mint green lynx named Sean since some sonic fans think that Sonic is in love with Sally and he has no interest in Amy because he run’s away from her so I to give Amy a new boyfriend and that is Sean the Lynx
Update since my last comment: finally after many more attempts with the help of this video. Got my sonic fan character look less like a shadow copy and more like a hedgehog that looks more original. I have to say. Watching this over and over again actually helped. I tried giving my fan character a name. “Yamato” and I added a bit of spiked down hair at the front slightly covering one of the eyes. Just to make him look slightly unique. I’ve added a story for the character that I’m improving on. Now that I’m done with my sonic fan character. I’ll start working on a friend for my fan character that’s not a Hedgehog. (I gotta say I have a new favourite RU-vidr now)
Many thanks for the entertaining video. When I played Forces, my first avatar was a bird, and I made him look like an Oriole. I even gave him one of the baseball caps as a reference to my favorite baseball team. I plan to make my next one a chameleon, like Espio, except with three horns.

I watched this like... 4 months ago. The first time I tried to make my OC.... it didn’t turn out so well but a few months later and I know more about this stuff, I make a character that really fits me. The sad part it, I can’t figure out a name😅.
You can make any animal into a sonic oc, yes, any, they don't need to be real, YOU CAN MAKE A POKEMON SONIC OC, DO IT, DO IT YOU COWARDS, ANY POKEMON WILL DO, YOU CAN MAKE A DIGIMON SONIC OC, DO IT, DO IT YOU COWARDS, ANY DIGIMON WILL DO, YOU CAN MAKE A YO-KI-WACH SONIC OC, DO IT, DO IT YOU COWARDS, ANY YO-KI WILL DO, YOU CAN MAKE YOUR OWN ANIMAL FOR A SONIC OC.
For people making classic-style oc's, just make the torso base perfectly circular, make the limbs shorter, and the pupils just being black dots/ovals and having no iris.
It's one way to do it of course. Myself; I do a lot of that backwards half the time. My last two characters I came up with started with names and backstories and everything else followed. I don't think they fit into the traditional power, speed, or flying/technique exactly, being that one's a singer and the other is a lumberjack. I do have others that would probably fit into those categories better though.

Ok, quickie for why female mobians where clothes and males don't, it's most likely because otherwise it's seen as "OH GOD THE ANIMAL ISN'T WEARING A SHIRT HOW SCANDALOUSE CHILDREN COVER YOUR EYES" It's the same reason girls can't go out shirtless in public but a guy can, but honestly dumber.
