Britt shows you how to make a helmet template from a head form. The template is constructed of random packing supplies, plastic wrap, and tape. Build up the form you want and then cover the helmet in tape to trace and transfer your pattern.

Building up a cheap-o styrofoam head is genius! I have to give this a go, I have a weirdly large head so standard patterns rarely fit me, but doing a life cast is quite scary and time intensive.

Excellent info! Thanks! It's also brilliant to see professionals completely redo an entire project when it doesn't turn out as desired; helps me get through those times I'm having trouble with a build.

Some feedback on your channel: I'm an international viewer (Australian to be exact), and have watched the channel for a while. I understand you're a US based channel and prop-makers, but perhaps you could mention other names of materials and such in different places of the world? Sometimes I see a video and go "what are they using here?". I did with the "plastic wrap" as it's known as something else here, but was one of the more obvious ones. Just some small feedback, and a possible way to improve your channel. Love the work you do, keep it up =)

Found this just in time to make my daughter's dragon-scale armor. I have a body mold made from a t shirt covered in duct tape and I was totally lost on how to make a template from it. This is the best channel ever!

this is pretty great so far - any tips on what to look out for when placing the cutting lines for more complicated/more natural and less geometric shapes? I've seen this tape-pattern technique a lot, but couldn't find a more in-depth look at how to know where and how to cut - like, okay, it's obvious in some parts, like sharper edges and stuff - but what I mean is, like, how do you know it makes more sense to make a bunch of indents in a long shape, or a few big indents, and when to just cut it into two pieces? Where would you follow a curve in a straight line, and where in a -err- curved line? If I just cut smaller and smaller until they all lay flat, I'll probably end up with much too many tiny pieces that don't need to be so tiny or so numerous. Or how can you tell when an edge will need to be bevelled, and how much? Does it seem obvious when you have the real thing in front of you, or are there some signs you can look out for? Is it just trial and error? Because if so - any tips on not wasting a bunch of material?

It honestly comes down to practice. In order to determine if you need to add relief cuts - or darts - to a shape you can cut it out and attempt to lay it flat. If it holds a curve, it needs darts to help it lay flat. The more you practice and mess with forms, the more it will make sense to you!

How would you go about making a template for a child-sized head? Is there a way to make a template directly on a child's head (without suffocating them etc)
@punishedprops
@punishedprops 3 года назад
You can still use the tape and plastic method you'll just want to be more careful and take your time and probably not cover their face at all

Hey Punished Props, So i need your help. I absolutely love your channel and its super helpful, I'm fairly new the the cosplay fabricating world and i think i bit off a bit more than i can chew. I live in Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rico Comic-con is in May and i offered a friend to make him a 2016 God of War Kratos outfit (seens he already looks like him and i wanted to do a (Steven Universe) Rose quartz Valkyrie armor for myself and id love to see you can suggest specific videos or can you make a video off of this i don't know but anything will help. Can wait to hear from you guys, Thank you and Love ya!

Hi punish props. I have a question about paint. What kind of paint is the best for plastics. I'm making reapers gun from overwatch and I'm making it from a nerf gun. I'm at the painting stage and I'm really looking forward to finishing the prop.
