I am making the Hemingway Kit Compact Rotary Broach. This is a handy tool for the shop, allows me to make shaped holes for Hex, square, etc. I purchased this kit from Hemingway Kits.
This is a six part series check out the other parts.

RRIS, Thanks for showing us the world of Hemingway kits. That rotary broach kit is a nice little pattern. I can see making several in increasing sizes. no end to the use for cap head screws.

Hi Randy, great job on making the rotary broach, it is real gem of tool. Also thank you for the post machining review. These reviews add a lot of value and appreciate your experience. I don't scimp on my parting tools because it less expensive to buy once and keep it a long time. I use the ISCAR cut-off inserts in old style ISCAR self grip SGFH 26-3 and SGFH 19-2 blades and Hertel tool blocks. I use my cross slide power feed at 0.0006"/rev for stainless and 0.0008"/rev or a little more for CRS for parts under 3" diameter. I could go faster but this has worked with no problems so why push it when running at 250 or less RPM.

You put this together well Randy - super project. Hadn't realized before how important the 1 degree offset was to make it work.... logical of course. Like that indexer of yours. You made a super high precision job of that - very nice work. Glad it works so well.

A very nice build Randy and a well put together series. It's great to see a kit come together like that and to give such pleasing results too. A big thumbs up to both Hemingway for a well put together kit and what appeared to be good instructions and to you for a great build.

Great project. Thank you so much for posting the info on your parting tools at the end. I had pretty much figured out that the Seco must be a CFZL tool, and yes, they are still available. I'm ordering one today. Thank you and happy new year.

Nice job Randy! For around $40 that seems like a good deal. You should try some other geometries on the broach for some fun. I wish you and all of your family a happy, healthy, and prosperous new year!

Beautiful work Randy! It really is very compact, I knew it was going to be small when I opened the parts up, but seeing it finish it looks tiny. I will be building mine soon and using your videos as an extra guide. I will also let you know how the Floating Reamer goes when I get round to it :)

Beauty Randy! When you are aligning it , it would be nice to have a centre drilled hole to use a centre to support the broach. That would be very handy for making boring bars, I would like to see a square broach operate, or is the depth a serious limit on these?
@chrisstephens6673
@chrisstephens6673 7 лет назад
Nicely done, I think I might have to make one to help in making the handles for the petrol taps I make. Now that you have set the off set, you will have to make sure all your broaches are exactly the same length. As you have a surface grinder, it would be possible to save your "mishaps", harden them and then grind to a size smaller. Is there something wrong with my 'puter, it says there are 36 comments but I only see 2?

Thanks, Randy - very informative and a beautiful job with a great result. FWIW, my research suggests that your Seco JetStream parting tool holder is, in fact, a current model (CFZR 0752802DRBJET = right-hand model), and is listed by MSC and Walter Hammond at around $250, without an insert.
@pauljones3866
@pauljones3866 7 лет назад
Hi Randy, I think your rotary broach using different sizes of square broaches could be used to make an extensive set of syle A and B tap extensions. This would eliminate buying the more expensive extra long taps. Probably even better because of all the standard taps styles to choose from when needing an extra long tap. Paul

Hey Randy, Maybe you should try making bits in Carbid from carbid rod, Oh and Carbid can be machined with a good carbid end-mill.

WEll Done Randy I should try building one, ( just twice the size) cool tool
@joedrouin6957
@joedrouin6957 7 лет назад
Nice tool ! It seems to me that you'd have to re-do the alignment procedure every time you changed broaches, unless you had the exact same amount of stick out ...... ?!?
@than_vg
@than_vg 7 лет назад
I might be mistaken Randy but I think that if you were to use a broach of different length in the future you would have to readjust the offset. So the final turning will be for nothing....

Excellent video and presentation. BTW I also got a Hemingway Kit myself. Scheduled to start sometime soon. Two questions. - What percentage over size I should use to prep the hex dimension prior to heat and quench? - did you have some sort of oxide scale preventative way we can follow with? Thx.
@RRINTHESHOP
@RRINTHESHOP 2 года назад
.005" to .01" is more than enough, being a small very little change in size while heat treatment. no oxide treatment.

Randy, your mill and lathe both seem to ramp up to speed when you cut the spindles on. That would drive me absolutely crazy.Are you using VFDs on these machines?
@RRINTHESHOP
@RRINTHESHOP 7 лет назад
Yes Vfd's on both. It is all easier on the electrical parts and circuits, saves a bit on surge cost.

Did you cup the cutting end of the broach or was it just flat? Sorry if I missed it in the vid if you mentioned it.

Hey Randy, that's really nice work, we are not worthy of your teaching and experience!!! That screw looks like the ones used to connect parallel and serial cables to the I/O shield on the rear of a PC. The eccentric design will take my tiny brain a little to upload. Kindest regards. Joe. PS Well done picking up one of John's tee shirts. PPS can you give us some info on the heat treatment of the part?
@philoso377

I had the second parting tool on page 30:00 first, later fall for the first in your video. Not because I disagree with your advocating but is my limited cross slide capacity. As it use up most cross slide capacity in my mini lathe. I had the same mishaps with your first model, broken tool mount together with the insert, horrible experience. They are not bad in principle but because of poor reproduction quality control. The insert fit one side perfectly failed to fit properly on the opposite side. Good only if we are lucky and persistent in search for a quality piece. Cheers.

hi there it´s not suppose to work in the lathe!!!! the broach head must turn to make the wiggle effect working it´s way in. but very nice work regards from sweden and happy new year
@RRINTHESHOP
@RRINTHESHOP 7 лет назад
Since the broach itself turns the nutating effect is on the end of the broach. Think about it.

I'm setting myself up for ridicule here but I'm going to say something anyway. I always always always cut below center for the 1st three-quarters of a cut on a cut off. I never have problems I always use power feed. Ever I'm always right on. If I ever go even though I have problems! I hope there's someone else out there that knows what I'm talking about actually it and slowing down and pause and his worst thing you could do that's when you get chatter you can actually speed up and get rid of chatter open it up to me it cuts better below Center if it's a large obviously if it's small diameter you don't want to be below 7 because it will ride up.
