Trapped air does not cause explosions in the kiln. Moisture does. I fire enclosed spheres all the time with trapped air and never get explosions because I candle my load for approximately 10 hours. Explosions are caused when the moisture in the clay reaches the boiling point in the kiln. It turns to steam and explodes.
