How to Make a Jelly Roll Rug! Get it Super Flat without Ironing

A couple years ago we put out one of the first video tutorials on how to make a jelly roll rug and you guys went crazy for it. It has nearly 225,000 views and is one of our most popular videos of all time.
But we felt it was time for an update. First, you all HATED the music in the background. So this video only has music when I am just sewing and not when I am talking.
Second, I had some new tools to try out from Purple Hobbies to see if it would make the process any easier.
And third, I've made a BUNCH of these rugs since that first video, and I've got way more tips and tricks on how to keep it super flat without pressing the bejesus out of it only to have your lumps and bumps pop back up later to taunt you.
I know you all are still making these because we literally order the batting rolls for this almost every week, so I hope you enjoy this update.

Thank you for the tips! In addition to the ones shown, a few others I picked up along the way: apply spray sizing to the length of the strip of fabric as you are ironing the seams open, etc. (allow to the fabric strip to dry before assembly), place the bosal batting roll on a dollar store paper towel roll holder to allow it to feed easily and loved the Jerry Jelly Roll Jig with wonder clips during assembly. Did not have to iron once--laying nice and flat on my sewing room floor ever since! Enjoy :)

Thank you for showing us the dropped stitches and the "too thick" errors and what to do. Starting Sewers will automatically think they are doing something wrong and feel frustrated. Thank you. This is a project that I want to do in the near future, but I had no idea what was involved. I want to make rugs for inside my tent while camping, this looks like a great method.

I have made several JRR's but I always check for new videos, never know what you might learn. Right now I am making two runners in patriotic fabrics, one for my dining table and one for a table I have in the kitchen. I am making these WITHOUT batting and they are turning out great. I still have trouble on those curves but I stick with it and always love the results.

I've discovered that stretching the batting just slightly and shooting it with steam, then folding the edges of the fabric/batting and steaming the folded strip as I clip it together makes the coil much easier to handle when sewing. Too true on using batting scraps: only the lightest weight cotton batting will work well (just bought a roll of QD cotton so there are more batting scraps to come.

Great video! I have made a couple of placemats, and have had a little trouble catching the fabric on the underside. I discovered that the widest zigzag stitch my machine has is4.6mm. Do you think that will be an issue on a rug? I have been doing the stitch on the long strips in the middle....would it be better if I do it closer on the folded side? I have heard that makes it puffier.

Maybe you could use wider strips of fabric, and fold over more times to make the strips thicker. Or use something else on the back, like a fleece/wool type blanket. Or old clothes cut into strips, that are similar thickness and not stretchy. Like clothes that are damaged or stained. A wool coat/suit/jacket/trousers, even from a second hand shop.

I've had the ball made for several years but can't work up the energy or nerve to try to sew it. I haven't seen anyone make this rug without the wobbly part popping up so I doubt I'd be able to. Like you said, its an expensive rug and it's frustrating that it's so difficult to complete.
@bethkoch11
@bethkoch11 3 года назад
I had the same problem. I have the ball sitting in my closet. I made the rug, and the edges were very wavy. I actually took the entire thing apart and started again, trying to be extremely careful, but had just about the same result. I got very frustrated, and decided to chalk this one up to a bad (and expensive) experience. There are so many quilting projects that I've enjoyed, but this wasn't one of them. Maybe I'll get brave someday and try it again, but it's certainly not a priority. I did enjoy Stephanie's video, but this one is not for me.

Both tables should have books stacked on them to make them even to the height of the sewing machine. That should help keep the waves at bay.
