I'm looking forward to trying to make my own blade soon. One tip that was left out of the video. G10 is basically fiberglass sheet. If you are cutting or sanding on it gloves and proper breathing protection should be used. The gloves are not an absolute necessity, but the breathing protection should be a priority. Inhaling glass fibers is not a good thing. Gloves will just keep your hand from getting itchy from the glass fibers getting stuck in your skin. If carbon fiber is being used for scales breathing protection is an absolute must. The dust that carbon fiber creates is like thousands of tiny razor sharp harpoons. Once that dust makes it to your lungs it's not going to come out.
I see a lot of people asking for where to buy the steel it's 01 tool steel. Choose 30-50mm in width: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ground-Flat-Stock-Gauge-Plate-6mm-O1-Tool-Steel/331467749934?rt=nc&_soffid=5010772200&_soffType=OrderSubTotalOffer&_trksid=p5731.m3795
I got some 01 4mm thick and 40mm width. I have a Dremel and it's not really fun removing large amounts of material lol. I bought a cheap hack saw that was doa. Recently told I should buy bimetal blades for it. Going to pick some up for my next knife.
How much was the heating things? I actually got started on this a couple years ago but as i didnt have the propane, other torch, and ...... oven thing?? I gave up
@@alexmaurice4274 You can make a firepit and get some charcoal and a hair dryer or some other way of blowing air into the flame, burn the coal til it glows hot red, put the knife in, shovel some of the coal on top of the knife and then blow air onto it to really stoke the coal
I dont mean to be off topic but does any of you know of a trick to log back into an Instagram account? I was dumb forgot the account password. I would appreciate any tricks you can offer me!
You have no idea, how much I have enjoyed these tutorials. To see this going from start to finish all done without power tools, has been absolutely brilliant! this puts knife making within anyone's reach. I have subscribed! and looking forward to watching the brilliant line up of videos you have.
I’m 12 and I’m saving up for some steel and I’ve already made some knives but they are made from low carbon steel😭, but I knew they would not hold an edge from the start😂. Can’t wait to make some proper (small and possibly ugly) knives. 😂😂 but thank you sooo much for the info to help me get started.
Good start. Nothing wrong with beginning with mild steel. Cheap and no big deal if after hours of work you dont like the process of making knifes it is no big deal.
Thank you for making this video. I have been doing research for weeks trying to figure out what tools are a must have and what tools just makes things easier. I’ll be using this video as a roadmap to success for my first knife.
hahaha thank you very much! I was sure that was going to be edited out when I shot it and had forgotten about it. Then when I was going through the footage, it came up unexpectedly and made me laugh. Thought I might as well throw it in for comic relief:) Cheers!
Sorry for the bother , but im just gana get started in knife making. What steel did u buy and when did u buy it? Sorry for all the questions its just this is the 1st channel that throughly explains how to make knives by hand!
01 tool steel here's a link I recommend between 30mm and 50mm in width: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ground-Flat-Stock-Gauge-Plate-6mm-O1-Tool-Steel/331467749934?rt=nc&_soffid=5010772200&_soffType=OrderSubTotalOffer&_trksid=p5731.m3795
Hey Jeremy - I know that this series is about 3-1/2 years old now but just found it. I have been soaking up all that I can on knife making and there is a lot of really good, informative videos out there. Yours, in my opinion, is the best. I really appreciate you taking the time to bring us along for the ride and all the time you took to show newbies how to begin. All of your videos that I have seen thus far are just fantastic. Thanks and don't change a thing!!
@Marcos Garcia Ok.... I canl tell you where to find it. On Amazon they have many different colors and designs. You can buy a lot of it 1.5" x 5" (it come in diff thickness) that way you don't have much waste. Also you can buy handle pins, knife blanks and other parts there. Even files, sandpaper and epoxy. If you want a Kydex sheath, they have that material as well as screws, rivets and belt clips. Good luck.
I'm not an aspireing knife maker ! God knows I practically have ten left thumbs ( five on each hand ) , and a unhealthy helping dose of Polish Hearitige ! ALL I want ( notice I didn't say I need ) is a fairly narrow blade knife with kydex sheith . The main function would be to open snacks . I want to carry it in My front pocket of My jeans . ( That way You don't draw unwanted attention to Yourself ) ... I can't find a knife I like , most small knives are made with the crappiest metals possible , or , the most expensive materials ( I want something in the middle ... rust resistant & holds an edge well )
to how many mm do you go down the cutting edge before hardening? I've read to prevent warping and cracking you should have at least 0,6 mm Do you think this is too much/less? Best regards ;)
Jeremy, need some advice, ive made your example of beveling jig as well as another more detailed version. Both knifes Ive attempted have had issues with achieving symmetry on both sides. Appears in this video that you place knife right of the center line to bevel both sides. Any specific advise would be appreciated. What angle etc, set up measurements. Thanks!
Really cool videos, thank you very much, just a question, what´s the thickness of the steel, the handle does look a bit beefy for the overall not so large knife... I am planning to use 3mm (1/8") thick steel, would that be okay or do I need more for it to be sturdy?
Which is better to make a knife from O1 Tool Steel from a bar or sheet? IS there a difference if they are both the same size? For example 1/8" x 1 1/2" x 36" should I buy O1 Tool Steel Bar, or the same diameter of O1 Tool Steel Sheet.
I'm making my first knife right now by hand filing. How do u file the area close to the plunge and make it look clean and good? I have been filing lines at alternsting 45 degree lines but I'm having a hard time getting the plunge nice. Any tips? Love the vids!
This is excellent, thank you! One question that no channel seems to address: WHERE do you get your materials for the knife itself? Where do you buy the steel and the material for the handle? Will any hardware shop have it?
I sure would be happy to own that blade and I appreciate that you show all of us your error. So I don't know if I have the physical ability to make one or have the location (Live in a duplex no garage or shop )but you've given me some knowledge and I'm excited to start getting together the supplies. So I don't know if I missed a video but how did you make the jig for putting the bevel in with the file? And I'm on a low budget but I'm going to be purchasing items as I go but I want to get quality files! What brand and type files would you recommend as I'm sure the better the file the better cutting and the longer they'll last with proper care? Really appreciate your time and if you have explained this already I apologize
I know this is an old video, but I have questions. When filing down your bevel to your scribe line, how thick are you leaving the edge? Secondly, after HT how are you finalizing the edge? Secondary bevel? This is the part that no one seems to show in videos.
so once I get down to my 2 lines when filing the blade, there is about 0.1 mm left, I go through everything else, but what do I do when I get to sharpening? (I have a lansky deluxe guided system)
I got a question. I am right now sanding parts for my handle. Like wood and Buffalo horn. But how do I keep the part perfectly straight. When I sand it usually takes more oj one side of the part. I lay sand paper directly on the table and sand it.
Using hand tools requires immeasurable amounts of patience. It takes about three hours just to put the bevel on a knife. I would heavily recommend that anyone wanting to get into knife making to get a dremel and a LOT of cut off wheels. Sanding kits are also important
Please make a pen knife with 3.5 inch blade I would purchase it.or make one myself.and yes I think you haven’t made one it’s gonna be fun.and please make a cap for it too kinda concealed carry tool knide
maybe ill ask my dad to get me knife blanks for my birthday, I can print out knife templates as well, I can basicly have any knife I want with a bit of time, this is amazing and I just toyed around with this just a few hours ago, do I have to HT it btw?
Excellent video. I recently boughr a deer antler to use as a knife handler. It has a hole just at the thinner end, and I don't want to drille holes on the sides of the handler to put bolts. I believe the best way to fix the blade in the handles is by screwing it, but I'm not sure how to make it. Can you give any advice on the subject? Thanks, Otavio Iglesias
could you please send me a template of the knife you made in this video, it would really help me out. And by the way, the style of your video is really good. You explaining what you are doing is better than just playing music, in my opinion.
I'm just getting into trying out knife making as a hobby, question I have is what (pins) do you use to hold the handles on? And where is the best place to get them?
Please answer a question for me. I am just starting out making knives and will need to start just the way you are making this one and building up to more power tools. So the question, What angle degree do you start your grinding? and then what angle do you reduce to on your final grind?
I want to make my first knife. which grits did you use in this video? Im not quite sure which grits i should buy. Do i need everything in between or can i just buy 3 or 4 different grits and be good to go?
Hi jeremy! Question about the cutting edge. Im assuming you would have left a little bit of thickness on the edge for heat treating, so what did you use to put the final cutting edge on it with out using a grinder?
You just made me want to build a Knife even more know. it looks a lot more easier than i thought it was.. ?? tho where do I get the steel for the knife? Thank you for this video/
I'm confused. I haven't watched this video yet but after you harden and temper the blade can you sharpen with a belt sander or do you have to use like a special sharpening stone
I really liked the video but I'm not sure how to put a sharp edge on the blade after the bevel so if anyone can explain that It would be much appreciated!
i recently found a hella rusty yet cool looking machete and ive decided to try to restore it. got the rust off and removed the old handle, making a new one will certaintly be a challenge for me due to having very limited tools and no experience so far, but it will surely keep me busy at least. hope i can pull it off with some of the tips and methods used in this video!
I've been knife making for awhile and I always find vedios like this to be very help I have also found a trick when cutting the profile my cut off wheel broke one me and the whole tool was useless I used my drill press to drill holes around the profile that were very close together I was then able to put it in a vise and with hammer and a little bending I was able to free the knife and then with some files and my belt sander I was able to bring it to profile I wanted but if you use this method I advise using a drill press and brand new sharp drill bits cause you will dull the bit out as you using this method
Thank you for the information on how to get started I've been watching lots of videos yours is the one that truly makes me think I can really get started and see if I can do it
The drilling part is where i get demotivated. I want to see someone using a handheld driller because i don't have the sophisticated driller that is being used in this video.
