How to make a Kumiko sled for the table saw | DIY Woodworking

Today I want to show you how to make a table saw sled used for making hexagonal Kumiko. It's an incredibly easy DIY table saw sled that is versatile and can easily be stored in a small shop.
Making the cross-laps is the first step in making kumiko panels, and this sled offers repeatable results and a lot of versatility.

This is super helpful! I just got my own table saw and I've been thinking about giving kumiko a try. I'll have to add making this sled to my list.

Glad to see a new video, it's been a while! I subscribed after seeing one of your kumiko videos a while back and have been patiently waiting for some new content. Well worth the wait I'd say. You're very clear with your instructions, the production quality has been consistently great, and it's awesome to see some very unique woodworking content done well. Thanks for the DIY sled plan, can't wait to try this out and assemble some beautiful kumiko works soon!

I'm curious why you would make such a nice sled with a warped piece of plywood? I really like your designs by the way. Why dado in the runner? Also. I started using these runners a few years ago. UHMW is an amazing component to make smooth running jigs. I double stick tape the UHMW and use the fence as a guide to set the sled onto the runner. The run screws in. That way, if I ever need to move it, easy peasy. Keep on making sawdust!!!! I love your work. Subscribed.

I didn't actually realize this was very warped; The fences end up adding some bracing so I wasn't super concerned. And yes, I started to use UHMW in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7UJvMey6BdA.html and never went back. Really appreciate the kind words!

The first cut has the fence behind the piece to prevent blowout. The second cut has the fence in front of the piece being cut. I would expect with blow out with many woods. Your thoughts please.

There's a little bit of blowout like you said, but it isn't bad. Thankfully you can definitely use the front of that fence. I just don't like to have my fingers where I can't see them, and feel like that when I use the front part of that fence.

@@BikeCityWoodworks Thanks for the info. You're right, the far fence could be a bit of a reach unless you're really tall, and I'm not. We can always use a second piece as a backer board and save the skin.

A good clear video. How did you decide on the pitch for the 60-degree cuts? Do you only use one pitch?

Thanks for your question! I only use a single pitch of 2" because if I go much smaller, the infill pieces get really small and hard to work with. Technically, your pitch can be anything you want, and my last sled (you can see it in my mini kumiko lanterns video) had about 4 or 5 pitches cut into the base. However, I always found myself coming back to the 2" pitch so I just cut that one in my new sled.

What is the kerf of the blade you used to make the main kerf? Looks like 1/8 inch from video.

That's right, it's 1/8". But it can be anything, as long as your strips are the same thickness :)

Hi BCW: What is "pitch" new term to me? why is the fence used to set the angle? why not the blade or kerf to set the angle? Hope you can answer Cheers

Hi there! Pitch is just a different way to measure. Instead of measuring "on-center" like you might with house framing, it's just measuring left-side to left-side. I'm not sure it's all that important, but it's how most of the books outline their processes. Hope this helps!

@@BikeCityWoodworks Different? How so, please clarify. Pitch was a measuring method used by typewriters in the past. Framing is laid out from one side to the other at 16" centres.... where a 2x4 is nailed. It seems unimportant to you.... please send some book titles please. Does not help much.
