That is why it's important to bevel the sides of the frame. Adding the bevel will help in keeping the painting level and even over time.

I believe it’s because you need the space to drill the screws.

I had to stagger them to be able to install the 3in screws on both sides of the braces.

you only bevel one side, the side that faces the canvas so that the canvas is not being pulled across the wood which will leave a noticeable ridge during the painting. there's a lot wrong with this video but she got that correct. This is a perfect example of someone who is better at marketing herself than demonstrating actual expertise in the craft. a bit like ana white does with wood working. this is an OK starting point but her techniques are not good because she doesn't actually understand the construction of a frame. that's why she talked about putting glue in the screw hole. I don't want to be a hater when so many people are very happy with her video but she left out a lot of details and some of her choices are simply wrong. always attach the bracing to the edge before screwing in the ends. if you put the end screws in first, the edge's can not be pulled tight by the screws and attaching the ends last will help make your frame square. look at the video at 5:25 and you can see she has created a nice bow in her wood. (all her bracing appears pretty twisted earlier in the video which makes getting the frame square extremely difficult) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rdgGy0hZOe4.html the screws she added in the miters should also run the other direction so the screw is not being driven into the spot where the end screw for the bracing will be. unprimed canvas often rots. it doesn't accept paint in the same way and can make pigments fade. it also is more difficult to paint on. if you're spending the time to make a canvas over 20 sq feet and the time required to create art of that size you might want to really use quality materials and quality craftsmanship. you don't skimp on the foundation when you're putting up a 5000 sq ft house. The quality of the canvas itself also matters here. that canvas does not look high quality by the way it's fraying near the cuts. this would be partially alleviated by priming with gesso. there's more but I've already voiced an unpopular opinion. this video is more about views than demonstrating a quality custom canvas construction.

You could bevel both edges where the canvas will stretch over it.

Get the measurements and have the pieces cut at Home Depot. That’s what I did and it came out pretty nice.

yes, primed canvas, the heavier and smoother the better. unprimed canvas does not take paint well, is hard to paint on and will sometimes rot.

The materials cost around $70. (That only includes the wood, canvas, glue, screws, and sanding blocks.)

I was taught to put rabbit skin glue on then gesso in art school. =)
