i've been procrastinating on doing this because I was thinking I'd need drainage pipe and caps because that's all I've seen people using. It never occurred to me to just use discarded containers with lids. Now I have a reason to clean all the empty peanut butter jars in my fridge. Thanks!
Awesome! I would do this if I wanted to save space for my compost pile. My grandpa always had a good sized area near the garden for composting. It wasnt even a heap, just flat ground. He left a shovel near it. We would go outside, scoop a portion of dirt out, then drop all the scraps from dinner in the hole and cover it up. Every couple weeks he would till the area. He had the same compost area for 40 years and that was the richest soil I have ever personally seen!
Nice tip! Helps with the kitchen waste during summertime, i have no problem filling my bins 😂. This would give me some extra place. Most garden waste i throw down as mulch unless its some kind of weed with seeda or the tendency to reroot itself.
@@KhangStarr Sadly we don't have Home Depot over here in Switzerland😅 But I have access to 15l food grade buckets. Sadly only with snap on lid, screw would be better i guess. But they are free. Also perfect kratky material
With shrimp heads and shells it would be a powerhouse. Great idea. Soldering iron will be a lot easier, though a lot stinkier. Don't breathe the fumes.
This is exactly what I came looking for so thank you! I’m just starting my first garden. Do you ever remove the compost to spread it or does it simply move out of the bottom and into the bed? Thanks!!
Thanks again for sharing your ideas and experience, I have a question though, since it is gonna be a plastic container, can one use something not so transparent as the one on your video? Like protein powder 3L container which is black or blue ? it's kind of foodsafe ...
I put one coffee can worm bed in a 4x8 raised bed last year. When I turned the soil this spring, there was so much worm casting under the surface near that worm bed that it glistened in the sun.
@@thegreatest3651 "Can." The 33.9oz plastic Folgers containers with a snap-on lid. I just drill 1/2" holes all thru them, de-burr the holes, bury them 7/8 deep and then make layered compost beds inside with peat moss, shredded paper/cardboard, coffee grinds and bio refuse. Dump a couple containers of red wigglers on top and close it up. Works like a charm and they don't need much refuse to thrive. Did 3 of them this year in same bed.
@@jmakc3541 only problem ive had with them type of setups is it goes anaerobic too often and becom es a breeding ground for mites, fungses, diseases etc
Noticed that some of the compost containers are in containers (lol). When do you add worms into those containers, or are you just relying on it composting down?
