I made one of my own nightstands with the instructions you gave and it came out pretty well. I painted the legs black though, so that there's more contrast between the colours. That's a funky table! Digging it! How much weight can you put on that top part of the shelf? And was that a jig in the beginning that turned a circular saw into a table saw??
If your using screws with full treads, you should drill out the the outer layer that way the screw grips on the inner piece and then clamps the outer layer too it. If you don't then there could be a slight gab between the two piece and it could break. :(
