How to make a Modern Plywood Bench w/ blue concrete legs (or a Coffee Table) || DIY

This video shows how to make a modern DIY bench with blue concrete legs and a plywood top. This is a fairly simple concrete and woodworking project, and you could easily change the dimensions to make a modern coffee table, side table, or even a dining table the same way. The form for the concrete legs is made from melamine and I used ½” plywood for the bench top. For an extra decorative touch, I also cut strips of curly maple for the outer layers of the stacked plywood top.
As usual, I used a glass fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC) mix for the concrete. GFRC is incredibly strong without any additional reinforcement, beyond the alkali resistant glass fibers. Thus, it was the perfect material to use for this style of bench legs.
This is a remote bench design collaboration with my friend Jonny, over at Jonny Builds. Make sure to check out Jonny’s bench video after you watch this.

Sorry, late comer to this video. A possible solution for your troweling issue: Tape off exposed fiberboard edges and use a moist to wet rubber float. If you have a flat hand sander with a rubber grip base, you could use that instead of investing in another tool.

Are you using a float or a trowel for primary finishing of the concrete? A magnesium float is the proper tool to use to put the primary finish on the concrete. Let the concrete set up for about an hour, then with a little bit of water on the surface, you can work the surface to a smooth finish with the float. Also, a little vibration during the initial pour will consolidate the concrete better, and improve the strength of the final pour. A random orbit sander, applied parallel to the base of the form, on the side of the form will consolidate the concrete. This will drive any air bubbles up and out of the mix, but it will also drive the aggregate (or reinforcing fibers) down to the bottom. Just remember, a little goes a long way.
@modustrial
@modustrial 5 лет назад
Thanks for the tips. I have a float, but it was too big to fit between the edges of the form, so I was just using a trowel

Hi, what are the ingrédients for the concrete ? Do you use concrete mix or only concrete + Sand + fiber ? Thanks.

GFRC doesnt like being troweled. You have to wait a LONG time for it to be troweled smooth and nice. The mix you want is called ECC (Engineered Concrete Composite) from Buddy Rhodes.

What is the difference? I was troweling the face coat only (no fibers)....is it the high cement content or something?
@monsterbarbell8306
@monsterbarbell8306 5 лет назад
@@modustrial yes the high cement. Look on Buddys site for the differences. Its a stronger mix than GFRC, you can also full pour it and because it has smaller fibres in the mix you arent in fear of exposing the larger fibres used in GFRC.

Thanks, that makes sense. I usually work with fishstone so I'll ask if they have an equivalent.

@@modustrial i know Tom Fischer and my mate is the UK distributor of Fishstone so i know the products well. Ive used most of them. The product youll be told about is Super Six. Its a very good mix. Just ask Tom how to go about making it an ECC.

You should make a modern industrial back yard fire pit!!!

I actually did a concrete fire table with Mike Montgomery.....that video is on the Modern Builds channel. I don't have a backyard since I live in a condo, but I am trying to find a suburban friend who could use one for next summer :)

You could have just embedded the bolts in the concrete and they would have been hidden.

Why not mound the concrete and use another sheet of of the white to screen down to the top of the form.. leave on til it dries??
@modustrial
@modustrial 5 лет назад
You could do that but it would be difficult to get the exact right amount so it's flat, I think. Plus, I want to learn how to hand trowel a surface :)

It would be pretty cool to see a countertop for a desk or something that was black with red marble like effect throughout.
