This is epic in its own way basically being a passive gimbal. To make this same one an active gimbal, you can basically use a small HDD or CD drive BLDC motor and put it beneath the centre PVC cylinder where the phone is. The shaft can be put on a bearing with the top or bottom with a support PVC and it'll act as its own counterweight when the motor is switched on using a driver. This could remove the bottom redundant motor and could give a much better stabilization as well.
maybe, those searching for an economical solution, don't have the same funds as someone like you, and hopefully, don't have the some snobby attitude as you either. Or maybe like me, who does have the funds, enjoy the fact that people come up with homemade ideas, to outprice the rip off markets we live in. Sorry you find creativity so confusing.

I love this. If only you can add a 3rd axis & include a gyro for stability...this would be perfect. Edit: After looking up on different types of gimbals, I found that this is a mechanical stabilizer with gimbal.

If you powered the motor, the gyroscopic force of it would resist outside motion. The same principle that keeps you upright on a bicycle while the wheels are turning but it is much harder when you are not rolling to balance.

I'd weight camera an unit an experiment to getting bottom counter weight as light as possible, an still function at it's best. Then before gluing bottom handle cap, for bottom handle dust cover, cut it down so part covers bottom but shorter up handle for more hand area, or leave bottom cap long an just glue it short up handle by not pushing parts more than quarter inch together. Cover handle with material of choice for comfort an utility in better grip under different conditions (more wet or dry). Then, here's a lesson for all you camera buffs an you tubers, from this old motorcyclist! I have several palm sized an bigger balls (that didn't sound exactly right OR exactly right?) of CLAY and BEES WAX. While I'm watching you tube (I don't have tv) etc I KNEED these BALLS IN BOTH HANDS (my throttle an clutch hands) to help make an keep them stronger (helps with all area of fingers, palms,wrist muscles, an elbow control being good for vids). While working clay or bees wax in hand by steady squeezing fingers move hand , wrist an arm in different positions until you get your burn on! An stronger hands pay off in many other areas for the ladies other than strawberry jam jar openings! Always kneed clay then when too soft move to bees wax. All the measurements are in the video so you really don't need a list as much as you need to just look at the caliper they're measuring with. Its all right there, right down to where they show you the base cap size that's stamped on the side of the center/base cap. Js, its all right there for you to make your own list even if its been 2 yrs ago lol

3 things 1 great build 2 would put a bolt through the outer ring and handle, not going to trust just some glue 3 power the damn motor, mount an old HDD plater to it, put the battery in that empty battery sized chamber above the motor and create a true gyrostabilizer, so damn close and fell just short of the finish line.

Hi Sir, I suggest you to attach the motor in opposite way. And just attach a metal wheel to the motor and power it. Hence it will work like gyroscope balancing your gimbal.....
