How To Make A PVC Pump!

In this project you'll learn how to make a customizable PVC hand pump that will create vacuum suction, pump water, or compress air.
A pre-requisite to making the pump will be 2 homemade check valves. You can learn how to make these cheap PVC check valves here:
• How To Make a One-Way ...
My friend NightHawkInLight made another version of a vacuum pump. Check it out here:

WARNING:
Power tools, like a table saw, pose risks of serious injury. Adequate training and experience are required before operating. The results and claims of this pump are based solely on my personal experiences with the one demonstrated in the video. Individual results may vary. The pump is a simple design and not made, or claimed, to be used in any heavy duty operations, or relatively high pressures. Use of this content is at your own risk.
Music By: Jason Shaw (TU-ForeverBelieve) www.audionautix.com
Project Inspired By:
This is an original design, based off a picture I once found on a google image search. (I haven't been able to find the picture since)
Project History & More Info:
I've wanted to build a PVC water pump for awhile, but the check valves were around $10.00 each. That seemed a little steep for a PVC build, so I made my own, which you can see in a different project.
I was inspired on the pump piston and chamber by a picture I saw on a google image search by someone who used the 1-1/4" and 1" sizes of tubes, and he mentioned he cut the grooves for the O-rings on a table saw. That was a new idea to me and gave me the inspiration to put this together.
I'm also planning to use this piston design in future projects that require pneumatic and hydraulic pistons.
In my testing, the valves work great with air and water. I didn't have any gauges to test the strength of the vacuum so can't say how strong the vacuum would be, but it certainly does create one.
While there are some special tools used to create this pump (table saw and forester bit), I believe with a little creativity the pump could be made just as effectively without them, making this a simple and duplicatable design.

This pump works EXCELLENT with basic windmill pumps (using crankshaft mechanical leverage arms) too. You can even use this with 'high-reach' windmills, and drive this pump with simple counter-balance weights at the ground level. Excellent video.

Very nice job. :-) I made a very high pressure version pump a long time ago using rigid, thick wall aluminum tubing, using ball bearings / springs for my check valves. I spun the tube with a very small round file(rat-tail) held firmly against it to create the perfect shape groove for the o-ring to go in. One thing to note, the vaseline is very bad for rubber, go with the KY(LOL), or silicone grease.
@TheKingofRandom
@TheKingofRandom 10 лет назад
Thanks for the tip! I've heard that from a few people, so it's probably correct!
@electronicsNmore

You have a very nice channel, and well made videos. :-) If you have a bag of those rubber o-rings, and they were inexpensive, then just use vaseline and swap them out when they go bad.
@TheaDragonSpirit
@TheaDragonSpirit 9 лет назад
Just use vegetable oil. Cheap as hell. But in all honesty you don't really need it on this kind of device. It will not wear down much if at all with the water in it.
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 9 лет назад
Fortunately many o-rings today are made from neoprene. Vaseline will not harm them. You only have to worry about less expensive rubber o-rings.

think about how much better it would be if you sanded the inside of the other pipe lets say up to 1000 grit to get is real smooth. might be overkill but it would make the O-rings last much longer and make for much better seal. I bought one of those cheap cast iron hand water pumps and tore it down and did a lot of fine finishing and polishing and it tripled its ability so I see no reason why thing would be be the same here. Great video. I am actually thinking about making one with bigger pipe. to get more volume

Fantastic, I love the modularity and the valve design! Any idea how much vacuum this design will pull? I'd love to build something that'd hit close to 30" Hg, but not sure how realistic it is to expect PVC tubes and improvised ball checks to hit anywhere near that.

+MrFiremandingo - The vacuum pulling the water column up can't be greater than the atmospheric pressure at the bottom of the column, or about 14.7 pounds per square inch. Thus, the maximum lift would be about 33.9 feet (10 meters) at sea level. (14.7 psi ≈ 33.9 ft of water @ 4°C) Any more than that, the water in the column would turn to vapor at room temperature due to the low pressure ("cavitate") and no suction would occur.
