Really nice result! You think this could be done with foam core to make it lighter?
@KrakenCasting
@KrakenCasting 3 года назад
You could, you'd just need something soft around it because foam core is so brittle.

Good timing. Not just for Halloween but I was just thinking of trying to make a martial arts practice sword based on your bow-making techniques. It's not much different but I hadn't given much thought to the handle. Also I don't know how impact resistant it may be, but the style I'd be practising is not fast-pace. Not like kendo or anything. Closer to tai chi. If you combine this video with the Ghost Bow material, you could make some kind of lazer blade type weapon. Sanding it could possibly diffuse the light and create a more even spread, but it probably wouldn't look as neat when the light is off and you may need a brighter light for the effect. You could slip in a piece of lighting gel in front of the LED to give it a different color, too. That's got my creative juices goin' :P Glad to see you're posting again, btw.

Hello Nick! I have been watching your videos for a few years, now. I had a hard time making the PVC bows because it takes at least your size to apply the correct amount of pressure to control your jig after the pipe is hot enough. I like the new design for your pipe flattening jig. It looks like something I could actually use. I also love your flintknapping videos and am thinking about trying that, too. I love that you use materials that aren't expensive to make your projects. Otherwise, I couldn't even afford to try them. I hope you and your family are well! Keep up the good work!
@BackyardBowyer
@BackyardBowyer 3 года назад
Thank you! This is my favorite jig now as it’s small and portable, can be used for 3/4” and 1/2” bows and works well with clamps or with body weight. I’ve got to make one of these again!

Hey Nick, I was trying to make this for a friend of mine, but I want able to get the pipe to melt right. I spent probably an hour with a heat gun and then 10 minutes with a blowtorch and neither worked well. I’m not sure what to do?
@captainpirate5694
@captainpirate5694 3 года назад
What heat gun are you using?
@spencerbrotherson9061
@spencerbrotherson9061 3 года назад
Nick! First off, glad you're back. I found your stuff back in about 2013 and have been sub'ed ever since. I've been watching and liking everything of yours that's popped up since you decided to start posting again. The internet is truly a darker place without your presence. Anyway, Question: have you ever tried solvent welding the tips of a pipe when you clamp them like that? I haven't done much heat forming of PVC, but it seems like if you coated the inside of the last couple of inches of the pipe with PVC glue before you clamped it the solvent would bond the two sides and keep it from gapping like that when you cut and finished it. I don't know how the glue would react to the heat, so you might have to apply it quickly after you took it off the heat gun and before you put it in the jig to clamp it... do you think that would be possible, or would that cool the PVC too much before you tried to form it? If it worked, you might be able to do the same thing to the tips of your bows. Just a thought...

Hey Nick, do you think a hair dryer would produce enough heat to do this project?
@BackyardBowyer
@BackyardBowyer 3 года назад
The hair dryers I have tried did not get hot enough to heat PVC. An electric or gas stovetop would work if you don’t have a heat gun.
