How did you attach the fireplace itself? Did you have to build a box for the floor then frame it out and attach it? We bought a mantel on FB Marketplace and have been struggling to figure out how to set the fireplace insert up and frame it out to flush with the sides of the mantel. We were wondering to build a hearth but I think I like how you did yours better.
I hit a roadblock on a design then I came across your video - a great find for me! Thanks for sharing. I also uploaded a 6 second video on my piece (see my page), it's 80% finished, I just need to build the top piece. ... can't wait to see it with wood burning!
Here's the plan you can purchase for the fireplace mantel woodenitbenice.ca/products/classic-coastal-fireplace-mantel-plan If you're not a woodworker, you can find a local business to build it for you with these plans
I really like the approach that you are taking and can see the amount of effort that you put into this channel. I look forward to watching your other videos. Keep up the excellent work!
Excellent job!! Thank for sharing!! What I'm trying to do is make the fireworks i have taller. So I just need to add your frame to my fireplace. I think that will work. What do you think?
It's hard to say without seeing what you have. We offer video call advice sessions if you're interested. Here's a link - woodenitbenice.ca/collections/woodworking-advice-sessions
I have a 1998 fireplace surround and fell in love with this style is there a way to retrofit this one over the one I have now. It has a 7” deep mantle, 60” tall, 70” at the widest. The fix box is standard size with 12” tiles surrounding the box. Would I have to remove all the old one or would this be able to slide over it in place. Also would there be room to run electrical sockets? Mine is also a corner fireplace.
Hi Pattie. Yes, this fireplace mantel can be adapted by a local custom woodworker for your needs. The existing mantel would have to be removed. There's likely space to run electrical so you can include an electrical outlet. Here's a link to the plans you can purchase - woodenitbenice.ca/collections/woodworking-plans When you look for a quality woodworker, I'd stay away from businesses that operate without their own website (e.g., use Facebook). I hope this helps
I like everything about it except the paint. I like stained wood, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Super job thanks for the tips. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya
Wow . . . just wow! I found your channel just in time. We're taking out a pellet stove insert and the zero clearance fireplace and replacing it with a gas fireplace. This is the style that I love!
No, the plans show how to build the fireplace mantel with the curve. If you modify the header, it would be easier to build straight. Here's a link to the plans if you'd like to buy them - woodenitbenice.ca/collections/all
I just posted a video to show the details of how to install a fireplace mantel. I hope this is helpful for you ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VAT2r_WjWXQ.html Cheers, Scott.
Hola soy lucy de costa rica gracias x videos tan interesantes tengo una pregunta cómo sabe uno cuánto mide los laterales de una escalera para que no quede empinada
I really like your asthetic - very tasteful and very appealing for the space without being too much "matching tie and handkerchief" if you know what I mean. The time you spent designing it was certainly worthwhile. Not sure if you've ever considered it but you have quite an eye for interior design. Sorry - I don't mean to sound so fawning, but it's refreshing to see balance - while the mantle certainly draws attention, it doesn't take over the room. Really impressive.
Thanks for the great video! How did you finish the front edge of the mantel top? It looks like you were using a piece of 3/4" plywood but I can't see the layers in the finished product. Any info would be really helpful.
Aaron Scott I used iron-on edge banding. It's a product that is a thin veneer with heat-activated glue on the back. It is attached using a clothes iron to activate the glue. Have you used it before?
Home Improvement Woodworking I haven't used it but it seems pretty straight forward. How does it hold up over time and is it easy to paint? Thanks again
It will hold up well if it's attached properly. Here's a video of a plywood table where I show how to apply the edge banding. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0O1abWfg-CQ.html It primes and paints well. I hope this helps.
Question, is there a reason why someone shouldn't use MDF for a mantel? I can't think of a reason why. I see yourself and others using poplar or maple. Thoughts on material choices?? I want to build one like yours. Thanks,
Hi Alvin. There are a few reasons I avoid MDF when I build most things: - cutting and shaping MDF creates a lot of fine dust - much worse than wood or plywood (wood dust is a carcinogen) - MDF tends to warp more than plywood on horizontal surfaces - MDF can move with humidity changes whereas plywood won't - MDF doesn't paint well with water-based finishes as it can swell - MDF can be fragile and chip easier than other building materials - MDF doesn't hold screws well - MDF doesn't hold well with glue as it can just flake apart In short, I'm not a fan of MDF. I use plywood because it's strong, stable, and holds well with glue and screws.
Lol. The best I can do is offer to sell you the plans and you have a local woodworker make it for you (the link is in the video description. I'm glad you like it! Scott
The sprayer is an HVLP conversion spray gun I used while training at a furniture finisher. I how use a Fuji Spray HVLP as you can see in this paint spray video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AGof3BywLvg.html
The panels with the rounded edges are separate pieces of wood. I built the frames first. Then I needed to cut a rabbit (a recessed area) for the panel to fit into. I used a router bit to do this, so when It gets to the corners, it cuts a 1/4 circle at the corner. Instead of chiseling out the corner to make it square, it's faster to round the corner of the panel that gets glued into place. Does that make sense?
Great Video Scott, I Appreciate You, And Thank You For Sharing. I'am New To Woodworking, And Could Us All The Help I Can Get. Again Thank You, And I'll Be Following Along. And I Subscribed.
