From my research on this topic, the lights need to be heat producing (in other words, not LEDs), such as Halogen. It is the heat that makes the steam/vapor raise more straight up, rather than billowing around and just looking like fog. I do respect your somewhat unnecessary use of Arduino :)

I can confirm this to be correct. Just tested with a mini ultrasonic humidifier module and a lighter. Vapor is definitely being raised at a faster rate and does not drop down anywhere as much as it does without the proximity of heat. Additionally, it becomes significantly rarer / less dense and the spread is greatly reduced. Given the fact that the smoke doesn't descend after a second, and it's density isn't so uniform, this would definitely create a more realistic effect. Although, I believe that keeping the LEDs would be a good idea if nichrome wire is added to the mix (it generates heat when current is being passed through it, but naturally it'd consume more power). High-powered LED chips (10W+ with color temperature ranges within 2000-3000K) might work as well but you'd have to block the excess light with something.. and I'd definitely work on making the that code more dynamic if "neopixels" are expected to contribute to the realism. Definitely a fun project that can be taken quite far though.

Interesting suggestion joeny1980, and thanks for the follow up Vex. Didn't think of using heat to waft the vapour. I like the idea of a mix of the two, as AFAIK you can't programmatically flicker the halogen light.

@@BenjaminEagan the commercial fireplaces that use this feature, as far as I can see the bulbs don't flicker. I thought it was kinda odd that they were using halogen, but realized it's because of the heat they produce.

Heres a diy build with real realistic flame: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oqCXNDXzC90.htmlsi=14_ZxTLmPik2rX1D

i know this is 2 years old, but do you think that this could be applied to cosplay or even like stage production to simulate a fire in someone's hand? modifying the mister using tubing and running the tubing and wiring for the LEDs through your sleeve and having a water source inside a backpack in a locking leak-proof Tupperware (with a hole drilled for the mister tubing with caulk or some other sealing agent). i know competing light can be a big problem for visibility though so maybe not

Oh for sure, there are some very bright LEDs you can get and they'll pickup any mist at all. I think I saw a few cosplay versions actually while building this.

another few years old but I was thinking of a ghost rider cosplay, if you could produce the mist around the neck and have the lights also shine from the chest/neck then it could look pretty cool... I just dont know how it works really enough to say how you would do it. I was thinking maybe one of those water bladder backpacks that could go under the outfit but again no idea if thats even possible? did you manage to achieve the fire in your hand you were on about?

Please run it by me again, what is the reason or use of the arduino? As far as I can see an on/off switch would perform the same function.

Lets you animate the LEDs in a way a switch doesn't, but it's not doing much

I look for everything to make my own, here, common mystake, no kernels to divide the flow to make realistic flames.

Thanks for sharing! The 3D printed material can be made from anything right? It’s just a convenient way to attach all the components and allow the system to have airflow? Could this be made from plywood or something? I’m a woodworker and don’t have immediate access to a 3D printer or a lot of time to complete this project. I can basically make any shape out of wood though and create my own airtight seals so I plan on going that route if it is possible.

Yeah there’s nothing magic there, anything with a manifold for the mist and LEDs attached, and a slot for the fan will work juuust fine!

I’d love to see the wood version if you do make it! I wish I could make the shapes I wanted out of wood.

how many decibels is the ultrasonic?

Ben, does using the piece you made for the top with : _/ \_ reduce or eliminate the spitting from the fogger?
@BenjaminEagan

Yup, that's the main purpose - to eliminate the splattering and focuses the mist.

LOL OK damn you! You made my Alexa turn on every damn light in my house!! NO JOKE!!! I had to pause the video and have her set all the lights back to what I had them set at, then had her turn them off!! Thanks a lot!! Now on to the rest of the video. LOL

Any one had joy with leds? know you need the air convection from halogens, but now being discontinued, 2018 in UK

@@BenjaminEagan Ah ok yea seen the one with the log, and led strips. hmm as many said due to heat. Looking at making a outlet rack cut out, 400mm long 15mm wide with spacers, using 12v computer fan to push it out. Led mr16`s to aluminate. As hologens, becoming obsolete in Uk.

I'm actually impressed, I'm searching for ways to do something like this and add it to a adapt my gas fire as I want to stop using gas. Im trying to search for and buy the necessary components of an Opti myst fire.
