In this video learn how to make a ring from a steel nut. This is a second version of making a ring from a nut. The previous version had a flat face, this version is completely smooth. With a little bit of elbow grease, some time and minimal tools you can make this super cool ring.
*Some other tools that can be used if you don't have a belt grinder is a portable belt sander, wood working stationary belt sanders or disc sanders, mini grinder (flap disc or grinding disc) or get a second drill and use a disc sanding adapter with some rough sand paper (this is probably the cheapest option).
Here is the previous version of making a ring from a nut:

All I do is to get the size stainless nut and corresponding bolt - assemble and lock the nut with either another of the same size, or a hex coupler - put in a vice mounted drill and then work handheld with a fine zirconium flap disc on a mini grinder. The softness of the pad allows you to work it relatively easily to a bevel. Once you've got the finished outer profile it's then a case of polishing from 180 through to 4K grit wet and dry; then you can vice mount and drill/ream the inner. Get a rod and wrap with wet and dry or emery and work the inside accordingly. All in all, about 30 mins work. Hope this helps.

Just wanted to say thank you. I couldn't find the perfect ring from any store. I'm getting married and I need to find that special ring that you "Try" to keep forever. I watched your video and knew this was for me. I made one ring on the first try it came out amazing! I went 120 - 3000 Sand paper. The last few 2500 - 3000 made a huge difference. I also used a table grinder to slim down the ring (Along with a belt sander). Saved me hours of work that way. Wish I could show you a picture. Thank you. - Timothy Brown

Starting on one for me and one for the wife this weekend! Though I do have the added advantage of a drill press and will just drill out the threads, then cover a bit with tape to hold the ring and work the light sanding and polishing using the drill press... Thank you for the great idea! Tremendous job!

You're an amazing friend to put so much work and effort into making the ring the shiniest (mirror-est?) possible. And, then, to put the extra work into making an equally specially-unique presentation box as well. My dad made me a ring like the first one you showed, before he died. He ended up having to make a gap in the middle of the ring, in order for it to fit my ring finger. I still have it and cherish it.You'r video helped me to appreciate the effort he put into my ring. Thank you for that.

Great job ! I watched your other ring vid a while back. Just interesting watching. Theres something about wearing a ring like that you made that makes it a priceless piece in your own mind. Great something to do one boring afternoon. Just think of all the people sitting on the couch when they could be out in the shop/garage making a piece like this. It sure polished into a amazing shine. Impressive ! Need to stamp something around one. A lord of the rings type of stamping all the way around. Cheers

You seem to be having alot of fun... And I know it's a hobby, and you're not in a hurry.. but: if you were to take and leave removing the "threads" till the last or close to the last step, you could use a a long bolt and "jamnut" configuration to hold the work piece... By doing that, you could not only increase the speed of manufacture, but the overall finish and craftsmanship of the work.. By holding firmly, securely, your accuracy would improve dramatically... Try it once or twice... You'll be amazed... Once the part is near completion, remove the theads, and polish... You're done..!!

Very nice you should be very happy with your workmanship. I made my wife's and my wedding rings 33 years ago out of monel nuts. Back then all I could do is drill them out to the basic size and used rifle files and cut a diamond shape on the top with a similar style to your first ring.
@VaracolacidVesci
@VaracolacidVesci 3 года назад
To make the nuts round is easier if you start with it before removing the inner part. Put 2 nuts into a fitting screw, locking them to each other. Put the screw in a drill, you can use a vise or press to lock the drill, turn it on and use a file to round the nuts.

I made 2 rings with your tutorial and had a couple of grey spots developing on the polished surface on the rings after couple of weeks (it is not dirt. Tried to scrub it off vigorously). Just wanted to ask for a cause (material, moisture, insufficient heat treating or any other possible cause) or should I just ignore it and try to polish it again. I'm new to this metalworking bussines so naturally I have no clue.

nice ring and video. honestly though you don't need to use a dozen different kinds of sanding grits for one ring. choose a basic coarse grit, a medium and a finishing grit. this will save you money and time. but again, nice work.

I’ve seen in the comments that a lot of people have asked for the size of the nuts to use. I’d also like to know. I’ll either have to order online or ask someone to go and get them for me. It makes it very hard if I don’t know what size to tell them to get or what to order. Please tell us the best size/sizes to use. Thanks for a great tutorial

@ededmund5685
@ededmund5685 5 лет назад
hey you can buy a low profile nut,,,, it's caller a JAM NUT ? A jam nut is a low profile type of nut, typically half as tall as a standard nut. It is commonly used as a type of locknut, where it is "jammed" up against a standard nut to lock the two in place. It is also used in situations where a standard nut would not fit. Ed
