Great story, Bruce! As a sentimental guy myself, I know how hard it can be to say goodbye to a familiar place and close a chapter of your life at the drop of a hat. I always like the mix of history with the drink recipes. All the best!

I have my own "version" of this drink, spawning from my two favorites - I call it the Highlander: two ounces Of Meyers Dark rum one ounce of Drambuie the juice of one lemon wedge and one lime wedge two dashes of Angostura bitters one to two ounces ginger ale one lemon peel twist Mix liquors, liqueurs, fruit juices and bitters; pour into a double rocks glass filled with ice; add ginger ale to taste; garnish with lemon peel twist.

Great video. Still remember my first Rusty Nail April, 1970. While in Vietnam I had pulled courier duty and had a layover in DaNang. I was Army and didn’t have many comforts. The Air Force on the other hand knew how to live. The set me up with a place to sleep, showed me where to eat and where to drink. Went to the club and saw they had Scotch. So I’m sitting there drinking Scotch and an airman comes over and we start talking. Tells me about this drink called a Rusty Nail so I tried it. Was really good. Flash forward to 1971 and I’m home in Michigan. My dad and I went out for a drink and I told him about the Nail. Order 2 but the bartender didn’t recognize the drink. Told him the ingredients and he said you want a Knucklehead. Regardless of the name a great drink.

Bruce: I'm sure you've heard of this, but I just made a "Mandarine Old Fashioned" using Mandarine Napoleon. Here's the recipe: 1 oz Mandarine Napoleon 1 oz Bourbon Whiskey 3 dashes Angostura Bitters (I use their orange bitters) orange peel for garnish Put the bitters and orange peel in an old-fashioned glass with two ice cubes, add two ounces of Mandarine Napoleon and two ounces of Bourbon and stir. It's quite nice!
@BarTalkCocktails

Quick and easy... The Mandarine Napoleon combined with the bourbon makes for one zesty bite. My kind of drink. Cheers, William.

b7camp Well that escalated rather quickly. I don't think you need to be an "expert" on something if the video clearly indicates that he's using Scotch. You're not a dumbass, you just don't pay attention. I'm also a dumbass for proving a point to a random person on the internet

Man we need a whole series thats just nothing but the first half of this video. Put a drink in your hand, some lounge music in the background, dim those goddamn lights and just go on about the old days for like twenty minutes a pop. A+ companionship for sullen, solitary, locked-down drinking sprees.

Great video Bruce! I’m a younger guy and learned about the rusty nail because it’s made by the main character in “better call Saul” While I love the original rusty nail I also love to sub bourbon for scotch (that’s the American in me!) and mix it with the drambuie . If you’ve never tried it, it’s spicy and the sweetness of the dram really balances out bourbon

Manhattan is a great drink. Is there a drink you've invented that you'd recommend after a long day?
@BarTalkCocktails
@BarTalkCocktails 7 лет назад
+Crafty Vegetarian83 I like my whisky and gin, so I often start with that as a base and because I have a well stocked bar, I experiment with some crazy combinations. Today I'm enjoying 1.5 oz. gin, 1/3 oz. St. Germain, 1/3 oz. Hpnotiq, 1/3 oz. Cointreau - In a shaker glass, stir all ingredients over ice and strain over fresh ice in a rock glass. Garnish with a lemon twist. It's got a great pale blue colour, really clean tasting and refreshingly stiff. It will definitely take the edge off a hard day and give you a quick glow. Be Careful!! One is alright, two is too many, three is not enough... That last line was a quote by James Thurber (1894 - 1961) author, cartoonist & humorist. 😁

I have an alternate history that makes sense. When I was younger and the world was different we used to occasionally stalk red deer on the Highland estate that belonged to a friend of my late father. On these stalks that could last "can see to can't see" the Ghillie used to carry two large flasks along with his own rifle, spare telescope etc. The flasks contained a single malt (his choice was Caol ila, my late father's was old style Tamdhu my choice was moot as I was legally too young to drink at that stage but it varied as I aged) in one and what he referred to as "half and half" in the other. The half and half was half Lagavulin and half Drambuie. He claimed the half and half was for American and some English clients who bought a day or week's stalking as they could not handle a heavily peated scotch (see my late father's dram of choice- distinctly unpeated), but he claimed a peated dram was needed in case of bad weather. He claimed his father and other ghillies of that generation did the same, so this would put it into the 20s and before the B.I.F. I picked up a taste for it (we won't mention my age) after the gralloch on my first successful stalk and still make mine half and half (Talisker in autumn and Ardbeg in winter).

@BarTalkCocktails
@BarTalkCocktails 5 лет назад
Drambuie and pineapple juice might be somewhat sweet but, you could always add a base spirit to balance it out. Here in Canada, where I live, a 750ml bottle of Drambuie is $48.20. The closest substitute might be Glayva. It also tastes great and costs $39.95. Cheers!

Is there a cocktail made with amaretto , Drambuie and Scotch together ?
@BarTalkCocktails
@BarTalkCocktails 2 года назад
A Coffin Nail, (not to be confused with a Nail in the Coffin cocktail) is 1.5-2oz(45-60ml) Scotch, .5oz(15ml) Drambuie, .5oz(15ml) Amaretto. Cheers!

I know that generally it's considered that a cocktail is Strong, Bitter/Sour, and Sweet. So, such as the Rusty Nail and B and B (as opposed to B&B) still earn the category because the sweet is pre-mixed with the bitter? Same for the Old Fashioned? And what would it be w/o the bitters (and bit of citrus), then?
@its1110
@its1110 4 года назад
Wouldn't Drambuie and B&B actually be cocktails already, right from the bottle, as they're 80 proof?, as opposed to liqueurs that come in around 40 proof. Shake with ice... instant cocktail. What else... other high-proof liquers -- B&B Drambuie Southern Comfort (Which I occasionally give a new chance, but just can not seem to like.) I've seen a couple of high-proof Curacaos... but find them generally too sweet to make a really palatable drink.

Good question Agent 1110. You asked, "What would it be w/o the bitters (and bit of citrus) then?" I think it would still be classified as a cocktail but, it might not be as balanced as it could be. I believe one should aim for the four elements that make up a cocktail - a balanced mixture of spirit, sugar, water and bitters. It's all about the palate. That said, I have made many a cocktail in my lifetime that didn't have all of the four elements. Some worked out just fine. Others, not so much. What it comes down to is your palate. I have served hundreds of thousands of people in my lifetime and everyone's palate is different.

The alcoholic strength of a cocktail doesn't really matter when it comes down to cocktails. It's all about the mixture and balance of ingredients that make up that cocktail. I'm sorry about your distaste towards Southern Comfort. Here's a fun fact... It was Janis Joplin's favourite drink? Just a little trivia there for ya. And, a side note here, I love her classic song "Piece Of My Heart" Cheers!

First thing, am I still in the KW area? Who Knows? Second thing, look deeper. Here's another hint. I was so privileged to have seen Frank live. It was way back when Tom Waits was just starting out. He was the solo warm-up act to Frank's show. I remember everyone in the audience was booing Tom and there I was yelling at the audience because this guy was spilling his guts out and I just had to hear what he had to say. Don't you love playing Cat & Mouse Riddles? Ha!

"use a single malt for a smokier drink"..eeh not all single malts are smoky?
@BarTalkCocktails
@BarTalkCocktails 2 года назад
You're absolutely correct, not all single malts are smoky. If aged in sherry or wine casks they will usually impart no smokiness. On the other hand, if matured in bourbon barrels, there will be some level of char inside. The latter was what I was referring to when I said to use a single malt for a smokier drink. I probably should have been clearer. Also, let's not forget about the peat. If peat is used to dry grains as it is in some distilleries, it will pass on that smokiness, but that's not a universal practice either. Some modern methods involve no peat whatsoever, like Tomatin 12-Year-Old. It's a classic Highland single malt that's citrusy, floral, and grassy, made without peated malt and finished in sherry casks. If you haven't tried it, give it a go. It's superb. Cheers!
@bloodhoug82
@bloodhoug82 2 года назад
@@BarTalkCocktails Sorry but you are incorrect. Only very few whiskies are aged in sherry casks. The vast majority of scotish whiskies is aged in ex-Burbon barrels and then sometimes only finished in sherry casks. That's a big difference. All those burbon cask aged whiskies are NOT smokey, cause there is no peat in burbon, but honey sweetness. Sometimes (rarely) distilleries burn the barrels extra hot to create more char inside the barrel, which might result in a hint of smokeyness (Tomatin is one of those rare examples). But yes, using peat is the way to create a smokey whisky.
