This is how I made a sandbox for my mom('s grandkids). Free plans - Makify.com/plans/Sandbox_Plans... Makify2 - / @makify2 Patreon - / makify Twitter - / makify1 Etsy Shop - Makify.etsy.com Website - Makify.com
Hi! Great video. I have a question. I would like for the lid to be attached. Would it be durable to do it with inside or outside latches? Do I need to change the lid's measurements? What would you recommend? Thank you!
The information about what wood you need is in the free plans I made (makify.com/plans/Sandbox_Plans.pdf). I think I used about 128 screws in total. I used Titebond II wood glue (amzn.to/2Jt1w8R), Good luck with your built. I hope your kids like it!
I wish I could remember exactly what screws I used. I think they were just basic deck screws from Lowes. Yes, I used 2x8 boards for the frame. I'll check the plans and correct them. Thanks for the heads up!
I would expect the sandbox to fill up with rain water since the cover isn’t leak-proof, then the water to become stagnant since it has no way of escaping since it’s lined with plastic. Could be remedied with non-permeable cover.
Thanks for the video, I don’t have kids but I have three dogs and one likes to dig. He’s been tearing up my yard and refilling them has become too much of a hassle, so I was thinking of building him a sandbox. And this has given me a few Ideas
I think its a compact Rockwell circular saw...could be wrong on the brand though... www.amazon.com/Rockwell-RK3441K-Compact-Circular-Saw/dp/B00GTEU0M4/ref=sr_1_1?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1470672163&sr=1-1&keywords=mini+circular+saw
I considered hinges but then the sandbox would take up twice the ground area and make it hard to play around the entire perimeter of the box. Some people might like to hinge their lids but I felt they would be too restrictive for my taste. The weed barrier is permeable to water but not sand so rain can easily pass through the sandbox without washing away the sand.
Without the dowels, I would have been driving screws into end grain on those boards and end grain tends not to hold screws very well over time. The dowels provide something better for the screws to hold onto.
Was all of your lumber pressure-treated? The slats didn't look like it. Thought it was peculiar also that you used dowels to screw into yet wonder if those would be the first place to rot. I guess 4-5 years would be the expected life span which is adequate for the two unless you plan on giving mom another grandchild...hint hint "A" for design and the build video.
The slats definitely aren't pressure treated but it was all they had. I didn't have much time to complete the build and was limited to what I could get quickly. Definitely something to think about though.
We built this in June exactly to the plan and within a month had mold growing on the landscape cloth and on the inside and top of the cover. Bleached it once and it still came back immediately. Very disappointed for all that work!
