I’ve taught children to sew, both hand sewing and machine sewing. A machine with a 50% speed function is really helpful for children learning to use a sewing machine, as it reduces anxiety that the machine will get away This is FANTASTIC. I’m so impressed with this project. It’s PERFECT to teach children to sew straight lines without having to juggle two bits of floppy fabric to sew straight seams. I’m convinced it’s a great first machine sewn quilt for kids to make. There’s lots of low stress learning fun to this project: it encourages creativity and supports decision making in choosing fabric and colour arrangement. It’s an activity that further facilitates fine motor skill development. Kids too young to use a rotary cutter can trim with scissors because there’s a cut guide. I think it’s a good project to introduce kids to safely using a hot iron (I would have them press each wedge at the end, rather than press each strip). This project will support children piecing units because the extra density means the fabric being seamed isn’t so floppy and unmanageable. At the end the child has a quilt that they have made themselves or that they have largely contributed to It would be a fun cooperative project for siblings by dividing the steps according to age and skill ability, and importantly in terms of learning, their capacity. Finally, as it’s made from scrap waste there is less stress about ruining good fabric I love it. Thank you.

Fun technique! I think the selvedge wedges would be much thicker and stiffer due to the interfacing and overlapping. The solid wedges are much thinner and the bias edges would get wonky because they aren't stabilized?
@ShabbyFabrics

I thought that would be a problem, but I sprayed all of my background kite fabric with sizing prior to sewing it and I was pleasantly surprised to find that I had no warping on my edges. hope this helps you! -Bethany.
