I am a beginner to intermediate carpenter, and what I always find helpful is explaining the "WHY?" some things are done the way it's do. Such as you said splitting the wood. I've heard some guys teachings that assume the viewers just know, but some of us newbies don't know!! Thank you!

Thank you. We try. One of the reasons we got into writing and then videos about home improvement was how instructions are written. They tell you +what+ to do but hardly ever +how+ to do it.

I've made a ton of this type of simple, reliable, low-cost brackets, but it never dawned on me to make a right and left pair for an easy, no-notch method of mounting two shelves on a single pair of brackets. So simple but so genius, seriously a game changer! Thank YOU for sharing!!

I’m glad I found this video on how to make that type of brackets. Your video is by far the best one I’ve found and I’ve seen many at this point. No other video explains in detail like you do. Thank you very much for all the info! Just what I was looking for and then some! 👍🏼👍🏼

I know this is an old video, but still great Idea none the less, was just looking at those metal shelf brackets at Home depot, at 8 bucks a pop, they get expensive, and have no where near the versatility. I love how you used every portion of these brackets, even to the great place to put tape. I'm going to be making a couple sets for sure!

how deep of a shelf do you think you could make that would still be strong enough enough to hold tote boxes full of storage type stuff (clothes, books, kitchenware, etc)

I've made similar shelves and tables 2-feet deep. The key is the connection to the wall and a proportional angle brace. If you're going into studs or concrete and using a horizontal brace (or ledger) like I showed, you'd be in good shape. Hi Mark. I am building shelves against the wall in the garage and was going to use 45 deg cross-bracing. If I go with 30/60, to do a mini-shelf under, how do I figure out the run length of the cross-brace if I want to inset it like you did? Say 4" in from the horiz brace end?

Steve -- I think I understand your question. The lengths of the back (against the wall) and the top sort of determine the run of the angle brace. I went 20-inches against the wall, 14-inches for the top. The angle brace that worked there for the lower shelf support was 17-inches long-to-long. Does this help?

The brace is 17 3/4-inches on mine. I recommend to build and square the bracket, then just trace the angle.

I looked at your video to learn how to make the angles on the bracket but you did not show that, you need to show how to make the angels on the braces.

Not sure I understand. I explain how I came up with the angles starting around 4:40. Let me know if I'm jut not understanding the question properly.
